Even though Phuti Mohafe is still grieving the loss of Oswin Appollis to Orlando Pirates, the Polokwane City coach believes his former talisman is in a better place.
Appollis had been one of the most sought-after players in the Betway Premiership in recent seasons, attracting interest from local and overseas-based clubs alike following his exploits for City. Pirates eventually won the race for his signature, securing the Cape Town-born attacker during the current transfer window.
Following a two-week pre-season tour in Marbella with his new teammates and coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, Appollis finally made his debut on Saturday — fittingly, against City. The 23-year-old didn't only show glimpses of his old form but improvement as well, scoring the opener in Pirates' 2-0 win and claiming the Player of the Match award.

Mohafe admitted that Appollis' departure had left a massive void in his squad, but said he wished the player nothing but success.
'It is always difficult to lose a family member,' he said. 'And I lost a family [member], so I am still grieving.
'He left and went to a bigger team. All I can do is wish him well. I am feeling that pinch, and he left a big hole in my team. It'll take some time for us to replace him.'
Mohafe's pain was understandable, given that Appollis showed his class with a composed finish in the 12th minute. After Boitumelo Radiopane held up play, he laid the ball off to an unmarked Appollis, who dropped his shoulder, picked his spot and curled a low shot into the far post.
Mohafe was proud to see a move he had worked on in training come to life — albeit against his own side — and credited Ouaddou for helping refine the player further.
'It shows that I taught him well,' Mohafe said. 'He took that to Pirates, and the coach who is coaching him now has sharpened him.
'That movement is something we worked on repeatedly. We knew that once he got the ball, we couldn't allow him space inside.
'Unfortunately, the guy who was supposed to close that gap went to slumberland a little bit, and he caught us.
'I think the Appollis we saw today is a new version — in terms of movement and playing ability. He's improving, and I hope he continues to do so.'
Still, Mohafe knows he has little time to sulk. With the new season under way, he must quickly find a replacement for his departed star. While he bemoaned the number of current injuries in the squad, including right-back Thabang Matuludi, he expressed confidence in striker Levy Mashiane.
'We have players who are playing in that [Appollis' former] position, so the only thing we need to do is make them understand how we want them to play,' he said.
'Mashiane has played most of his career as a winger. I found it challenging to use him as a striker — but because of the quality he has, I think it's working.
'He's got a very good first touch and vision to pick out the player next to him. So, with him playing as a different kind of No 9, he can give us good movement.'

Ouaddou calls for quick recovery after Orlando Pirates' defeat in their Betway Premiership opener

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is determined to see his side respond positively when they face Marumo Gallants on Tuesday. Photo: Itumeleng English Independent Media Image: Itumeleng English Independent Media Orlando Pirates' coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has stressed that it will be crucial for the team to bounce back from their defeat in the first game of the Betway Premiership season. Sekhukhune United handed Pirates a sour start to the league, beating them 1-0 away at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Siphesihle Mkhize scored Sekhukhune's solitary goal early in the second half, burying home a rebound following a scramble inside Pirates' box. That win ensured that Babina Noko showed early signs of living up to their 'dark horses' tag this season, while the loss put Pirates' plans into jeopardy from the outset. Pirates are expected to challenge for — and win — the Premiership this season, as the club have invested heavily in preparations and squad strengthening. Video Player is loading. 'The chance that we have in football is to play again quickly and aim for victory in the next game,' Ouaddou stated during his post-match press conference in Orlando. 'The league is a marathon; many games remain to be played. We started badly, but we'll get some rest and quickly get back to business.' Pirates' loss to Babina Noko saw them fail to capitalise on Mamelodi Sundowns' slip earlier in the day, as the defending champions drew 1-1 with Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Ouaddou took a different perspective on the defeat, crediting the league for becoming increasingly competitive. Pirates Defeated in League Season Opener ⚫⚪🔴⭐#OrlandoPirates#OnceAlways — Orlando Pirates (@orlandopirates) August 9, 2025 'This result means that every season the league is getting better and tougher,' he reasoned. 'The teams are preparing and organising themselves well. My analysis of the result is that there are no more small teams in the league.' Pirates looked well-prepared and ready to compete across competitions when they brushed aside Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarter-final at Orlando a fortnight ago. The new signings — including Sipho Mbule, Sihle Nduli, and Oswin Appollis — hardly looked out of place in that game, driving Pirates en route to the semi-final. Ouaddou still believes in the players at his disposal and in the team's set-up, but acknowledges there is ample room for improvement going forward. Bradley Grobler drives Sekhukhune United forward against Orlando Pirates on Saturday night. Photo: Itumeleng English Independent Media Image: Itumeleng English Independent Media 'It doesn't give me a different picture of my team or my boys. We have quality, but there's a lot of work to do, especially when you have many new players,' said Ouaddou. 'Of course, there's still a lot of work to be done. I still believe in the players we have — there's quality within the team. It's only the beginning of the season, so we'll regroup and bounce back.' Ouaddou added that they must quickly get their league campaign up and running, especially with the quick turnaround of matches in the coming weeks. 'It's part of football. We knew that we might have some close games in the schedule from the start of the season,' he explained. 'We need to assess player availability. We have many players, so rotation will be important when you have that many games in a short space of time.' Pirates' next match will be away to Marumo Gallants at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday night (7.30pm kick-off). The clash will mark a homecoming for Ouaddou, who began his PSL coaching career at Gallants last season. The 46-year-old is not making the game about himself, but rather about the team's need to secure three points against a side that won their opening fixture of the season. 'I have seen their result, so congratulations to them. But it's not only important for me — it's important for our team to go there and get the result,' Ouaddou said. 'When you lose the first game at home, you definitely need to get points away to stay in the title race.'

Makhoye praises Saleng's impact on Orbit College's Betway Premiership debut

Monnapule Saleng's homecoming could be the catalyst for Orbit College's fight to establish themselves in the Betway Premiership. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Orbit College head coach Pogiso Makhoye believes Monnapule Saleng's return has injected a new level of maturity and influence into the Mswenko Boys, after they begun life in the Betway Premiership. The Mpumalanga-based side made their top-flight debut on Saturday, falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat against AmaZulu at the Princess Magogo Stadium. While the result was not what Makhoye's men had hoped for, the performance offered glimpses of their potential — particularly the impact of their returning star. Saleng, on loan from Orlando Pirates, played the full 90 minutes in KwaMashu and impressed despite Orbit struggling to break down a well-drilled Usuthu defence. The 27-year-old's pace, direct running, and ability to draw multiple defenders created the visitors' best attacking moments. For Makhoye, seeing Saleng back in Orbit colours brought more than just nostalgia. Next Stay Close ✕ 'I think with today's performance, you can see that he has matured — he's no longer the young boy who left us,' Makhoye said after the match. 'Now everyone looks up to him and his impact on everyone is huge, especially on the field. He draws two or three players to himself every time, and that creates space for others.' Saleng's journey has come full circle. Before making his professional breakthrough with Free State Stars and later becoming a regular for Orlando Pirates, he was part of Orbit's early development years, helping shape the distinctive style of play that has become their hallmark. Seven years on, his return to his home province comes at a critical time for the newly-promoted side. Makhoye sees his experience as vital in helping Orbit adapt quickly to the demands of the top tier. Management failed to handle Saleng' situation in a professional and humane manner, and this resulted in us losing the league. A player who possesses quality like Saleng, should not be playing for Orbit College. — uMthandazo Wabolova 🪔 (@Abantu_sa) August 6, 2025

Mamelodi Sundowns may have scored an own goal with sale of kingpin Ribeiro

Lucas Ribeiro's sudden exit from Mamelodi Sundowns could reshape the club's season and jeopardise their dominance on all fronts. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Mamelodi Sundowns find themselves at a crossroads, navigating a perplexing situation that has left fans and pundits alike scratching their heads in disbelief. The pending departure of Lucas Ribeiro, the club's standout player and arguably the finest in the PSL, has sparked a torrent of speculation. His destination is unknown, but it is widely believed he is headed to Qatar SC – Percy Tau's former club – in Doha. Without Ribeiro's dynamic presence on the pitch, the club may struggle to maintain the dominance required to secure every domestic trophy on offer. Saturday's unexpected 1-1 draw against lowly Chippa United raises legitimate questions about their title aspirations without the creative spark Ribeiro consistently brought to the game. Sundowns have not revealed why Ribeiro left the training camp in Rustenburg two weeks ago, or why he was absent from the matchday squads for the MTN8 and Betway Premiership matches. Fans may suspect his absence is linked to a pending transfer, but the reason remains shrouded in mystery, as the club has not released a formal statement. It is well known that Sundowns are working diligently to construct a squad capable of winning the prestigious CAF Champions League title, and losing their best asset raises numerous questions. Transfers often follow a predictable pattern: players seeking better financial prospects or increased game time agitate for moves, while clubs sometimes sell top talent to stabilise finances or make way for new signings. However, Sundowns' financial standing appears robust, bolstered by an impressive windfall exceeding R200 million from their Club World Cup appearance. Given this strong footing, one cannot help but wonder why they have chosen to part with Ribeiro instead of improving his salary to retain such an irreplaceable player. Reports have emerged of discontent within the Sundowns camp, with players such as Peter Shalulile and Khuliso Mudau reportedly seeking better contract opportunities elsewhere. While the club has entertained offers for these players, they have rejected bids unless the financial terms were significantly improved. This suggests the club is not in urgent need of funds but may be transitioning its strategy in the wake of Ribeiro's unsettling exit. Speaking on the matter, Sundowns legend Teko Modise did not hold back:
