Ericsson Reports 5G and FWA Growth in Gulf Region
Home » Smart Sectors » Telecom » Ericsson Reports 5G and FWA Growth in Gulf Region
Ericsson has revealed new insights into 5G and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) trends in the June 2025 edition of its Mobility Report. The company highlighted strong momentum in 5G adoption and FWA deployment across the Gulf region and globally.
According to the report, global 5G subscriptions are expected to exceed 2.9 billion by the end of 2025. By 2030, 5G networks are projected to handle 80 percent of global mobile traffic.
In the Gulf, 5G is forecast to represent 90 percent of all mobile subscriptions by 2030, reaching 86 million.
Ericsson noted that demand for high-speed broadband alternatives and national smart city goals are driving strong FWA adoption. FWA is set to make up over 35 percent of new fixed broadband connections, growing to 350 million by the end of 2030.
The report emphasized the role of 5G FWA in expanding broadband coverage in areas where wired infrastructure is not feasible.
Ericsson also reported that 5G networks handled 35 percent of global mobile traffic by the end of 2024. This figure is expected to increase to more than 80 percent by 2030.
In the Gulf, service providers are evolving from traditional telcos to digital service providers. This shift is being powered by technologies such as artificial intelligence, edge computing, cloud, and 5G.
From 2024 to 2030, mobile subscriptions in GCC countries are projected to grow at an annual rate of 3 percent, reaching 95 million. By 2030, 5G will account for 90% of mobile subscriptions in the Gulf.
FWA is helping close connectivity gaps and support smart city goals.
Ericsson reported that CSPs are also exploring monetization opportunities through 5G Standalone (5G SA) and 5G Advanced. These enable new services based on quality and performance instead of just data volume.
The report includes use cases for sectors such as gaming, live events, point-of-sale, VPNs, and media production.
It also features a study on how Generative AI may impact mobile network traffic and a collaborative article with Sony. The article highlights how dynamic slicing and QoD APIs can enhance live media production over 5G.
Petra Schirren, President of Ericsson Gulf at Ericsson Europe, Middle East and Africa, said the region is characterized by high 5G penetration and digital ambition. She noted that Gulf service providers are delivering customized experiences powered by advanced technologies like AI and FWA.

Huawei Reveals Telecom Growth Strategy at MWC Shanghai
Home » Smart Sectors » Telecom » Huawei Reveals Telecom Growth Strategy at MWC Shanghai During MWC Shanghai 2025, Huawei revealed four strategic pathways to support telecom growth amid increasing market maturity and stagnating revenue. Eric Xu, Huawei's Deputy Chairman and Rotating Chairman, addressed industry leaders in a keynote speech. He acknowledged that while telecom has grown rapidly for decades, the sector now faces slower development as basic consumer needs are largely met in major markets. Xu outlined four approaches to drive sustainable growth. • He highlighted high-value user segments, such as food delivery riders and livestreamers. For example, delivery riders grew from 30 million in 2020 to 70 million in 2024, with projections reaching 160 million by 2030. These users consume more data and minutes, with ARPU 1.6 times higher than average. • Xu reported that livestreaming professionals now number around 50 million, up from 10 million in 2022, and may reach 130 million by 2030. These users consume five times more data and produce four times more ARPU than average. Next, Xu addressed video consumption. He noted that although video accounts for 50% of mobile traffic, high-definition video usage remains low. In top-tier Chinese cities, only 22% of mobile video traffic is 1080p or higher. He called for ecosystem collaboration with content providers, device makers, and equipment vendors to overcome pricing and technical barriers. Xu also discussed 5G-connected vehicles. He noted that only 30% of new cars sold in China by 2025 are expected to support 5G. He urged industry players to work together to reduce costs, especially those related to IP rights and T-Box components. He proposed a dual-connectivity model B2C for cockpit functions and B2B for T-Box systems. He emphasized that autonomous vehicles must operate independently without network reliance. Lastly, Xu revealed potential in expanding Fiber to the Room (FTTR) to small and micro businesses. He said over 500 million such businesses worldwide face challenges like poor Wi-Fi and limited connectivity. FTTR, already used by 75 million in China, could meet these needs. In contrast, only 500,000 FTTR users exist globally outside China. Xu concluded by emphasizing tailored strategies: each carrier must identify its own path based on unique market and competitive conditions. He stated that Huawei is ready to support carriers in building long-term, sustainable growth strategies.

Huawei Highlights 5G-A and AI Synergy at MWC Shanghai
Home » Top stories » Huawei Highlights 5G-A and AI Synergy at MWC Shanghai Huawei announced key advancements in 5G-Advanced (5G-A) and AI integration at the Mobile Broadband Forum (MBBF) Top Talk Summit, held during MWC Shanghai 2025. Over 150 guests, including telecom executives, AI innovators, and academic leaders, attended the event to explore the convergence of ICT and AI technologies. David Wang, Huawei's Executive Director of the Board, opened the summit by emphasizing the transformative role of mobile AI. He noted three major shifts: Mobile devices are evolving beyond apps with AI agents. AI-IoT convergence is creating a new portal to the intelligent world. AI is optimizing networks across spectrum, energy, and O&M efficiency. Wang urged the industry to collaborate and unlock the full potential of 5G-A. He revealed that Huawei and partners are focusing on five key areas to drive growth: large uplink bandwidth, robust device ecosystems, multimodal services, all-scenario IoT, and diverse business models. The event highlighted how 5G-A is reshaping industries. In manufacturing, 5G-A enables real-time embodied AI for sensing and decision-making. In logistics, AI-assisted route planning and wide 5G-A coverage are improving delivery efficiency and reducing costs. Technologically, 5G-A must evolve from a basic connectivity tool to an experience platform. It needs to support real-time interactions among billions of mobile AI agents. Huawei reported that premium user experiences are driving 5G-A monetization. Applications like cloud gaming and immersive sports streaming benefit from low latency and high bandwidth, encouraging consumers to pay for guaranteed service quality. Li Peng, Huawei's Senior Vice President and President of ICT Sales & Service, concluded the summit by stating that 5G-A will bring stronger capabilities. It will help carriers monetize not just traffic, but also user experience. He explained that AI agents are being used to deliver targeted services across user segments. These include individuals, homes, industries, and mobile users. To achieve this, Huawei called for new AI-centric network standards. These would enable lossless 5G-A networks that support elastic scheduling and reliable, on-demand cloud-edge-device connections. MWC Shanghai 2025 was held from June 18 to June 20 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. Huawei showcased its latest solutions in Hall N1. The company reported that the commercial adoption of 5G-A is accelerating in 2025. It continues to work with global carriers and experts to use AI innovations for transforming telecom services, infrastructure, and business models.
