A woman who once weighed over 280 pounds gorging on a diet of potato chips and "cheesy" pasta has shed more than half that size.
Lisa Bernett, a 44-year-old from Boreham Wood, Hertfordshire, said she used to down bags of Doritos, as well as takeout and other unhealthy options. Since committing to making a change almost two years ago, she is down to 140 pounds from 285 and has dropped from a size 24 dress to size 8.
Bernett told SWNS she cut the weight naturally, opting not to use fad diets or weight-loss drugs like Mounjaro or Ozempic.
"I would never use the jabs as I do not believe it teaches you about fat loss or educating yourself about food," Bernett said.
"It's a good tool to have but if you have no other tools then how will you keep it off? There's no way I would want to stay on injections for the rest of my life in the fear that if I stop I'll gain. I also didn't feel comfortable going down the surgery route."
Out with the old, in with the new
If Bernett wasn't going to go with a quick fix, she had to make some substantial changes.
First up was her diet, which was admittedly a mess.
"My diet was poor. I wouldn't ever eat breakfast," Bernett explained. "Lunchtime I'd either eat loads of pasts with cheese, or I'd have lots of bagels with cheese. For a snack I'd have a whole bag of crisps with a dip - I didn't realize a whole bag of and a dip was probably my whole daily allowance for food.
"I'd have a takeaway twice a week and big portions of home cooked meals. I always had to finish my plates. Now, I use a calorie app."
Now, Bernett says she eschews her former go-to snacks and meals for healthier options like baked potato with grilled chicken and salad, with the goal of hitting specific counts for protein, fiber and calories.
You've got to move it
Before radically altering her lifestyle, Bernett admitted she lived a very sedentary existence.
"My lifestyle before was pretty bad – I didn't move," she said. 'I'd take the kids to school, go to work and then come home and sit on my backside. Walking, going up the stairs, it was hard.
"My knees hurt and I got out of breath really quickly. Thankfully, I never had any health issues, but I got chest infections quite a lot."
Bernett started off walking 10,000 steps a day and has since boosted that number to 20,000. She also mixes in regular gym, boxing and Muay Thai sessions.
Her advice for others
To anyone else looking to make a change in their diet and lifestyle, Bernett recommends they "take accountability."
'Not everyone's perfect. Even on the days you find hard, and you want to reach out for something bad, do it, but weigh it and take accountability, then rein it back in the following day," she said.

Sharon Smith, from Liverpool, went to a local emergency room after she began to experience "an agonizing pain in her chest" in April 2023, according to a news release shared by the city's Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, which is where she was initially treated. Following blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy, the mother of two was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). "It came as a complete shock," Smith said, per the news release. Acute lymphocytic leukemia — also known as acute lymphoblastic leukemia — "is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made," according to the Mayo Clinic. "The word 'acute' in acute lymphocytic leukemia comes from the fact that the disease progresses rapidly and creates immature blood cells, rather than mature ones," the organization states. Smith — who lives with her husband, Paul, and has two sons and a grandson — said she had "no symptoms at all" before the shocking cancer diagnosis. "We'd just come back from [vacation] where I'd walked the length of Spain and I'd been playing football in the garden with my little grandson the night before I got this pain," she recalled, per the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre's news release. Smith was sent to the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre for chemotherapy following the diagnosis. In November 2023, she then underwent a "stem cell transplant from a donor to help her create healthy new blood cells and reduce the risk of the cancer returning," according to the news release. 'I felt really good after the stem cell transplant,' Smith said. 'I've always been on the go, really active and busy, and I felt like my usual self again." 'I was still coming for regular check-ups at Clatterbridge and, in September 2024, my routine bone marrow biopsy showed I had relapsed and the cancer was back. I just wasn't expecting it so, as you can imagine, I was completely shocked," she continued. 'That was a Tuesday and I went home thinking this was the end for me, then on the Friday I got a lovely phone call from the consultant, Dr. Saif, to say he'd been working behind the scenes to try and find another treatment for me and I'd been accepted for CAR-T therapy," she added, referencing the chimeric antigen receptor T cell therapy, which is a highly innovative form of immunotherapy, per the hospital. According to the American Cancer Society, CAR-T therapy "is a way to get immune cells called T cells (a type of white blood cell) to fight cancer by changing them in the lab so they can find and destroy cancer cells." "This type of treatment can be very helpful in treating some types of cancer, even when other treatments are no longer working," according to the society. Speaking about being accepted for the treatment, Smith said, 'I went from literally the worst time in life to feeling like I'd just won the lottery because there was a little bit of hope there," per the news release. Due to CAR-T therapy not being available in Liverpool until the end of 2024, Smith was referred to The Christie in Manchester for her to receive treatment as soon as possible. She said the approximately 34-mile journey to Manchester was "exhausting," adding, "We were over and back about 20 times in all for consultations, cell collection, chemotherapy, infusion and follow-up appointments afterwards." She then had to undergo chemotherapy in Manchester to prepare her body before the treatment began. Despite some side effects, the treatment was successful and Smith "recovered quickly," according to the hospital's news release. A 60-year-old man gave himself an uncommon psychiatric disorder after asking ChatGPT for diet advice in a case published Tuesday by the American College of Physicians Journals. The man, who remained anonymous in the case study, told doctors he had eliminated sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt, from his diet after reading about its negative health effects. He said he could only find sources telling him how to reduce salt, but not eliminate it completely. Inspired by his nutrition studies in college, the man decided to completely eliminate sodium chloride from his diet as a personal experiment, with consultation from Chat GPT, researchers wrote. He maintained multiple dietary restrictions and even distilled his own water at home. 'For 3 months, he had replaced sodium chloride with sodium bromide obtained from the internet after consultation with ChatGPT, in which he had read that chloride can be swapped with bromide, though likely for other purposes, such as cleaning,' the case study read. While excess sodium can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of health issues, it is still necessary to consume a healthy amount of it. The man, who had no psychiatric history, eventually ended up at the hospital, worried that his neighbor was poisoning him. He told doctors he was very thirsty, but paranoid about the water he was offered. 'In the first 24 hours of admission, he expressed increasing paranoia and auditory and visual hallucinations, which, after attempting to escape, resulted in an involuntary psychiatric hold for grave disability,' the study read. Doctors concluded that the man was suffering from bromism, or bromide toxicity, a condition that is rare today but was more common in the early 20th century. The research noted that bromide was found in several over-the-counter medicines back then and contributed to up to 8% of bromism-related psychiatric admissions at that time. The hospital treated the man for psychosis and discharged him weeks later. His case highlights the potential pitfalls of using AI to seek medical tips. Dr. Margaret Lozovatsky, a pediatrician, warned last year that AI often misses crucial context. 'Even if the source is appropriate, when some of these tools are trying to combine everything into a summary, it's often missing context clues, meaning it might forget a negative,' she told the American Medical Association.
