CBSE to release ‘Bharatiya Ganit Parampara' monograph highlighting India's mathematical heritage for students

Bharatiya Ganit Parampara
that will document India's rich contributions to the field of mathematics. This initiative, recently approved by the CBSE governing body, reflects a broader emphasis on integrating India's knowledge traditions into the school curriculum in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Comprehensive coverage of India's mathematical legacy
Envisioned to be between 150 and 175 pages, the authoritative monograph will cover key mathematical discoveries and innovations spanning ancient, medieval, and modern India. It aims to serve as a culturally rooted and globally relevant resource for students, teachers, and schools nationwide, available both in digital and print formats.
Scholarly development and authenticity
A senior CBSE official told the PTI that the monograph will be developed through an academic partner or agency selected via an open process. The document will highlight important schools of thought, prominent mathematicians, and foundational texts such as the
Sulba Sutras
,
Aryabhatiya
,
Brahmasphutasiddhanta
, and
Lilavati
.
It will also feature the significant contributions of the Kerala School of Mathematics, which is known for its pioneering work in calculus well before its formal development in Europe.
Practical applications and learner engagement
In addition to historical content, the monograph will explore practical applications of Indian mathematics in areas such as astronomy, architecture, commerce, and education. To ensure authenticity and scholarly rigor, it will include translated original Sanskrit shlokas accompanied by relevant source references.

Ahmedabad spacetech firm joins consortium for indigenous satellites
1 2 Ahmedabad: India's first fully indigenous commercial earth observation (EO) satellite constellation is taking shape, and Ahmedabad is playing a starring role. PierSight Space, a spacetech firm from the city, has joined a four-member private consortium selected by Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), under the department of space, to build and operate the network. The Rs 1,200 crore project, under a pioneering public-private partnership (EO-PPP) model, will deploy 12 satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for round-the-clock imaging in all weather. The consortium is led by PixxelSpace India and also includes Satsure Analytics India and Dhruva Space. Officials of IN-SPACe, headquartered in Ahmedabad, said that for the first time in India's space history, a private grouping will fund, design, build, and operate such a system, with the constellation expected to be launched over the next five years. The resulting EO data will serve critical sectors including climate change monitoring, disaster management, agriculture, infrastructure, marine surveillance, national security, and urban planning, said experts. Baleen whale strandings increase tenfold along southwest coast
Kochi: There is a tenfold increase in the stranding of baleen whales in the last decade along the southwest coast of India, triggering an urgent need for region-specific conservation strategies in the face of climate change. According to a study conducted by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute of India (CMFRI), the stranding from 2004 to 2023 was examined, and it was found that two whale subspecies, B. brydei and B. edeni, saw a spike from 0.3% per year during 2003-2013 to 3% per year during 2014-2023. The latest primary survey conducted in 2023 alone registered nine whale strandings, the highest in recent years, mainly reported between Aug and Nov. Karnataka recorded the highest stranding rates, followed by Kerala and northern Maharashtra, making them the hotspots of the stranding events. Southern Maharashtra and Goa showed few to no stranding events, said the study published in 'Regional Studies in Marine Science'. "During the southwest monsoon season, the ocean currents are also high, the sea is turbulent and often they get hit by ships or injured. It called for providing training for fishers and officials and improving citizen science platforms for data collection, which are also critical. High vessel traffic, fishing activity, environmental factors and shallow coastal shelves were identified as contributing factors. Increased social media attention and citizen reporting also increased the reporting of stranding events. Another notable finding was the increased incidences of strandings during the monsoon season. Scientists said that this could also be related to the chlorophyll concentrations, which meant the presence of food for these big mammals. The study found that chlorophyll-a concentration, a marker of ocean productivity during the southwest monsoon, had a positive correlation to whale stranding. This suggests that whales are drawn closer to coastal feeding grounds during the monsoon when nutrient upwelling increases plankton and fish abundance.
