Cooper Flagg is paying homage with Mavericks jersey number selection
After joining the Dallas Mavericks on June 25, No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg opted to return to his original jersey number worn up until last season at Duke. Flagg wore No. 32 at Nokomis Regional High School in Maine and the Montverde Academy in Central Florida. He was forced to change it to No. 2 when he began his freshman campaign in Durham, since it is retired to honor two-time NCAA champion Christian Laettner. The 18-year-old chose to don No. 2 with the Blue Devils to honor a friend who died from brain cancer in November 2022 at 19 years old. He made the switch back to No. 32 because his mother, Kelly, wore it while playing in high school. "My mom wore 32 when she was in high school, and that was always her number," Flagg said in a video posted by the Mavericks on X. "She had teammates in college that wore it, so she didn't wear it in college. She wore it in high school, so that's really why." Flagg was the AP national college player of the year after leading Duke to the Final Four, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks on 38.5% shooting from 3-point range. He became the 22nd player in program history to be a consensus first-team All-American. The 6-foot-8 Maine native debuted with the Mavericks in the NBA Summer League, averaging 20.5 points, five rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals on 35.7% shooting from the field. He produced 31 points in his second and final appearance on July 12. Flagg paid great homage to his high school friend at Duke with No. 2, and will now be playing in front of his mother, wearing her number again, beginning next season with the Mavericks. Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA.

Mavericks' Klay Thompson leaves NBA fans speechless with insane 3-point shooting
The post Mavericks' Klay Thompson leaves NBA fans speechless with insane 3-point shooting appeared first on ClutchPoints. In a new video on social media, Dallas Mavericks veteran Klay Thompson reminded everyone why he's still one of the game's most lethal three-point shooters. He's fifth on the NBA's all-time list for three-pointers made. There's a reason why LSU women's basketball guard Flau'jae Johnson wants to train with Thompson this summer. His shooting inspired a generation of hoopers. Much like the all-time three-point shooting leader and Thompson's former teammate, Golden State Warriors All-Star Stephen Curry, it's impressive to watch them train in an open gym. In a new video, Thompson couldn't miss, draining dozens of deep corner threes, per NBA skills coach Chris Brickley's X, formerly Twitter. 'I guess this is what being one of the best shooters ever to live looks like,' Brickley said to a video, nearly two minutes long, of Thompson draining threes. The art of Thompson's shooting is a friendly reminder of what NBA players do to train for games and those huge moments when their team needs a three, and the pressure's on. 'Klay Thompson is back to himself,' Hoops' X, formerly Twitter, said in response to the clip. '70 threes in a row,' to which other users pointed to Thompson's new relationship with rapper Megan Thee Stallion. 'Bro bags Meg and all of a sudden starts showing out again. Study the baddie effect,' said. Another user replied, 'Megan really changed this broke dudes life.' For the second consecutive season, Thompson shot below a 40% clip from deep, connecting on 39.1% of his threes in 2024-25. He also averaged 14.0 points on 41.2% shooting from the floor, 3.4 rebounds, and 0.7 steals per game in his first season with the Mavericks. Flau'jae Johnson reveals message from Mavericks' Klay Thompson When LSU women's basketball guard Flau'jae Johnson revealed Mavericks' Klay Thompson's message to her, she couldn't help but show excitement over the idea of working out with one of the greatest NBA three-point shooters. Johnson said Thompson has always impressed her with his approach to the game and can't wait to pick his brain and study his approach. 'I text Klay Thompson because I've always been impressed with his balance and his footwork,' Johnson said. 'I would really to come and just want you work. I was like I wanna watch you work. Klay Thompson hit me, and he was like, 'When I get back to Dallas, we can definitely get some shots up.' So I kind of have been reaching out.' Johnson is entering her senior year while Thompson will be entering his 13th NBA season, and second with the Mavericks. Mavericks star Anthony Davis gets surgery for detached retina
Anthony Davis recently underwent surgery to repair a detached retina in his eye, according to a report from ESPN's Shams Charania. The Mavericks superstar is expected to make a full recovery in time for Dallas' training camp, Charania added. Davis reportedly played through the injury during the regular season and the Mavericks' two-game play-in tournament run. The 10-time All-Star will enter his first full season with the Mavericks in the fall after being traded from the Lakers in the blockbuster Luka Doncic deal. Davis burst onto the scene in Dallas during his first game after the shocking trade, dropping 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks in just 31 minutes before leaving the game with a groin injury, which took him off the court for a month and a half. He had already been sidelined for several games with an abdominal strain before the trade and his debut with the Mavericks. In total, Davis played nine regular-season games and both play-in games for the Mavericks before being eliminated by the Grizzlies. The Mavericks were ravaged by injuries late last season. Star point guard Kyrie Irving tore his ACL in early March and isn't expected to be ready to return until late next season — if at all. Big men Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II also missed big chunks of the season. In Irving's absence, Davis is expected to take on a huge workload on both ends of the floor. He'll have help from the highly anticipated rookie Cooper Flagg, whom the Mavericks drafted after getting fortunate in the draft lottery and landing the No. 1 overall pick.
