Cooper Flagg is paying homage with Mavericks jersey number selection

USA Today13 hours ago
After joining the Dallas Mavericks on June 25, No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg opted to return to his original jersey number worn up until last season at Duke.
Flagg wore No. 32 at Nokomis Regional High School in Maine and the Montverde Academy in Central Florida. He was forced to change it to No. 2 when he began his freshman campaign in Durham, since it is retired to honor two-time NCAA champion Christian Laettner.
The 18-year-old chose to don No. 2 with the Blue Devils to honor a friend who died from brain cancer in November 2022 at 19 years old. He made the switch back to No. 32 because his mother, Kelly, wore it while playing in high school.
"My mom wore 32 when she was in high school, and that was always her number," Flagg said in a video posted by the Mavericks on X. "She had teammates in college that wore it, so she didn't wear it in college. She wore it in high school, so that's really why."
Flagg was the AP national college player of the year after leading Duke to the Final Four, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks on 38.5% shooting from 3-point range. He became the 22nd player in program history to be a consensus first-team All-American.
The 6-foot-8 Maine native debuted with the Mavericks in the NBA Summer League, averaging 20.5 points, five rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals on 35.7% shooting from the field. He produced 31 points in his second and final appearance on July 12.
Flagg paid great homage to his high school friend at Duke with No. 2, and will now be playing in front of his mother, wearing her number again, beginning next season with the Mavericks.

Magic Johnson Reacts To Photo Of Slimmed-Down Luka Doncic

Magic Johnson Reacts To Photo Of Slimmed-Down Luka Doncic originally appeared on The Spun. Among the many reasons that the Dallas Mavericks made the fateful decision to trade megastar Luka Doncic was his seeming inability to lose weight. So when Doncic did a magazine cover shoot looking much slimmer, everyone was stunned - including one Lakers legend. Taking to X earlier this week, Lakers icon Magic Johnson shared the photos of Doncic's incredible shoot with Men's Health and stated how impressed he is by the work Luka has done. He believes it's a sign that Doncic is more determined than ever to win an NBA title. "I love how Luka is showing his Laker teammates how serious he is about winning a championship in Los Angeles by transforming his body!" Magic wrote. NBA fans were far less impressed than Magic was though. Many took to the comments and pointed out that Luka shouldn't be praised for doing something he should have been doing to begin with: "Let's see if he shows them all season long…that's always been the issue with Luka," one user replied. "A pro athlete being in top shape is now praised. Man we fell a lot," another wrote. "The 5-game 1st round PO exit this year gave him an extra 6 weeks to work out. He has had an off season team for 3 years now and the last time he showed up close to this shape he averaged 34-10-9 and went the to Finals," a third wrote. On February 2, the Lakers pulled off one of the biggest blockbuster trades in NBA history, acquiring Doncic from the Mavericks in exchange for Anthony Davis and other compensation. Dallas were quickly raked over the coals for giving up on one of the world's brightest basketball stars in exchange for relatively nothing. Ironically, Dallas didn't even suffer serious consequences from it as they went on to secure the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and secured a potential franchise superstar in Cooper Flagg. As for the Lakers, they won their division and finished third in the Western Conference but wound up losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the NBA Johnson Reacts To Photo Of Slimmed-Down Luka Doncic first appeared on The Spun on Jul 31, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 31, 2025, where it first appeared.

Chicago Cubs make quick work of Baltimore Orioles in a 1-0 win on a busy day at Wrigley Field

An announcement that Wrigley Field will host the 2027 All-Star Game. Tributes to Ryne Sandberg. New players in the Chicago Cubs clubhouse after the trade deadline. Oh, yeah, and a baseball game was played. It was an eventful Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field, and the Cubs pulled off a 1-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in front of a crowd of 40,520 in a swift 1 hour, 49 minutes. Rookie Cade Horton (5-3) threw five shutout innings, allowing just two hits, and catcher Carson Kelly scored on Ian Happ's sacrifice fly to right in the second. The ball didn't appear deep enough for Kelly to score, but he raced home and Tyler O'Neill's throw was off the mark. 'It was second gear for me,' Kelly joked. 'You do anything you can to win a game. For this team and this city, you have to give it everything you've got every single night.' The Cubs (64-45) got four shutout innings from four relievers, including Andrew Kittredge, whom they picked up from the Orioles (50-60) in a trade before Thursday's deadline. Kittredge had his family with him on this trip and they moved from one hotel to another. The next day he was facing his former teammates in the seventh inning. He got his former batterymate Adley Rutschman to fly out to left and struck out O'Neill and Colton Cowser. 'Rutschman caught my last outing, and I felt like he might know what I was throwing,' Kittredge said. 'I'm glad I got through it and we got the win.' Horton hasn't given up a run since July 9. The 23-year-old has allowed no runs on eight hits in 16 innings in his last three starts, two of them wins. 'He's just very clearheaded out there and very focused,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. 'He doesn't let anything distract him from the next pitch. 'That's a very simple approach, but it's an advanced approach to be able to do that. For a young player in a new environment with extra stuff going around, Cade seems to be able to avoid all of that and block it out.' Horton said slowing down the game and focusing on one pitch has been his approach no matter the count or how many men are on base. But he knows he's on a roll. 'It's in the back of my head,' he said. 'But that's not going to help me go out there and pitch better. You still have to go out and do the work and execute pitches.' The crowd was treated to a pregame scoreboard tribute to Sandberg, who died Monday at 65 after a recurrence of cancer. This was the Cubs' first home game since the Hall of Fame second baseman's death. Former teammates Jody Davis, Shawon Dunston and Rick Sutcliffe delivered second base to the field in his honor. 'That was special,' Kelly said. 'I only got to spend a little bit of time with him, but the person he was and the player he was, I'm fortunate I got to meet him.' The ballpark observed 23 seconds of silence in honor of Sandberg's number, and a video of him and his family singing 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' last season was shown during the seventh-inning stretch. The Cubs all will wear No. 23 jerseys with no names on the back for Saturday's 1:20 p.m. game against the Orioles in Sandberg's honor. Thursday's trade deadline brought four players to the Cubs: Kittredge, infielder/outfielder Willi Castro from the Minnesota Twins and pitchers Taylor Rogers from the Pittsburgh Pirates and Michael Soroka from the Washington Nationals. Castro, who has been in the majors since 2019, said he had played in every ballpark except Wrigley Field until last year. Now he will get to know the park well. 'It feels like I'm home,' he said. Before the game, the team optioned right-hander Gavin Hollowell and catcher Moisés Ballesteros to Triple-A Iowa. Soroka, who pitched for the White Sox last year, did not report to the team before Friday's game, but Counsell has him penciled in to start Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. Right-hander Jameson Taillon, who has been on the injured list since July 1 with a right calf strain, is pegged to throw a rehab start Sunday for Iowa. Right-hander Javier Assad, who hasn't pitched for the Cubs this season after suffering a left oblique strain in spring training, will pitch for Iowa again Wednesday. He gave up two runs (one earned) in 3 2/3 innings for Iowa on Wednesday against Indianapolis. Catcher Miguel Amaya, who also has a left oblique strain, was moved to the 60-day IL, but Counsell called that a 'paper move' to allow an extra 40-man roster spot. 'Everything is going well for him so far,' Counsell said of Amaya. 'He will continue in Iowa this week and then we will see where we are at.'

Sixers' VJ Edgecombe pulls up to Tyrese Maxey Foundation golf tournament

Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe was among the players who stopped by to support the Tyrese Maxey Foundation at a celebrity golf tournament on Friday. Edgecombe was spotted at The Union League Golf Club for a round of 18 holes, along with Justin Edwards, Kyle Lowry and Maxey. The tournament was part of the foundation's second annual "Friends & Family Weekend" in Philadelphia. Maxey will also host a basketball camp on Saturday, helping players aged 7-12 improve as overall athletes through game skills, intensive training, on-court instruction and more. Edgecombe was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, averaging 15 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals on 34% shooting from 3-point range at Baylor. He finished in double figures 27 times, including a season-high 30 points on Jan. 22 in a win over Kansas State. The third pick debuted with the Sixers in the NBA Summer League, averaging 21.5 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and 1.5 blocks on 42.5% shooting from the field. He was limited to two appearances due to a left thumb sprain. Edgecombe has had a brief opportunity to ingratiate himself with the team and city since joining the organization. He appears to be building good chemistry with his teammates, which should enable him to have a smooth transition to the NBA next season.
