Ramanathapuram Collector distributes 60 tonnes of Kappaphycus seed to women cultivators
To revive production of red seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii and to support women cultivators who rely on seaweed farming, the initiative to restore the farming activity and production rate, a seed bank for Kappaphycus alvarezii was established by CSIR-CSMCRI-Marine Algal research station, Mandapam camp in 2021 near the Umayalpuram coast, Mandapam.
The initiative, which was undertaken under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Government. of India, funded project in PMMSY scheme, earmarked 300 tonne as the target.
Under the scheme, CSIR-CSMCRI-Marine Algal research station has produced 278 tonnes of fresh quality seed and distributed among the 211 beneficiaries since the initiation of this project, said a press release of CSIR-CSMCRI.
The beneficiaries who were each given one tonne of seed material were identified by the Department of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu.
The new beneficiaries have been selected from Mandapam coast, Sambai, Mangadu in Rameswaram Island, Puthupatinam in North Ramanathapuram, Kumarappavayal, and Muthukuda in Pudukottai district.

Mandya DC reviews progress of fisheries sector
Mandya: With an impressive annual fish production of nearly 30,000 tonnes, Mandya district holds significant potential in the fisheries sector. Deputy commissioner Kumara emphasised the urgent need to establish a well-structured market system to support and encourage fish farmers. He addressed the district-level review meeting of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) for the financial year 2025–26, held at the DC's office and organised by the department of fisheries. Highlighting the district's fishery resources, Kumara noted that Mandya has 865 lakes—including 177 departmental lakes and 688 gram panchayat lakes—as well as 26 river stretches and four reservoirs used for fish cultivation. In the financial year 2024–25 alone, 306 lakes were developed to enhance fish farming. The district is home to 47 fishermen cooperative societies, supporting over 45,000 fishermen. Kumara stressed the importance of equipping these fishermen with advanced training and best practices in fishery techniques to improve productivity and sustainability, he said. Over the past five years, 742 beneficiaries availed support under the PMMSY, with a cumulative financial assistance of Rs 513.3 lakh disbursed. For the year 2024–25 alone, Rs 224.2 lakh was sanctioned. The DC directed officials to ensure effective utilisation of these funds and promote fish farming even in agricultural ponds. Zilla panchayat CEO KR Nandini, who also spoke on the occasion, underlined the need for continuous training for beneficiaries and called for strict monitoring to prevent misuse of the scheme's benefits.

Workshop to boost climate-smart aquaculture ends
Ludhiana: A capacity building training programme on biofloc aquaculture system (BFAS), spanning three days, was organised recently by Gadvasu's College of Fisheries (COF). Its objective was to promote climate smart intensive aquaculture in the northern part of the country. Six of the participants were women. Jatinder Paul Singh Gill, vice-chancellor, Gadvasu, said, "It is vital to adopt sustainable and resource efficient aquaculture production technologies to meet future production targets, addressing emerging challenges like climate change, depleting water resources and food safety. Such indoor, bio-secure and low-volume aquaculture systems offer a way to produce safe food with minimal environmental impact. " Meera D Ansal, dean, COF said a Capacity Building Resource Centre (CBRC) for intensive aquaculture technologies was set up in the university under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), to cater to increasing regional capacity building demand for intensive aquaculture technologies like recirculatory aquaculture system (RAS) and BFAS. As compared to traditional pond aquaculture, the said climate smart, water saving and high yielding aquaculture technologies utilise only 10%-15% of the water/land resources per kg of fish production, she added. Vaneet Inder Kaur coordinated the training programme tailored into technical sessions and practical demonstrations. It was executed by technical coordinators Amit Mandal and SN Datta. With rigorous hands-on training sessions, the trainees were apprised of all technical aspects and best management practices for BFAS by Mandal. Police, Forest officials not allowed to enter RoFR land: Deputy CM
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has said that Police and Forest officials were not allowed to enter the lands falling under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) category. He was chairing a review meeting with officials of both Khammam and Bhadradri Kothagudem at the Integrated District Offices Complex in Palvancha on Sunday. The meeting was attended by Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, and Animal Husbandry Minister and Khammam district in-charge Vakiti Srihari. It reviewed flood preparedness, implementation of welfare schemes and other key policy initiatives, official sources said. Addressing the review meeting, the Deputy CM said that farmers cultivating RoFR lands would be provided solar pump sets, sprinklers, drip irrigation systems and saplings of fruit crops, free of cost, under the Indira Soura Giri Jala Vikasam scheme. The flagship scheme will benefit tribal farmers holding land titles under the RoFR Act across the State over the next three years. He emphasised that there is no shortage of urea and the government is taking all the necessary steps to meet the demand for urea in the current kharif season. He directed the officials to prepare plans to promote fish seed farming through women self-help groups in each district. The government is presently releasing 89 crore fish seed into water bodies annually by purchasing them from other areas, he noted, highlighting the vast potential for creation of livelihood and income generating opportunities for women by involving the SHGs in fish seed farming. He asked the officials to submit details of number of saplings planted under Vanamahotsavam programme over the past ten years, expenditure incurred and survival rate. Mr. Vikramarka instructed the officials to ensure quality food is served to students in Welfare and Gurukul schools in strict adherence to the prescribed menu and regular medical check-ups for students.
