Workshop to boost climate-smart aquaculture ends

Ludhiana: A capacity building training programme on biofloc aquaculture system (BFAS), spanning three days, was organised recently by Gadvasu's College of Fisheries (COF). Its objective was to promote climate smart intensive aquaculture in the northern part of the country.

Fifteen stakeholders including fish/shrimp farmers, aspiring entrepreneurs and students from various districts of Punjab and the neighbouring states took part in the training. Six of the participants were women.
Jatinder Paul Singh Gill, vice-chancellor, Gadvasu, said, "It is vital to adopt sustainable and resource efficient aquaculture production technologies to meet future production targets, addressing emerging challenges like climate change, depleting water resources and food safety.
Such indoor, bio-secure and low-volume aquaculture systems offer a way to produce safe food with minimal environmental impact.

Meera D Ansal, dean, COF said a Capacity Building Resource Centre (CBRC) for intensive aquaculture technologies was set up in the university under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), to cater to increasing regional capacity building demand for intensive aquaculture technologies like recirculatory aquaculture system (RAS) and BFAS.
As compared to traditional pond aquaculture, the said climate smart, water saving and high yielding aquaculture technologies utilise only 10%-15% of the water/land resources per kg of fish production, she added.
Vaneet Inder Kaur coordinated the training programme tailored into technical sessions and practical demonstrations. It was executed by technical coordinators Amit Mandal and SN Datta. With rigorous hands-on training sessions, the trainees were apprised of all technical aspects and best management practices for BFAS by Mandal.

Datta also introduced the trainees to RAS.
Ravinder Singh Grewal, director of extension education, addressed the trainees and acquainted them with various utility services offered by the university to the livestock, poultry and fish/shrimp farmers. The participation of young fish and shrimp farmers in the training indicates positive growth and prospective future of the fisheries sector, he added.

A boneless catfish called Pangas — or Pangasius — is fast becoming the poster child for a new wave of aquaculture and culinary experiment in the state, offering consumers a cleaner, safer, and more palatable alternative to traditional varieties. And for farmers, it's a high-yield, fast-turnover crop that's reshaping the economic landscape of fish farming. "Punjabis generally avoid fish with bones or spikes," said Dr Meera D Ansal, dean of the College of Fisheries at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Gadvasu). "Traditional fish like Singhara, Mali and Sohl are seasonal, hard to farm, and full of bones. That's where Pangas fits the bill." With its neutral flavour, boneless texture, and rapid growth cycle, Pangas is ideally suited for the Punjabi palate — and the Punjabi farm. Already popular in southern India, the catfish is now being grown across 60 acres in Punjab by 25-odd farmers, producing nearly 500 tonnes annually and cutting the state's dependence on frozen imports from Andhra Pradesh. All of it is consumed within the state. Punjab's 44,000 acres of aquaculture land are still largely dominated by carp species like Rohu, Mrigal, Catla, and Grass Carp — mostly consumed by migrant communities — but Pangas is fast catching up. What makes Pangas stand out is its efficiency. It delivers 7-8 tonnes per cycle in about eight months — nearly three times the yield of traditional carps — while using less water and requiring less space. It can even be farmed indoors using biofloc, RAS (recirculating aquaculture systems), and other controlled methods, making it ideal for water-scarce regions or land-locked farmers. "The farming of Pangas within Punjab means access to fresh, preservative-free fish for local consumers," Dr Ansal said. "We're also promoting value-added products like fish fillets, fingers, balls, keema, pickles and protein powder, which open new markets and increase farmer profits." With growing concerns over pollution in natural rivers, the controlled farming of Pangas presents a safer and more sustainable option for health-conscious consumers. Its high protein content and easy digestibility also make it a strong candidate for inclusion in nutritional programmes. Still, the journey isn't without its challenges. Pangas does not spawn naturally during winter, and Punjab currently relies on seed stock from other states. Gadvasu now invests in hatchery and broodstock research to develop local seed supply and close the loop on production. "We're working towards year-round availability with the help of cold storage and processing infrastructure," Dr Ansal said. Mandya: With an impressive annual fish production of nearly 30,000 tonnes, Mandya district holds significant potential in the fisheries sector. Deputy commissioner Kumara emphasised the urgent need to establish a well-structured market system to support and encourage fish farmers. He addressed the district-level review meeting of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) for the financial year 2025–26, held at the DC's office and organised by the department of fisheries. Highlighting the district's fishery resources, Kumara noted that Mandya has 865 lakes—including 177 departmental lakes and 688 gram panchayat lakes—as well as 26 river stretches and four reservoirs used for fish cultivation. In the financial year 2024–25 alone, 306 lakes were developed to enhance fish farming. The district is home to 47 fishermen cooperative societies, supporting over 45,000 fishermen. Kumara stressed the importance of equipping these fishermen with advanced training and best practices in fishery techniques to improve productivity and sustainability, he said. Over the past five years, 742 beneficiaries availed support under the PMMSY, with a cumulative financial assistance of Rs 513.3 lakh disbursed. For the year 2024–25 alone, Rs 224.2 lakh was sanctioned. The DC directed officials to ensure effective utilisation of these funds and promote fish farming even in agricultural ponds. Zilla panchayat CEO KR Nandini, who also spoke on the occasion, underlined the need for continuous training for beneficiaries and called for strict monitoring to prevent misuse of the scheme's benefits.

Bathinda: The careers of 80 Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) graduates from the College of Veterinary Science, Rampura Phul, Bathinda, hang in the balance after the Punjab State Veterinary Council (PSVC) cancelled their registrations. The measure was taken a month ago after it emerged that the govt-run college, though affiliated with Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Gadvasu), lacks recognition from the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) and is not listed in Schedule-I of the Indian Veterinary Council (IVC) Act. The affected graduates, who completed their five-year BVSc course in March 2025, were shocked to receive a PSVC notice on June 28, declaring their registrations "cancelled with immediate effect". They were further instructed to surrender their certificates by July 3, under threat of legal action. On Monday, the graduates staged a protest, demanding immediate action from authorities to validate their degrees and safeguard their professional prospects. "We paid a huge fee for five years, only to be told our college isn't recognised," said a graduate. Dr Digvijay Singh, dean, College of Veterinary Science, Rampura Phul, said that Gadvasu authorities are in continuous dialogue with the Union ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying. The objective, he stated, is to secure recognition for the college and its inclusion in Schedule-I of the IVC Act. According to Dr. Singh, a VCI team inspected the college in Feb and subsequently recommended recognition to the Union ministry. While the ministry raised certain queries, the university has since provided the necessary clarifications.
