India Today8 hours ago
French winger Kingsley Coman is set to leave Bayern Munich for Al-Nassr after agreeing to a deal worth just under 30 million euros, according to several reports, including one from Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The 28-year-old has accepted a three-year contract and is expected to complete his medical and sign later this week. The move will see Coman join forces with Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Man, and Joo Flix in what is quickly becoming one of the most star-packed squads in the Saudi Pro League. Under coach Jorge Jesus, Al-Nassr has been busy in the transfer market this summer, aiming to strengthen their push for the league title and continental trophies.advertisement
At Bayern, Coman's role diminished last season, particularly after Luis Daz's arrival from Liverpool. With his contract running until 2027 and significant wages on the books, the transfer gives Bayern room to restructure their squad while giving Coman a fresh start in a more prominent role.Coman leaves Munich with a glittering record — 339 games, 72 goals, nine Bundesliga titles, three German Cups, six Super Cups, and the 2020 Champions League, where he scored the decisive goal in the final against former club Paris Saint-Germain. Having also lifted league titles with PSG and Juventus, he has won a domestic league in every season of his professional career. Now, his next challenge will be bringing that same winning touch to Saudi Arabia.- Ends

PSG drop Gianluigi Donnarumma from Super Cup squad as summer exit looms

Paris Saint-Germain have dropped goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from their squad for Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup, a clear indication that the Italian's exit from the club is imminent. This move comes amid mounting reports that Donnarumma will leave PSG this summer, with no plans to extend his current contract, which runs until June of the high-profile fixture against Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur in Udine, Italy, Donnarumma, 26, who played a pivotal role in PSG's recent successes-including their Champions League triumph and Ligue 1 title last season-has been left out of the travelling squad. Yet, despite his integral contributions, his relationship with the club has reportedly "completely broken down," according to reliable reports suggest that contract renewal negotiations have stalled, with PSG appearing intent on moving forward without the Italian goalkeeper. The arrival of French goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille for a reported 47 million reinforces this narrative. Chevalier, 23, impressed during the previous Ligue 1 campaign and is set to become coach Luis Enrique's first-choice goalkeeper going forward. Meanwhile, sources close to the player indicate that Donnarumma's camp are unhappy with how the club has handled the situation this summer. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has stated that a summer move away from Paris is "100% guaranteed," though Donnarumma has not ruled out the possibility of leaving on a free transfer when his contract expires next year. The Premier League is widely regarded as his most probable destination, with Manchester United and Manchester City leading the United appear particularly well placed to secure the Italian's signature, especially after Manchester City's recent re-signing of James Trafford from Burnley for 27 million. The Red Devils have already spent nearly 200 million this summer on new signings, including Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, signalling their intent to strengthen all areas of the squad. Current United first-choice goalkeeper Andr Onana has missed the entire pre-season due to a hamstring injury, intensifying the need for reinforcements in goal ahead of their Premier League opener against joining PSG from AC Milan in 2021, Donnarumma has made over 160 appearances for the club, helping secure four league titles alongside the coveted Champions League trophy. His performances last season earned him a place in UEFA's Champions League team of the season, underscoring his status as one of the world's top goalkeepers.- Ends

How Mohamed Salah keeps asking tough questions despite his superstar status

The death of one of the most prolific Palestinian footballers ever and the reaction to the news from one of the game's most popular players put an unlikely spotlight from the footballing world on the violence in Gaza. Last week, the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) announced that 41-year-old forward Suleiman al-Obeid died in an Israeli attack in Southern Gaza. On Saturday, Liverpool and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah – one of the most high-profile Arab sportspersons – criticised the tribute issued by UEFA, purportedly asking the European football body to acknowledge that al-Obeid had been killed during an Israeli attack in Gaza. 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?' he wrote on X. A news report by Reuters quoted al-Obeid's family, which consists of his widowed wife and five children, claiming that al-Obeid was queuing to collect food for his family when an Israeli tank shelling killed the 41-year-old. The PFA's statement relayed the same reasons for his demise. 'The number of footballers killed or who died from starvation has reached 421, including 103 children,' their statement read further. According to the United Nations human rights office, since May of this year, 1,373 Palestinians have now been killed while seeking food. Al-Obeid had represented the Palestine football team since 2007, turning up for his national side 24 times and scoring two goals. Throughout his career, he has been a regular in the domestic football league of Palestine, representing his club in Gaza City at the time when the conflict broke out in October 2023. Until late 2023, domestic football was ongoing in Palestine across multiple tiers and regions, which is where al-Obeid made his name. And according to the PFA, he scored more than 100 goals. He plied his trade with Markaz Shabab al-Am'ari in the occupied West Bank, and a variety of other teams in the league system in the country, including at Gaza Sports Club. His exploits earned him the 'Palestinian Pele' tag. Football has been among the most popular sports in the country, and their national team, which became a fully FIFA member in 1998, has stayed active despite the violence that has broken out in their country for the last 18 months. They have played 27 matches since October 2023, including at last year's AFC Asian Cup and in qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which ended for them in disappointment in June. They played their 'home' fixtures in other countries like Jordan and Malaysia. Salah has spoken on the Palestinian issue in the past. In October 2023, the Egyptian had posted a video pleading for peace. 'It is not always easy to speak in a time like this. There has been too much violence and too much heartbreak and brutality,' he had said. The 33-year-old, who is the third-highest goalscorer for Liverpool with 245 to his name in just over 400 games, has enjoyed a phenomenal amount of popularity in his home country, as well as in North Africa and the Gulf region. And having won over the people of Liverpool with his exploits on the field ('If he scores another few, I'll be Muslim too,' being a popular chant heard at Anfield over the last eight years), his fame in the UK has been significant too. Salah's soft-spoken image and through the way he observes his faith – in an interview with TIME that profiled him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, he said, 'I think we need to change the way we treat women in our culture.' – he has played a part in changing the attitudes of Britons towards Muslims. A Stanford University study in 2019 observed that in the Merseyside region of England, hate crimes against Muslims dropped by 18.9% after Salah arrived at Liverpool. Islamophobic social media posts also saw a decrease. But with Israel's war on Gaza, he is forced to juggle his popularity in two opposing parts of the world, perhaps why he has been restrained in his statements on the conflict, and also why it was a surprise for a player of his popularity to criticise UEFA on the subject.
