What is Bitcoin Pizza Day and how it became a crypto holiday

Time of India22-05-2025
Sometimes simple moments in life turn into historic ones. Like it happened with
Laszlo Hanyecz
, an early Bitcoin miner who spent some of his
digital currency
on a pizza purchase and unknowingly created history.
Bitcoin Pizza Day
is celebrated in the memory of that simple moment that reshaped the way we think about money and investment.
Today, cryptocurrencies are used for everyday purchases and even recognized by some governments.
But 15 years back, its valuation was close to nothing. A lighthearted yet crucial moment occurred on May 22 when two early adopters had a quirky exchange, marking the first real-world purchase made with Bitcoin - two large size
Papa John's Pizza
.
This explains why the day is annually celebrated as Bitcoin Pizza Day - to mark an important moment in the history of digital money.
It's no surprise that every May 22, the crypto community enjoys the day with their favourite pizza on what is now known as Bitcoin Pizza Day.
The slice that started it all
To make it clear, Laszlo Hanyecz, a programmer and early Bitcoin miner, wasn't short of money when he decided to spend some bitcoins on a pizza purchase. In an interview he revealed he thought it would be really cool if he just traded the 'internet sourced money' for a real world good purchase.
On why he chose to buy pizza, and not anything else, he explained that food is a basic necessity and that every geek understands pizza.
On the bitcointalk forum, he offered 10K bitcoins in exchange for pizza and soon somebody accepted the offer paying for the pizzas that shortly arrived at his doorsteps. Hanyecz estimated the person would have spent around $30-$40 at the time on the bitcoins which approximately value over $1 billion currently.
However, at that time, nobody would have imagined it could create this much fortune as they weren't worth anything.
For Hanyecz, it wasn't about price but proof: that Bitcoin could be used to buy something tangible in the real world.
What he didn't know at the moment was that he was creating history. It marked the first documented commercial transaction using Bitcoin, a point when the cryptocurrency transformed from an idea into a functioning, spendable currency.
Hanyecz while looking back at the day still can't believe there is a day in his honour.
From $40 to over $1 billion
Today, those same 10,000 BTC are worth over $1.1 billion. On Pizza Day 2025, Bitcoin even surged to an all-time high above $111,800.
The story has become legend. Hanyecz himself mined the coins when Bitcoin was valued at less than a penny. In interviews, he's expressed no regrets, saying the transaction 'made Bitcoin real' to him. 'I was winning the internet that day,' he once joked, recalling the novelty of paying for a meal with digital tokens created out of thin air.
How pizza sparked a movement
Since that 2010 exchange, Bitcoin has evolved into a global financial asset. It's used today to purchase homes, cars, airline tickets, and even pay for taxes in some jurisdictions. Bitcoin Pizza Day, celebrated with themed events, online tributes, and of course, pizza parties, reminds the community of Bitcoin's revolutionary journey, from cypherpunk curiosity to financial powerhouse.
The man behind the meal
What's often missed in this tale is the extent of Hanyecz's Bitcoin pizza spending.
Between May and August 2010, he spent nearly 100,000 BTC on pizza which is more than $11 billion at today's prices. He posted his offer on the Bitcointalk forum and kept it open until it became unsustainable to mine 'thousands of coins a day.'
As a developer, Hanyecz was more than just a hungry enthusiast. He was the first to show that
Bitcoin mining
could be accelerated using GPUs, a discovery that helped spark the arms race in mining power.
He also developed the first MacOS Bitcoin client, contributing significantly to the ecosystem's early infrastructure.
Why Bitcoin Pizza Day still matters
Bitcoin Pizza Day is more than just a meme, it showed that Bitcoin could be transacted, traded, and valued in a tangible way. This marked an important step in Bitcoin's evolution into a tool for commerce, investment, and financial independence.
What makes this day significant in history is that it reminds us that no matter how powerful, every technology has a humble beginning. A simple idea of exchanging
Bitcoin for pizza
helped turn the cryptocurrency into what it is today.

Another step towards de-dollarisation? Why is China expanding into digital currencies?

There's a quiet change sweeping China's economy. The Asian giant is slowly but steadily pushing forward with digital currencies — there are reports that it is even considering a yuan-pegged stablecoin. The move is pegged to the country's long-term ambition to counter the dominance of the US dollar in trade and finance China's official app for digital yuan is seen on a mobile phone next to 100-yuan banknotes. Representational image/Reuters China has long been trying to establish its yuan, or renminbi, as an alternative to the dollar. Beijing has expressed its desire to overcome the sway of the US dollar in international trade and finance. However, restrictions on access to Chinese financial markets and limits on convertibility of the yuan, has been a huge obstacle blocking its global use. However, it is now being reported that China is considering allowing the usage of yuan-backed stablecoins for the first time to boost wider adoption of its currency globally. Reuters reports that the plan is expected to include targets for usage of the Chinese currency in the global markets and outline the responsibilities of domestic regulators, adding that the roadmap will also include guidelines for risk prevention. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Are you confused about what all this means? Are you lost when it comes to the meaning of stablecoins and more? We explain. What are stablecoins and how do they work? Stablecoins are digital currencies whose value is linked to a specific currency such as the US dollar. They can be used as a substitute in situations where currency transactions might be difficult or costly. They are different from cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin in that their only purpose is to be a means of payment, not an investment meant to be traded to gain value. Dollar stablecoins are typically bought and sold for $1 each. They are based on a reserve equal to their value, but are issued by private institutions, not central banks like the US Federal Reserve. Stablecoins are not digital central bank currencies, which are digital versions of currencies issued by central banks. They are based on blockchain-based distributed ledgers. They are 'stable' in the sense that their value is anchored to the currency they are based on. Critics of stablecoins say that since they are essentially a proxy for ordinary currencies that can bypass banking systems and safeguards set up to manage traditional financial transactions they may be most useful for illegal purposes. How is China inching towards digital currencies? China launched its own digital yuan, the e-CNY issued by its central bank, on a trial basis in 2019, and McDonalds was an early participant in that project. Chinese regulators have banned mining, trading and other dealings in private, decentralised digital currencies like Bitcoin, while encouraging use of the digital yuan. The nearly universal use of electronic payments has facilitated use of the e-CNY in the Chinese mainland, with some cities using it to pay wages of civil servants. State media reported that as of July 2024, there were 7.3 trillion yuan worth of transactions using the currency in areas where it is being used on a trial basis. China has also been promoting use of e-CNY in Africa, as it expands business dealings on the continent. But e-CNY are not stablecoins. Experts say regulations are needed to safely manage use of stablecoins and to ensure they could be used smoothly with bank accounts and payment systems. A sign indicating digital yuan, also referred to as e-CNY, at a shopping mall in Shanghai, China. It's important to note that stablecoins are not digital central bank currencies. File image/Reuters What is Hong Kong's role in digital currencies? Hong Kong, a former British colony that has its own financial markets, currency and partly autonomous legal system, enacted a stablecoin law that took effect on August 1. Aimed at attracting wealthy investors who want to use digital currencies and other financial products, it requires that a stablecoin linked to the Hong Kong dollar must be equal to the Hong Kong dollar reserves for that digital currency. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD As a global duty-free port and financial hub, Hong Kong has often served as a base for trying out paths toward liberalising Chinese financial markets. But new regulations specifically governing yuan stablecoin would be needed if such a digital currency were issued for use in Hong Kong, Liu Xiaochun, deputy director of the Shanghai Institute of New Finance, recently wrote in a report on the Chinese financial website As of June, the yuan was the sixth most active currency for global payments by value, with a share of 2.88 per cent. File image/Reuters What are China's limits on cross-border dealings? China's currency is not freely convertible in world financial markets and its stringent controls on foreign exchange are the biggest hindrance toward making the yuan a global currency, experts say. According to the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, or Swift, as of June, the yuan was the sixth most active currency for global payments by value, with a share of 2.88 per cent. Its use peaked in July 2024 at about 4.7 per cent. It's used more often in trade financing, where it accounts for nearly six per cent of such dealings, according to that report. The lion's share of yuan transactions take place in Hong Kong. The US dollar's share as a global payment currency was over 47 per cent as of June, followed by the euro, the British pound, the Canadian dollar and the Japanese yen, the report said. Crypto market on edge: BTC, ETH fight to hold gains amid ETF outflows

The cryptocurrency market is attempting a modest recovery, with flagship token Bitcoin (BTC) stabilising above the $113,600 mark after briefly slipping below $112,400 earlier. Ethereum (ETH) has also shown resilience, trading above the $4,200 level. Despite the bounce, analysts believe that institutional flows continue to reflect caution. On August 20, BTC exchange-traded funds (ETFs) saw outflows totaling $315.9 million, while ETH ETFs registered $250.2 million in redemptions. This marked the fourth consecutive day of net outflows, highlighting persistent investor hesitation. At last check, Bitcoin was trading at $113,637, up 0.10 per cent, with a 24 hours trading volume of $65.36 billion. The leading cryptocurrency remains about 8 per cent below its all-time high of $124,457, reached on August 14, according to CoinMarketCap. Its market capitalisation stands at $2.26 trillion, reinforcing its dominance in the digital asset space. Over the past 24 hours, BTC has fluctuated within the range of $112,387 to $114,802. Bitcoin faces resistance at $116,700–$118,200 As Bitcoin (BTC) attempts a rebound from recent lows, analysts remain divided on whether the recovery has strong legs. The flagship cryptocurrency has bounced back from the $112,000 zone, but concerns over macroeconomic uncertainty continue to cloud the outlook. According to Riya Sehgal, research analyst at Delta Exchange, market sentiment has seen a slight shift in favour of the bulls, following Bitcoin's bounce from the recent dip. 'Caution persists with US rate cut uncertainty in focus, and a clearer market direction is likely to emerge after these events,' she said. Despite this recovery, Sehgal believes the overall technical picture remains weak. On the 4-hour chart, Bitcoin is still trading below key moving averages, suggesting that the broader trend remains bearish. Echoing the cautious optimism, Edul Patel, Co-founder and CEO of Mudrex, noted that the crypto market is in the early stages of a recovery, with several major tokens posting gains. Patel pointed out that Bitcoin is currently testing immediate resistance near $114,600. If the rally gains traction, the next key resistance levels to watch are $116,700 and $118,200. 'A clean breakout above $118,200 would confirm that momentum is back in favour of the bulls,' Patel said. Ethereum, Other altcoins trade higher Ethereum (ETH) is showing early signs of short-term bullish momentum on the 1-hour timeframe, supported by a 20/50 EMA bullish crossover. At last check, ETH was trading 2.62 per cent higher at $4,286, with a 24-hour trading volume of $47.09 billion. According to Sehgal, the $4,322–$4,350 zone, where the 100 and 200 EMAs cluster, remains a key resistance area to clear. Among other altcoins, OKB (OKB), Morpho (MORPHO), Conflux (CFX), GateToken (GT), Pudgy Penguins (PENGU), Aave (AAVE), Story (IP), Dogecoin (DOGE), Algorand (ALGO), Sonic (S), and PancakeSwap (CAKE) were the top gainers on CoinMarketCap, rising by up to 52 per cent. On the flip side, Mantle (MNT) was the top loser, trading 9 per cent lower. Further, among the popular altcoins, Solana (SOL) was trading 3.54 per cent higher, Cardano (ADA) was up 3 per cent, Binance Coin (BNB) gained 3.4 per cent, Sui (SUI) rose 1.12 per cent, Hyperliquid (HYP) was up 0.99 per cent, and Ripple (XRP) advanced 0.81 per cent.
