Crown expected to finish submissions in world junior sex assault trial
Prosecutor Meaghan Cunningham argued Thursday that the complainant's actions should not be judged based on what others believe she should have done that night.
The Crown has previously argued the woman did not voluntarily consent to the sexual acts that took place in a London, Ont., hotel room in the early hours of June 19, 2018, and that the accused did not take reasonable steps to confirm her consent.

Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube and Callan Foote have pleaded not guilty to sexual assault, while McLeod has also pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of being a party to the offence of sexual assault.

World junior defence wraps closing submissions, Crown begins final pitch
Defence lawyers representing the players made their closing submissions to the judge earlier this week, focusing largely on the complainant's credibility and reliability as a witness.

Lawyers for McLeod, Hart, Formenton and Dube argued their clients had consensual sexual contact with the woman, while Foote's lawyer argued he didn't touch her, sexually or otherwise.
Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia is expected to deliver her ruling in the case on July 24.

Devoe's daughter, Melinda Russell, is deeply concerned that Merrick is now up for parole. Russell says she has reviewed the reports from Correctional Service Canada and doesn't believe Merrick has changed. 'I don't see any significant progress there on the inmate's part or any significant interventions that might say this fella is better,' Russell said.

Woman sexually assaulted by man who offered ride home after Canada Day: Edmonton police
Edmonton police are looking for help identifying a man suspected of offering a woman a ride home, but instead taking her to a secluded area and sexually assaulting her around Canada Day. The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. on July 2, when a woman near Jasper Avenue and 113 Street was attempting to secure an Uber ride home. That's when police said an unknown man in a car stopped and offered her a ride for free. Police have since confirmed the suspect is not an Uber driver, and did not identify himself as such when offering the ride. When the woman got into the vehicle, police said the man drove her to a residential construction site in the Blatchford neighbourhood and sexually assaulted her. He then drove away, leaving the woman behind in the sparsely-populated under-construction area of central Edmonton. He drove a black Audi, believed to be the A4 model, police said. Due to the nature of the sexual assault, EPS said investigators believe there may be additional complainants and are asking anyone who may have experienced a similar incident to come forward. U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced Tuesday the opening of a new migrant detention centre, coined the Speedway Slammer, that will house 1,000 inmates detained as part of President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown. The Indiana-based facility, built in partnership with the state Department of Corrections, will hold 'some of the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens arrested by ICE,' the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement on Tuesday. Noem announced the centre on X, saying, 'COMING SOON to Indiana: The Speedway Slammer. Today, we're announcing a new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand detention bed space by 1,000 beds,' she wrote.
