Be friends with kids, advise experts as cops flag Insta concerns
Kolkata: If you have a teenager, who spends a good part of the day on social media, it is important that you try and know how your ward is conducting himself or herself in the virtual world.
With message to the parents, Lalbazar has asked them to be vigilant about their children's online activities, especially Instagram and FaceTime, to ensure they do not become victims of cybercrime.
The Kolkata Police cyber cell has posted a 22-second video on their X handle in this regard. The post, in Bengali, aims to address a larger section of residents. "Be friends with your children. Teach them about the latest online crimes.
Check where they are going and whom they are in touch with. Try to understand what they want. Do not merely rebuke them," stated the post.
Cops stated that with cases of Instagram stalking and threats on the rise, parents need to "become friends" with their children and keep talking to them to understand what they are experiencing in the virtual world.
"My child is in Class 8. At the end of the day, I make it a point to speak to him about his day, his interaction with friends, most of which happen online during the day.
I have ensured that in this relationship, we trust each other," said Angshuman Roy, a techie residing at Patuli.
Cops recalled how a parent had filed a case last year against a social media platform under the Pocso Act. The complaint alleged that the Meta-owned photosharing platform Instagram of hosting indecent content featuring children. A FIR was filed by the cyber police station of Dakshin Dinajpur named Instagram as a co-accused in an offence under Section 12 of the Pocso Act and Section 67 (B) of the IT Act, 2000.
"I have a daughter who is entering college this year. Her life revcolves around Instagram. I have had number of conversations with her on this issue. Initially resistant, she now realizes that it is for her own good that I am kept in the loop. However, I make it a point not to intrude in her piracy," said Ritika Sen, a single mother.
The post has also provided the 1930 number to report any cybercrime involving a child. The police have also asked anyone facing cyberbullying to contact the 1930 helpline number immediately for redress rather than suffer silently.
"Children have access to smartphones from a very early age now. This results in easy access to the internet even as they remain unaware of the basic safeguards they need to maintain. Cyberbullying is a serious issue, where random people needlessly troll others insensitively during online interaction. Here, the role of the parent is important, and guiding the child—who can get easily influenced by peers—needs to be done.
Hence, there is more need for cyber security awareness among children as well as the parents, which can keep the wards safe," said the officer.
Shovana Mukherji, a counsellor who specializes in conseling minors insist that parental involvement should be supportive not intrusive. "While monitoring is understandable, it should be done transparently with an emphasis on open conversation. Excessive monitoring can damage trust, sense of self-identity, increase secrecy and strain the parent-child relationship.
Instead of only monitoring content, parents should be encouraged to educate the vulnerable children about safe online practices," said Mukherji.
Schools are also aware of the social media challenges and are encouraging parents to play an important role in preventing children. Rishi Aurobindo Memorial Academy principal Bobby Baxter said, "We understand that social media can be a powerful tool for communication and self-expression, but it can also be misused in ways that can harm individuals.
We educate our students and parents through awareness and workshop programmes and counselling with the help of the local cyber cell.
"
Bivas Chatterjee, special PP and cyber law expert, stated that there should be caution in uploading a child's information. "Whether it is the Pocso Act or Juvenile Justice Act, the child's rights are protected. The US and European nations are dealing with multiple suits on this issue. It just goes on to show that a child's rights are sacrosanct, and parents have a responsibility in safeguarding the same," said Chatterjee.

When asked whether they were aware of the controversial content Sharmistha had been posting, Panoli was candid: 'She would show us some videos, even we did not like some videos and we would tell her that. We had also deleted some of the videos. When she posted that video, we had asked her to delete the video. This (the case) must have been a good lesson for her.' Sharmistha was arrested by Kolkata Police on May 30 from a hotel in Gurugram. The arrest stemmed from a video she posted regarding Operation Sindoor, which was deemed communal in nature. Though she had deleted the video and issued an apology on May 15, an FIR was lodged against her at the Garden Reach Police Station in Kolkata. Granting her bail, the court noted the complaint did not disclose any cognisable offence. The conditions for bail include surrendering her passport, cooperating with the investigation, and furnishing a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The court also directed that she be given police protection due to threats received after the video went viral. The arrest sparked wider political reactions, with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari calling it 'police overzealousness' and 'a case of police atrocities'.

The initiative is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. CM Sarma informed that the government has distributed arms, ammunition, and vehicles to Forest protection personnel, ranges, and divisions. While addressing the reporters, CM Sarma said, 'Today, we are celebrating World Environment Day with many programs. We have launched a portal today to inspire people to plant a tree in the name of their mother. We have distributed arms and ammunition to our Forest protection forces personnel and also given vehicles for our ranges and divisions.' CM Sarma appealed to the people of Assam to participate in the tree plantation drive. 'I appeal to the people of Assam to plant a tree in the name of their mother, inspired by our PM Narendra Modi,' he said. Regarding the case of Wajahat Khan, who filed a police complaint against Sharmishta Panoli, CM Sarma stated that the court of Assam has issued a warrant. However, he expressed doubts about the cooperation from the West Bengal Police. CM Sarma said, 'The court of Assam has issued a warrant. It all depends on cooperation from the West Bengal Police. Assam Police is camping in Bengal, I doubt whether or not they will cooperate with Assam Police.' CM said. Recently, the Calcutta High Court rejected the interim bail plea of Social media influencer Sharmishta Panoli, a 22-year-old law student from Pune. Panoli was arrested by Kolkata Police in Gurugram on Friday for allegedly hurting religious sentiments with a video on Operation Sindoor. The Instagram clip was reportedly derogatory towards a particular religion. However, Panoli had deleted the video and issued an apology on May Saturday, Panoli was produced before the Alipore Court in Kolkata, which remanded her in judicial custody for 14 days. On the state flood situation, CM Sarma said that while the situation has improved, it is a temporary relief. 'The situation has improved, and the people have started returning to their homes from the camps. This was the first wave, and Assam witnesses at least three waves. So, I think, this is temporary relief. I won't say that the situation has improved permanently.', CM Sarma added. On Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Cachar district to take stock of the prevailing flood situation and emphasised that conserving wetlands in and around cities is one of the most effective ways to mitigate urban flooding. CM Sarma underlined the environmental threat posed by the depletion of wetlands. He said that wetlands in and around Silchar, such as Malini Beel, Maheesha Beel, Rangirkhaal and Singerkhal present a vibrant ecosystem serving as natural reservoirs and protecting these wetlands would significantly help in managing urban floods in the town. Acknowledging the efficacy of wetlands as natural drainage basins, the Chief Minister remarked that when wetlands are lost, the situation goes haywire. He added that the government is considering long-term policy measures to address the urban flood crisis sustainably. CM Sarma, upon his arrival in Silchar town, visited six relief camps set up at the Government Boys' HS School, the Normal School, Kendriya Vidyalaya Silchar, Hiron Prova Sishu Mandir, Cosmic Market at Malini Beel and Ukil Bazar LP School. He interacted with the camp inmates to understand their concerns firsthand. The Chief Minister directed District Commissioner Mridul Yadav to provide all essential relief materials to the camp inmates. He also instructed the administration to pay special attention to the needs of senior citizens, lactating mothers, and children, and to ensure 24/7 medical care and access to safe and clean drinking water. CM Sarma said that his government remains committed to ensuring timely assistance, rehabilitation, and support for all those affected by the current wave of floods. (ANI)

Law student Sharmistha Panoli gets interim bail from Calcutta High Court
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 5 (ANI): Law student Sharmistha Panoli, arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through a social media post, has been granted interim bail by the Calcutta High Court on Thursday. The court directed her to cooperate with the investigation, not leave the country, and furnished bail on a personal bond of Rs 10,000. The court also ordered appropriate police protection for her. Her father, Prithviraj Panoli, expressed relief, citing her health issues, including kidney problems and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Prithviraj Panoli said, 'I am very happy... no father would like his daughter to stay in jail. Her mother was crying for a long time, but she is very happy now. There were two concerns, his kidney problem and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). She needs regular medicine, but since we didn't have a prescription, the medicine wasn't given in jail.' 'Also, when the video was posted, we found out after two days, and we told her to delete it. We hoped this would be a lesson for her, and that she would do better in the future,' Panoli said. According to Sharmistha's lawyer, DP Singh, the bail was granted on three conditions: Sharmistha must surrender her passport, must cooperate with the investigation and must sign a bail bond. DP Singh argued that Sharmistha is a victim of circumstances and that her social media post was a defense of her country based on videos she had seen. He questioned the severity of the response, suggesting that the community's reaction was disproportionate to her actions. Speaking to ANI, Advocate DP Singh said, 'She has got bail on 3 conditions, that she will surrender her passport, she will join the investigation and sign a bail is happening right now in the country is wrong. You just arrest speak what they see, their exposure is she said, she said it based on the videos she children don't know is a fight between India & Pakistan and they are just defending their country, so in such a situation... if we remove the clip of 5-10 seconds, she didn't say anything is a victim of circumstances...a whole community has stood up against is not like a riot took place because of what she said, so why is she being punished?' The 22-year-old law student from Pune, Sharmistha Panoli, was arrested by Kolkata Police in Gurugram on May 30, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments with a video on Operation Sindoor. The Instagram clip was reportedly derogatory towards a particular religion. However, Panoli had deleted the video and issued an apology on May 15. (ANI)
