Left parties slam J&K L-G for ‘assault' on CM Omar Abdullah in Srinagar

The Hindu13 hours ago
Strongly condemning the police manhandling of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar, the Left parties accused Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha of undermining the smooth functioning of the duly elected State government.
The CPI(M) Polit Bureau, in a statement in New Delhi, said that the Central government headed by the BJP is trying to enforce its own diktats and regressive points of view. The abolition of holiday on Martyrs' Day is an example of this, it said. 'On the other hand, the birthday of the Maharaja, responsible for killing freedom fighters, is declared a holiday. The Lt. Governor appointed by the Central government is undermining the smooth functioning of the duly elected State government,' the Polit Bureau said.
The CPI(M) also criticised the house arrest of various J&K political leaders, including CPI(M)'s Yusuf Tarigami, who were prevented from paying homage to the martyrs. The party demanded that the holiday on Martyrs' Day be restored 'to respect and protect the democratic rights of the people of J&K'. It also demanded an apology from the Lt. Governor for the 'assault' on the CM.
'Breach of democratic norms'
CPI general secretary D. Raja said that the incident was 'utterly unacceptable'.
'This is not just a breach of democratic norms. It's a blatant assault on our conscience and a reminder of how far governance in J&K has fallen under authoritarian unaccountable rule. CPI demands immediate restoration of statehood — no ifs, no buts — so that the people's representatives can truly serve, instead of being silenced and subjugated,' he posted on X.
Mr. Abdullah, in a post on X, said that he was blocked from offering prayers at the graves of the martyrs on Sunday, at Naqsbandh Sahib shrine at Khawaja Bazar, where 22 civilians killed during an uprising against the Dogra ruler were buried. The Chief Minister scaled the fenced wall of the premises because the security forces had blocked the entrance of the graveyard. A police officer made a bid to stop him from offering 'fateha' at the graveyard.

Bittu Bajrangi placed under house arrest ahead of Nuh yatra

Self-styled cow vigilante Raj Kumar, alias Bittu Bajrangi—one of the prime accused in last year's communal violence during the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra in Nuh—was placed under house arrest in Faridabad till Monday night to prevent his participation in this year's procession. Two armed personnel were deployed outside his residence after police denied him permission to attend the yatra. Raj Kumar, alias Bittu Bajrangi. Bajrangi had approached the Punjab and Haryana high court last week seeking urgent permission to join the yatra, but no hearing date was assigned. He then submitted an undertaking to Nuh and Faridabad police stating he would refrain from making provocative statements or posting controversial content online. Despite this, his request was rejected. The precautionary step came amid heightened security across Nuh after a shrine (mazar) was allegedly vandalised in Sainipura, Tauru, late Sunday night. Authorities suspect the act was intended to disrupt peace ahead of the procession. More than 2,500 police personnel were deployed across the district, with drone surveillance and CCTV monitoring set up at key locations—particularly around Nalhar temple, where suspects had opened fire from hilltops during the 2023 violence. Mobile internet and bulk SMS services were suspended for 24 hours, and the sale of meat was prohibited along the yatra route from Nalhar Mahadev Temple to Jhirkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Ferozepur Jhirka and the Singar Temple in Singar village. Nuh deputy commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena said police responded swiftly to Sunday's incident and held meetings with community stakeholders to maintain calm. 'The situation is completely peaceful. Senior officials were stationed on the ground to ensure law and order,' he said. Meena added that the yatra was held without incident, with devotees offering prayers at multiple temples throughout the district. 'This time, we also stationed police personnel on the hills around Nalhar temple for additional surveillance,' he said. Haryana sports minister Gaurav Gautam, CM Nayab Singh Saini's media advisor Mukesh CL Vashisth, BJP leaders, All India Peace Committee chairman Haji Jaan Mohammad and others welcomed devotees during the procession. Bajrangi, along with another cow vigilante Monu Manesar and Congress MLA Mamman Khan, is among the key accused in the July 31, 2023, communal violence that began in Nuh and spread to Gurugram. The clashes left six people dead, including a home guard, and injured more than 70. Bajrangi has since been barred from entering Nuh without prior permission. Faridabad police spokesperson Yashpal Yadav confirmed that Bajrangi was taken to Saran police station on Sunday evening and gave a written assurance that he would not engage in any activity that could incite tension. Bajrangi later said he had requested to be confined to his home rather than the police station, after which the personnel were posted outside his residence

BJP has ruined UP's education system: Akhilesh

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday slammed the Uttar Pradesh government, alleging that its school merger policy is a conspiracy to deprive the children of poor families of education. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. (HT file) 'The government's decision to close more than 10,000 primary schools is going to destroy the future of children. BJP spends billions of rupees on its publicity but the government does not have money for schools,' the SP chief alleged in a statement. He also alleged that the UP government has ruined the education system in the state. 'Closing schools is a part of BJP's conspiracy. Children of poor families study in council primary schools. The BJP government wants to deprive the poor of education by closing schools. Education, jobs, employment have never been on its agenda. Closing thousands of schools in the state will have a direct impact on the education of girls. How will the girls of poor families in villages go to school far away from their homes,' Yadav alleged. 'The BJP is ruining the future of the state. It is pushing the state backward in every field, including education. BJP wants the poor, backward, Dalits to stay away from education. If they become educated, they will oppose its wrong policies and ask questions. So, it wants to keep them uneducated,' he further alleged. Earlier on Monday morning, Samajwadi Party workers led by SP leader Jaysingh Pratap Yadav from Amethi and others staged a protest against the government's school merger move at Hazratganj crossing.

Priyanka questions U.P. school merger decision, calls it directed against Dalits, backwards

Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday (July 14, 2025) alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh is set to close around 5,000 government schools in the name of merger and described the reported decision not only against the Right to Education, but also against the Dalits, backwards, tribals, minorities, poor, and deprived sections. 'The Uttar Pradesh government is going to close about 5,000 government schools in the name of merger. According to teacher organizations, the government intends to close about 27,000 schools. The UPA government had introduced the Right to Education Act in the country, under which a school was arranged in every village so that education could be made accessible to children from poor families. If schools are located far from homes, how will small children, especially girls, walk several kilometers to reach school? Obviously, their studies will be disrupted. Why is this right being snatched away from children,' wrote the Congress leader on X. She added, 'this order of the BJP government is not only against the right to education but is also against the Dalit, backward, tribal, minority, poor and deprived sections,'. Uttar Pradesh government initiated a plan to merge schools having enrolment of less than 50 students, with nearby educational facility to make the education system more functional and viable. As part of the consolidation plan, students from these schools will be accommodated in nearby facilities to ensure their continued education. The decision faced pushback from many teachers and opposition political parties who dubbed the decision as anti-poor.
