Donkey Kong Might Be Nintendo's Next Cinematic Leading… Ape

Gizmodo14-07-2025
Donkey Kong is having a moment. This summer, not only did Mario's original foe get his first theme park ride in the United States, but he's also got Donkey Kong Bananza, his own mega game coming to Switch 2 later this week, and he might even be getting a movie sometime in the future.
As of right now, we know there are two Nintendo movies in the works. A sequel to the mega-hit Super Mario Bros. movie scheduled for release April 3, 2026, as well as a live-action film based on The Legend of Zelda, which is coming May 7, 2027. That's important because it sets up a quote from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa that sent fan speculation into a frenzy a few weeks back. On an investors call, Furukawa said, 'Although we cannot discuss our plans beyond The Legend of Zelda movie at this time, we are working on various other projects.'
What other projects? Well, soon after, it was discovered that Nintendo Studios and Universal Pictures filed a joint copyright for an 'Untitled Donkey Kong Project' that's classified as a 'motion picture.' io9 reached out to representatives for Universal and Nintendo for comment or clarification but had not yet heard back as of publication. We'll update this piece if or when we do.
Since this appears to be a joint collaboration with Universal and Nintendo, it's safe to assume if a Donkey Kong movie is in the works, it could follow the character in animation. He appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, after all, voiced by Seth Rogen, so maybe this would be an expansion of that world. Maybe it could even lead to other films in that universe—Wario, Luigi, Toad, etc.
But for now, it seems like after the second Mario movie and the first Zelda movie, a Donkey Kong movie is on the way. And, with the character returning to the spotlight in such a big way this summer, we think it makes a lot of sense. What about you?

Sony Reportedly Developing Animated R-Rated VENOM and SPIDER-WOMAN Spinoffs Following SPIDER-PUNK — GeekTyrant

Sony Pictures Animation is swinging deeper into the multiverse. Following the announcement of the Spider-Punk animated feature, now a new report says that Sony has even more Spider-Man spinoffs in the works, including a Spider-Woman project and a surprising R-rated animated Venom film. With Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse set to hit theaters on June 25, 2027, it looks like Sony's animated Spider-Verse universe is far from slowing down. According to industry scooper Daniel Richtman, 'There's also an animated Spider-Women and Venom films in development.' Backing that up, @MyTimeToShineHello recently posted that 'Sony is currently developing an animated Venom film.' This rumor was also reported over a year ago. Even more interesting, the animated Venom movie reportedly has Seth Rogen on board as a writer and producer. Rogen's involvement makes this project especially interesting as he's already got a strong track record with adult comic book adaptations like Preacher , The Boys , Invincible , and The Boys Presents: Diabolical . This Venom spinoff is reportedly aiming for an R-rating, breaking away from the PG-13 tone of the Tom Hardy-led trilogy. Rogen previously opened up about his hesitation to collaborate with major superhero studios, saying, 'Honestly, probably fear… It's mostly a fear of how would we plug into the system they have in place…we're control freaks!' He added, 'We're the producers of this. So we dictated the system.' This animated Venom film would follow Venom: The Last Dance (2024), which wrapped up Tom Hardy's run as Eddie Brock. First appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 back in 1988, the Venom symbiote has had a long history of bonding with different hosts, including Eddie Brock, Mac Gargan, Flash Thompson, and Dylan Brock. As for the Spider-Woman spinoff, it's been rumored for a while now but still hasn't been officially confirmed by the studio. However, these latest developments suggest it might be gaining momentum behind the scenes. Sony hasn't revealed release dates or production timelines for either project yet, but with Spider-Punk already moving forward and Beyond the Spider-Verse on the calendar, the animated side of Sony's Marvel universe is expanding fast. More web-slinging adventures are definitely coming, and if these reports hold, fans are in for some seriously cool stories that push the Spider-Verse in bold new directions.

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. An update has been provided on the status of injured WWE Raw superstar Austin Theory. According to a new report from the former United States Champion has been removed from the company's internal active roster. This move comes after Theory was written off television with a storyline injury two weeks ago. The removal from the active roster is a standard procedural step for a performer who is sidelined for an extended period. Removed From The Active Roster The PWInsider report, citing WWE sources, confirms that Theory is no longer on the internal list of talent available to be booked for television or live events. It is important to note that this does not mean he has been released from his WWE contract. Wrestlers recovering from legitimate, long-term injuries are typically taken off the active roster list until they are medically cleared to return to action. The specific nature and severity of Theory's injury, and a potential timeline for his return, have not yet been publicly disclosed. Fightful Select reports that he's listed with the other injured talent like Zoey Stark and Ilja Dragunov. An Abrupt End To A-Town Down Under Theory's injury has been woven into a major new storyline. On the July 21st episode of Monday Night Raw, his tag team partner, Grayson Waller, announced that their team, A-Town Down Under, was officially "done" due to Theory being on the shelf. HOUSTON, TEXAS - MARCH 11: A general stadium view during WWE Monday Night RAW at Toyota Center on March 11, 2024 in Houston, Texas. HOUSTON, TEXAS - MARCH 11: A general stadium view during WWE Monday Night RAW at Toyota Center on March 11, 2024 in Houston, Texas. Waller showed no sympathy for his partner. He has since been seen on Raw attempting to form new alliances and has cut a scathing social media promo, claiming he "wasted two years" of his career making Theory relevant. This on-screen betrayal sets up a major grudge feud for when Theory is eventually cleared to return. A Career of Highs and Lows Austin Theory's WWE career has been a rollercoaster. He was initially pushed as the hand-picked protégé of Vince McMahon and became the youngest United States Champion and Mr. Money in the Bank in WWE history. However, his momentum stalled after an infamous failed cash-in attempt and a brutal promo from John Cena on the road to WrestleMania 39. He was successfully repackaged alongside Grayson Waller, and the arrogant duo captured the SmackDown Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 40. This latest injury and the split from Waller mark another major turning point in the career of the talented 28-year-old. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.

Brad Pitt's mom, Jane Etta Pitt, dies at 84

Brad Pitt's mom and occasional red carpet plus-one, Jane Etta Pitt, has died. She was 84. The matriarch, who formerly worked as a school counselor and appeared alongside her husband, William, and their Oscar-winning son at the 2012 Academy Awards, died earlier this week, according to TMZ. Representatives for the 61-year-old Oscar winner — who was also photographed with his parents at the 2014 premiere of ex-wife Angelina Jolie's premiere for 'Unbroken' — did not immediately respond to the Daily News' request for comment. Jane was remembered for having 'the biggest heart' and having 'cared deeply for everyone and everything, no questions asked,' said Sydney Pitt, who People identified as Brad's niece. 'She could keep up with all 14 of us grandkids without missing a beat. There was no limit to the love she gave, and everyone who met her felt it,' Sydney said. 'I don't know how we move forward without her. But I know she's still here in every brushstroke, every kind of gesture, every hummingbird. She was love in its purest form.' Pitt fans got a closer look at three generations of the family during the 'Unbroken' premiere, which he attended with both his mom and three of the six children he shares with 50-year-old Jolie. It's unclear how close Jane was to the A-listers' children in recent years, amid their nasty eight-year divorce and legal battle over their French winery. At least three of the exes' kids — daughters Shiloh and Zahara as well as son Maddox — have filed to drop Pitt from their surname. The movie star said 'hi to my mom' during a mid-June screening for the blockbuster 'F1,' telling 'Today' show host Savannah Guthrie, 'She watches you every morning.' He then blew a kiss to the camera, adding, 'To Jane Pitt, I love you.'
