NFL analyst predicts Bears make playoff run after impressive offseason

USA Today6 hours ago

The Chicago Bears are aiming to go from worst to first under new head coach Ben Johnson, which won't be easy in one of the toughest divisions in football. But they've had quite the impactful offseason that could make them a surprising contender.
That started with the hiring of Johnson as head coach and his vision was clear in the team's new additions. Chicago overhauled the entire interior offensive line with the trades for guards Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson and signed center Drew Dalman in free agency. They continued in the draft with tackle Ozzy Trapilo, who's competing for the starting left tackle job.
Meanwhile, the Bears continued to add to their playmakers with the draft selections of tight end Colston Loveland and wide receiver Luther Burden III. They also addressed the defensive trenches with the free-agent additions of defensive tackle Grady Jarrett and defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo.
NFL.com's Bucky Brooks dubbed the Bears one of the five teams that won the 2025 offseason, where he praised the Johnson hiring and Chicago beefing up their pass blockers and pass catchers. But more than that, Brooks expects Chicago to live up to the hype (unlike last year) as a "dark horse contender" that has a chance to "enjoy a worst-to-first rise in the NFC North."
"The table is set for the Bears to make a playoff run this season," wrote Brooks. "They have upgraded their play-caller, playmakers and pass protectors to ensure Williams sparks a turnaround as a sophomore."
There were many who had Chicago pegged as potential contenders last season, following the selection of quarterback Caleb Williams, but that ended with a 5-12 record that included a 10-game losing streak. But this year feels different with Johnson running the show. His vision has been clear with what he's expecting, and he's the kind of leader this team was begging for last season.
Although, the Bears also have the second most difficult strength of schedule this season, so they will be tested. But they'll have a chance to contend if they take care of business in the NFC North.

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | | License Photo June 23 (UPI) -- New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has agreed to purchase a stake in Crystal Palace from American businessman John Textor, the English Premier League soccer franchise announced Monday. Johnson, a former U.S. ambassador to Britain from 2017 to 2021, is purchasing a 43% stake from Textor for $254 million, ESPN reported. "Whilst the completion is pending approval from the Premier League and Women's Super League, we do not envisage any issues and look forward to welcoming Woody as a partner and director of the club," Crystal Palace said in a statement. "We would like to go on record to thank John Textor for his contribution over the past four years and wish him every success for the future." Media outlets reported earlier this month that Johnson was in talks for the ownership stake in the franchise. Crystal Palace's ownership includes two NFL Commanders owners: Josh Harris and David Blitzer, who also have ownership in NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and NHL's New Jersey Devils. English businessman Steve Parish also is a part-owner of the soccer team. In 2022, Johnson made an unsuccessful attempt to buy the English club Chelsea. The Jets were awarded marketing rights in Britain. Johnson, 78, has owned the Jets since 2020, when he bought the franchise for $635 million. Johnson, the heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical company, is worth $3.3 billion, according to Forbes. Crystal Palace won the 2024-25 FA Cup that pits teams in English soccer divisions, and finished 12th in the Premier League. The club plans to play in the Union of European Football Association Europa League. Textor's Eagle Football Holdings Group also owns a controlling stake in French club Lyon, which also qualified for the Europa League. Clubs had until the end of March to change their ownership structures to comply with Europa's multi-club ownership rules, but Palace missed the deadline. Tester, 59, was a Crystal Palace general partner for four years, buying a 40% stake. "We're having extreme success in Brazil and early on in France, [and] to not have that same level of integration with our partner in the UK ... it just becomes more and more clear that that level of collaboration we want and need works," Tester told The Athletic.

Former Pro Bowl WR still sees San Francisco 49ers as Super Bowl contenders

The San Francisco 49ers have been one of the NFL's premier teams over the last 14 years, making it to three Super Bowls, and despite losing all three, they've spent half of those years recording at least 10 wins in a season. Unfortunately, the team stumbled a bit in 2024 after making a Super Bowl run the year prior, finishing with a 6-11 record and in fourth place in the NFC West. This poor performance led to multiple key players leaving in the offseason, including Deebo Samuel, Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga, Charvarius Ward, Leonard Floyd and many others. With those changes, many believe that the 49ers will continue their struggles from last year and miss the postseason for a second year in a row for the first time since 2017-18. However, former NFL wide receiver, three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion Keyshawn Johnson believes San Francisco can still be contenders to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in 2025. "They didn't lose the type of pieces that we think," Johnson said recently on FOX Sports 1's "Speak." "They lost some numbers, but they replaced those numbers in free agency and through the draft. I don't think they're going to fall off at all. I think the culture's still there and the window for the Super Bowl is still wide open. 'Everybody for the most part from the leadership standpoint is in place. In terms of the guy that they may miss the most, probably just Deebo." While the 49ers moved on from so many contributors, they also made it a priority to sign tight end George Kittle, quarterback brock Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner to long-term extensions that should keep the core together for a while. 'You still got Christian McCaffrey, you still got [Brandon] Aiyuk, you still got Fred Warner, you still got Brock Purdy and Kittle and Trent Williams,' Johnson said. 'So you still got [Nick] Bosa and company, they're still there.' If the 49ers are going to contend for the division in 2025, they'll need their veterans to be healthy (which is a big ask for a few of them), and their rookies, including first-round pick Mykel Williams, to hit the ground running. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams joins in on anti-Green Bay chants at Summer Smash

Caleb Williams has been on a Green Bay hate tour as of late. The Chicago Bears quarterback hasn't shied away from sharing his disdain for his NFC North rivals. In fact, he recently was part of a chant taking aim at the Green Bay Packers. Advertisement Over the weekend, Williams was seen at Lyrical Lemonade's Summer Smash Festival in Bridgeview, Illinois. In a video circulating online, a chant of "F--- Green Bay" broke out in a section of the festival, with Williams in the middle of it. Accompanying Williams during the cheer was Cole Bennett, music video director and the founder of the festival's multimedia company, Lyrical Lemonade. A Chicagoland native, Bennett is a Bears fan and has even done collaborations between the team and his company. Williams has had lots to say about the Packers after his rookie season. On June 20, Williams was at Fanatics Fest in New York City, where he was asked about the NFL fan bases he dislikes. "Probably Green Bay," Williams said. "They suck." Advertisement Summer Smash wasn't the first time Williams led a cheer against Green Bay. In June 2024, Williams was seen at a Chicago bar, leading fans in a "Green Bay sucks" chants. All of this comes after Williams and the Bears defeated the Packers in the final game of the 2024 season, which ended the Bears' 11-game losing streak against the Packers. Packers fans will have to wait and see if Williams can back up his words next season, as the Packers welcome the Bears to Lambeau on Dec. 7. The Bears will then host the Green and Gold on Dec. 20 at Soldier Field. Rashad Alexander can be contacted at ralexander@ and 920-431-8214.
