Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the exits of Thembinkosi Lorch and Neo Maema, marking another chapter in a busy clear-out ahead of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.
Lorch's departure comes after weeks of speculation surrounding his future, with a return to North Africa now on the cards.
The Bafana Bafana international spent the second half of last season on loan at Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, where he delivered a string of impressive displays in both the Botola Pro League and the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
The 32-year-old was a standout in Morocco, scoring twice in the league and netting against Juventus in the Club World Cup, while also featuring against Manchester City and Al Ain.
His ability to run at defenders and create moments in big matches made him a fan favourite at the Red Castle, even after the departure of coach Rulani Mokwena, with whom he had reunited in Casablanca.
Sundowns confirmed on Thursday night that Lorch would not be returning to Chloorkop.

Reports from Morocco suggest that a permanent deal with Wydad has been agreed after initial delays in the buyout process.
'THANK YOU, NYOSO. After two unforgettable years, one league title, 26 appearances, seven goals, and four assists, the Yellow Nation thanks and celebrates Thembinkosi Lorch,' Sundowns said in a statement on their social media platforms. '
Lorch joined Sundowns in January 2024 from Orlando Pirates, but despite flashes of quality, he struggled to establish himself in the squad, especially after Miguel Cardoso's arrival as head coach.
Hot on the heels of that announcement, Sundowns also confirmed the exit of Maema, who leaves the Brazilians after four trophy-laden years.
The 29-year-old midfielder arrived in 2021 from Bloemfontein Celtic and went on to make over 100 appearances, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists.
I pray that this thing of releasing players won't backfire, considering the amount of games our team plays every season🤞 — Lethu Godide (@SiphosethuNtul1) August 15, 2025

Kaizer Chiefs: When is Nasreddine Nabi coming back?
Kaizer Chiefs have not been with their head coach, Nasreddine Nabi, since the start of the season. The 60-year-old Tunisian mentor left the country to attend a family emergency earlier this month, leaving his assistant Khalil Ben Youssef in charge. In his absence, Chiefs have won their opening two league games and top the Betway Premiership. Ben Youssef said the Kaizer Chiefs coach is always in contact with the technical team despite being away. 'I think if the coach is here or is not here… we are technical staff, all of us are familiar, we work together, we keep in contact every day,' he told the media. 'Every training session we discuss, we meet via Zoom with the technical staff to discuss all the plans. 'We prepare the team together; Yes, physically, Coach Nabi is not here, but he's with us, we work together, we are a team. 'We help each other, and we don't think about who is not here, who is here – all technical staff work together,' Ben Youssef concluded. Nabi was in charge during Kaizer Chiefs' pre-season in the Netherlands, where the team lost four matches. His last game on the touchline was against Asante Kotoko in the Toyota Cup. Having missed two matches this season, Nabi is set to miss Amakhosi's third league match against Richards Bay on Tuesday. The club have not announced when the coach will return but there has been speculation that he might be back for the Mamelodi Sundowns match. Nabi became the first coach to lift a trophy for Kaizer Chiefs in 10 years. He did so by winning the Nedbank Cup. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. 'You cannot be happy about a draw!'
'I congratulate my boys to come back,' the Pirates coach did say, however. Orlando Pirates will host Stellenbosch on Wednesday in the Betway Premiership, with Abdeslam Ouaddou's Buccaneers still looking for their first win of the season. ALSO READ: – 'We must play to win' – Cardoso on Sundowns' MTN8 ambitions It has been an inauspicious start for Pirates' new head coach, though the Buccaneers showed signs of improvement in holding Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, in the first leg of their MTN8 semifinal. Pirates' Ouaddou – 'I am happy for that, that's it!' 'No you cannot be happy about a draw!,' said Ouaddou after Kamogelo Sebelebele's late strike had at least prevented a third consecutive defeat. 'I congratulate my boys to come back and equalise and bring at least a draw, and still give us an opportunity to go and win the next game. I am happy for that, that's it!' Ouaddou has changed his side around a lot in his first three games in charge, a sign that he is still searching for his best starting XI. On Saturday, Evidence Makgopa got his first start of the season, the striker impressing despite not getting on the scoresheet. 'Makgopa had a great performance. I am very happy with what I have seen,' added Ouaddou. 'Like all his teammates he showed great character today.' 'We have a lot of players. It is not easy for a coach,' said Ouaddou on his team. 'If (Gianni) Infantino changes the law next month (on substitutions) and allows more players on the field, we will be able to make more changes. Everyone is important, all the guys coming in have a chance to perform. 'We need everyone ready' 'They have to grab it and give everything for the team. We are a big club and will play many competitions and we need everyone ready.' Stellenbosch, like Pirates, are still searching for a first league win of the season. Steve Barker's side lost at home to Chiefs and followed that with a 1-1 draw away to Magesi. Photo: Itumeleng English Independent Media Image: Itumeleng English Independent Media After the weekend's explosive MTN8 semi-final first-leg action between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, there is still no clear pointer as to which team will reach the final, following a 1-all draw. In the other semi-final first leg, Stellenbosch FC have one foot in the final after a 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United on a Winelands cabbage patch that is the Danie Craven Stadium. The Sundowns talisman left the pitch early in the first leg against bitter rivals Orlando Pirates, raising concerns about the extent of his latest setback. Despite his attempts to continue, the seasoned player quickly realised he could go no further and exited the field accompanied by medical staff. Let's hope the injury won't keep him out for long. Brain fade and emotions hamstring Sundowns' campaign In the aftermath of Saturday's 1-all draw, Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso criticised the team's inability to maintain composure, noting a decline in 'brainwork' and decision-making. With the second leg on the horizon, Sundowns will be aiming to eradicate the 'brain fade' and ensure emotions don't dictate the outcome. Pirates' Sebelelele looks like the best buy of the transfer window Kamogelo Sebelelele, who joined Pirates from TS Galaxy this window, is already standing out. Technically gifted, aggressive and rapid, he is a nightmare for opponents on the right wing. On Saturday, he showed his versatility when coach Abdeslam Ouaddou moved him to defence — yet he still managed to surge forward to score the equaliser in the dying minutes. Coach Ouaddou predicts Pirates sensation Mbokazi is Euro-bound After the match, all eyes were on 19-year-old centre-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi. Ouaddou praised the young captain's composure and defensive prowess, which kept Sundowns' threats, particularly Iqraam Rayners and Arthur Sales, at bay. Ouaddou went so far as to suggest that if Mbokazi continues this form, a future at a top European club awaits.
