Venice is getting two brand-new art centres in May – here's where to find them
Milan's Brera Modern finally opened its doors at the end of 2024 (after over 50 years in the making), but it's far from the only Italian city to be graced with a stunning new arts space. In fact, Venice has been graced with two.
The Floating City already has a long list of impressive museums and galleries – the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Venice Glass Museum, to name a few – and joining that collection is San Marco Art Centre and the Nicoleeta Fiorucci Foundation.
San Marco Art Centre will be perched on the second floor of the Procuratie in St Mark's Square. The space will have a broad focus on everything from art and fashion to architecture, film and technology.
Inside, there will be 16 galleries, all recently restored by esteemed British architect David Chipperfield. Two inaugural shows will coincide with the Venice Architecture Biennale (which runs from May 10-November 23), on Harry Seidler, an Australian architect, and Jung Youngsun, a Korean landscape designer.
Founders David Hrankovik, Anna Bursaud and David Gramazio describe themselves as 'a spontaneous and experimental organisation, testing traditional models of arts and institutions and exhibition making,' according to The Art Newspaper.
Sounds pretty swish, right? The San Marco Art Centre will open its doors on May 9, and the inaugural exhibitions are on from then until July 13 – there's more information on the SMAC website here.
Next up is the Nicoleeta Fiorucci Foundation, a London-based non-profit organisation founded in 2021 and named after the renowned Italian-born arts patron.
It's taken over a historic building in Venice's Dorsoduro district, which used to be owned by famous painter Ettore Tito back in the '20s, and launches on May 7 with a site-specific installation by Tolia Astakhishivili, a Georgian artist.
This will run until November 23, and also features work by Thea Djordjadze and Zurab Astakhishvili. The foundation aims to fund the renovation and operational costs of the building – there's more information on it here.

British man orders pint in Benidorm but is totally floored by price
A British man recently visited Benidorm and ordered a pint at a well-known bar. The man, who appears to be no stranger to Spain, was taken aback when he was told how much a drink would set him back at the popular holiday hotspot. Known as the Benidorm Fanatic to his TikTok followers, he told people he headed to Uncle Ron's bar, which is said to be "famous" for its pints, notable for how cheap they're sold for. As he ventured to the venue, he was left astoudned at the price list, as he seriously got a lot for his money. In the clip, he said: "I tell you what, I believe it's actually a very, very nice pint as well, so it comes to the equivalent of about 84p in British money. Let's go and try it out, shall we? Let's give it a try." After he made his way to the bar, he added: "So there you go, I'll give you a euro, a €1 pint, and I'll take that. Let's try this €1 pint. Look at that - a nice, clean, cold pint. It's got a nice, good head on it - let's try it. "That is actually one of the best pints I've had in one of the popular bars. That is actually one of the best pints I've had in Benidorm to be honest with you. €1, I'll drink them all day." Since he shared the video, many people have viewed it, and they were quick to comment too. They shared their thoughts, and some posted their own Benidorm stories. One said: "Wow." Another shared: "I was there last week." A third replied: "Lovely pint. Had many." Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "Bargain." If you've never heard of Uncle Ron's before, it's a popular spot for British tourists in Benidorm. As well as being known for its cheap drinks, it also serves food too. According to TripAdvisor, the venue serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and also has 3.8/5 rating on average, according to the review platform. Many people say it's worth a visit if you're looking for a reasonable meal and a few drinks while on holiday. In the review section, one person wrote: "Had a fantastic breakfast at Ron's today. Lovely English produce. Great service. Brilliant staff. "A massive group came in, but they were serviced promptly. Don't know how they manage with so few staff." Another said: "Last day we visited for some lunch before heading to airport. Left full, which is always a good thing. In all my times of going here, never left unhappy at the service nor the food - always really good." A third replied: "We went many times during our two-week holiday. The staff are friendly and extremely hard working day and night. "Cheapest drinks you will find in town and food to suit everyone (daily deal only 6 euros). It's not a stylish 5* restaurant but then you wouldn't expect it. "For drinks just go to the bar like a normal bar. Always busy Sunday and Friday, so expect to book if you want a Sunday lunch. Would we go again? Certainly would!"

Ghost hunt event to take place at Llanyrafon Manor Farm
Llanyrafon Manor Farm, in Cwmbran, is hosting a 12-hour lockdown and fear ball ghost hunt. Those brave enough are invited to bring their own bedding and spend the night inside the reportedly haunted building. (Image: Supplied) The event will include a paranormal investigation with Tracey and Nigel Turner, séance technique experiments, and a free exploration of the site's three acres of grounds. Visitors will have access to most areas, including the Tudor kitchen, Great Chamber, and attic bedrooms. The history of Llanyrafon Manor Farm dates back to the mid-1500s, and it's thought that a timber-framed medieval building stood on the site as far back as the 13th century. The site was possibly a farm for the monks of Llantarnam Abbey, and some of its remains can still be seen today. The Griffiths family owned the manor for centuries, with the earliest member of the family appearing to be Walter Griffith of Llanyrafon, who practised as an attorney and left a will dated November 20, 1629. The manor once stood in a thousand acres of ground, and during the First World War, three Italian prisoners of war worked on the farm. In the Second World War, members of the Women's Land Army worked the farm, learning how to perform tasks including ploughing, milking, harvesting, and digging. Today, Llanyrafon Manor Farm stands as grand as ever, its history once again showcased for all to enjoy. A free breakfast and unlimited teas, coffees, hot chocolate, bottled waters, juice, and biscuits will be available. The event is not open to pregnant ladies or anyone intending to consume drugs or alcohol. Over in Abersychan, Garndiffaith Millennium Hall will host a murder mystery evening. (Image: Supplied) The event, which will run from 6pm to 9pm on Saturday, June 7, invites attendees to come along and solve the mystery. A ploughman's supper is included in the ticket price of £6.50. For those interested in the murder mystery evening, tickets will be available from the hall or via Eventbrite. Flash Back will travel across the border to the Olway Inn, Usk, on Saturday, June 7. Tintern Abbey will also be hosting a historical event over both days of the weekend. (Image: Supplied) Visitors will be able to discover all about monastic life in the high medieval period at one of the nation's largest monasteries of the time. The Chapter of Stronghold re-enactment group will portray the lives of monastic people, including monks, nuns, and laypeople as they write, pray, live, and eat at Tintern Abbey. There will be authentic cooking, manuscript writing, a holy reliquary, and more. Normal admission prices apply for this event.
