Trump extends China tariff deadline for another 90 days
Washington, DC [US], August 12 (ANI): United States President Donald Trump on Monday (local time) signed an executive order extending the China tariff deadline for another 90 days, Al Jazeera decision came just hours before the midnight deadline in Beijing, when the previous 90-day pause was set to expire, CNBC reported on Monday, citing a White House official, quoted by Al on Monday, Trump said he has been 'dealing very nicely with China" as Beijing said it was seeking positive US and China have a history of escalating trade tensions, with tariffs on each other's products reaching prohibitive levels. In April, the US imposed a staggering 145 per cent tariff on Chinese goods, while China retaliated with 125 per cent tariffs on US in May, both countries agreed to temporarily lower tariffs during a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. The US reduced its tariffs from 145 per cent to 30 per cent, and China cut its tariffs from 125 per cent to 10 per cent. But the pause comes as negotiations still loom. Asked about the deadline on Monday, Trump said: 'We'll see what happens. They've been dealing quite nicely. The relationship is very good with [China's] President Xi [Jinping] and myself."'We hope that the US will work with China to follow the important consensus reached during the phone call between the two heads of state," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian in a added that Beijing also hopes Washington will 'strive for positive outcomes on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit."In June, key economic officials convened in London as disagreements emerged and US officials accused their counterparts of violating the pact. Policymakers again met in Stockholm last month, according to Al as both countries appeared to be seeking to push back the reinstatement of duties, US trade envoy Jamieson Greer said last month that Trump will have the 'final call" on any such extension. Ahead of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week in Alaska, US President Donald Trump on Monday claimed that US tariffs on India for buying Russian oil have delivered a "big blow" to Moscow's economy, calling New Delhi one of Russia's "largest or second-largest oil buyers."Speaking at a White House press conference, Trump said Russia's economy was "not doing well" and had been "very well disturbed" by the combined effect of American trade duties and global think Russia has to get back into building their country. It's a massive country... They have tremendous potential in Russia to do well," he said. "They're not doing well right now because it's been very well disturbed by this," news agency PTI quoted him as saying. The president pointed directly to India's energy purchases from Russia as a pressure point. "Doesn't help when the President of the United States tells their largest or second-largest oil buyer that we're putting a 50% tariff on you if you buy oil from Russia. That was a big blow," Trump said, in an apparent reference to India. Trump administration has imposed 25% reciprocal tariffs on India, plus an additional 25% levy on its purchases of Russian oil -- a total 50% tariff. Air India to stop flights to Washington DC from Sept. 1 over planned retrofit
Air India will stop its flights to Washington DC from September 1, 2025 due to shortage of aircraft as it undertakes retrofitment of its legacy widebody aircraft starting with Boeing 787-8s. Last month, the airline sent first of its 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft which will be unavailable for flying till December 2025. Multiple aircraft will remain unavailable over a prolonged period until at least the end of 2026, according to a statement from Air India. The retrofitment of the 787s is expected to conclude by June 2027. The airline will continue to fly to other four U.S. destinations – New York, Newark, Chicago and San Francisco. Last week, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson announced in a townhall that the retrofitment of the legacy Boeing 777 aircraft is once again delayed till mid-2027, three years behind the initial schedule of mid-2024. The retrofit for Boeing 777 is now likely to conclude by October 2028 as per the latest timeline. After taking the delivery of 6 A350s, the next widebody delivery of a new aircraft a Boeing 787 is expected by the end of 2025. The 7th A350 is expected to join Air India only in the third quarter of financial year 2026.
