Edmonton police searching for people alleged to have struck cyclist with SUV on purpose
Police shared a short video Friday that they believe shows the incident in question. The video was taken from inside a vehicle, and police say it was posted to social media.
The video shows an "incredibly disturbing" disregard for life, and its purpose was "simply for online entertainment," said acting Staff Sgt. Richard Windover, of the Edmonton Police Service's traffic services branch, in a news release issued Friday afternoon.
The footage shows the vehicle is trailing a cyclist, who is riding on the opposite side of the road at nighttime. Police say the incident happened near 42nd Street and 113th Avenue, shortly after 3:15 a.m. MT Monday.
In the video, the engine revs up as the SUV accelerates toward the cyclist. He's hit with the front end of the vehicle, on the driver's side.
Two people chuckle as the vehicle keeps driving.
Paramedics treated the man on scene and were bringing him to hospital as a precaution — but his condition worsened en route, police say.
He was in stable condition as of Friday afternoon.
Police also released security camera footage that is believed to show the SUV involved, but investigators have yet to confirm its make and model.
Some Beverly Heights residents told CBC News they were disturbed by the incident, especially if it was intentional.
Jason Lizot, who lives near the scene, woke up Monday morning to the intersection being blocked off with police tape, and cruisers and larger investigation vehicle parked nearby. Police were there for several hours, he said.
"I, honestly, assumed there was a death or something, because of the investigation," Lizot said.
He noticed a bicycle lying beside the curb with its wheel wrecked, he said, but didn't see an ambulance on scene at the time.

The trial of a class-action lawsuit brought by families of Jack Hulland Elementary School in Whitehorse has been postponed for potential settlement discussions. Tucker said last week that "hundreds" of former students have stepped forward as potential plaintiffs and he expects to hear from more. "Our allegation is that these practices were used routinely and repeatedly at this school over a 15-year period," Tucker said in an interview. "So, I'm not even sure that we have identified all the people who were truly impacted." Two former students and their guardians brought the lawsuit as the representative plaintiffs. "It's been a very tough process for them," Tucker said. "They want to see these practices brought to light, they want people to know what occurred, and while they know the past can't be altered — their hope is that these practices will not continue into the future." The Yukon Department of Education is named as the defendant. The government's statement of defence denies many of the allegations, including that the school had "forcible confinement policies." The Jack Hulland school council settled with families last year. The Justice department did not respond to CBC's request for comment by deadline.

11-year-old seriously injured in early morning Regina shooting
An 11-year-old girl was seriously injured in a shooting early Monday morning in Regina. Police were called to a home on the 1000 block of Edgar Street in the Eastview neighbourhood shortly after 2 a.m. CST, according to a news release. They found an 11-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound. Police say early investigation found the house was shot at multiple times from the outside. Windsor police arrest suspect in weekend string of vandalism incidents in Walkerville
Windsor police say they've arrested a suspect after someone vandalized eight parked vehicles in Windsor's Walkerville neighbourhood on Saturday, causing more than $15,000 in damage. It happened before 8 a.m., police said in a Monday post on social media. Officers responded to the 2300 block of Lincoln Road for a report of several damaged vehicles. There, they discovered eight vehicles at various addresses along the block with damage estimated at between $600 to $15,000 per vehicle. Surveillance footage showed the suspect using an object to damage the vehicles. They arrested an 56-year-old man at his residence. He has been charged with six counts of mischief under $5,000 and two counts of mischief over $5,000. Police are asking anyone with information about the incidents to contact the Windsor Police Service or Windsor and Essex County Crime Stoppers anonymously.
