Edmonton police searching for people alleged to have struck cyclist with SUV on purpose
A man is recovering in hospital after being struck by an SUV while riding his bike in the Beverly Heights neighbourhood early Monday morning, and Edmonton police believe it was intentional. Police shared a short video Friday that they believe shows the incident in question. The video was taken from inside a vehicle, and police say it was posted to social media. The video shows an "incredibly disturbing" disregard for life, and its purpose was "simply for online entertainment," said acting Staff Sgt. Richard Windover, of the Edmonton Police Service's traffic services branch, in a news release issued Friday afternoon. The footage shows the vehicle is trailing a cyclist, who is riding on the opposite side of the road at nighttime. Police say the incident happened near 42nd Street and 113th Avenue, shortly after 3:15 a.m. MT Monday. In the video, the engine revs up as the SUV accelerates toward the cyclist. He's hit with the front end of the vehicle, on the driver's side. Two people chuckle as the vehicle keeps driving. Paramedics treated the man on scene and were bringing him to hospital as a precaution — but his condition worsened en route, police say. He was in stable condition as of Friday afternoon. Police also released security camera footage that is believed to show the SUV involved, but investigators have yet to confirm its make and model. Some Beverly Heights residents told CBC News they were disturbed by the incident, especially if it was intentional. Jason Lizot, who lives near the scene, woke up Monday morning to the intersection being blocked off with police tape, and cruisers and larger investigation vehicle parked nearby. Police were there for several hours, he said. "I, honestly, assumed there was a death or something, because of the investigation," Lizot said. He noticed a bicycle lying beside the curb with its wheel wrecked, he said, but didn't see an ambulance on scene at the time.

Saskatchewan's rural roads in 2024 saw the most fatalities in 6 years: RCMP
Rural roads in Saskatchewan were especially deadly last year, according to the RCMP. In 2024, members of the Saskatchewan RCMP responded to 77 fatal crashes that left 88 people dead. Far more were left seriously injured. Throughout the year, a total of 271 collisions resulted in serious injuries – representing a 43 per cent increase from 2023. Saskatchewan RCMP say the majority of crashes last year that led to fatalities and serious injuries were caused by four main factors. They include impaired driving, dangerous driving behaviour, speeding and failing to use a seatbelt. Those most at risk of being involved in a fatal or serious crash are those aged 16 to 25, according to RCMP – adding that male drivers are more likely to be at fault in both serious and fatal crashes. Supt. Grant St. Germaine, the officer in charge of the Saskatchewan RCMP traffic services, pointed out that most collisions occur later in the day – with more than 60 per cent happening between noon and midnight. The majority of serious and fatal crashes in the province are also single vehicle incidents. As of July 31, the Saskatchewan RCMP have responded to 51 fatal crashes – resulting in 54 deaths. Marking an increase of 13 from the same point last year, nearly 40 per cent of the deaths were related to someone in the vehicle not wearing their seatbelt. 'It's unfortunate that I have to keep repeating the basic driving safety tips. But we continue to see risky driving behaviour contributing to serious collisions,' St. Germaine explained. 'Remember, always obey posted speed limits, never drive impaired by alcohol or drugs, put the phone down and always remember to wear your seatbelt – it may keep you alive.'
