Kyle Schwarber's 3 homers in all-star game's first tiebreaking swing-off lift nl over al
Schwarber was named All-Star MVP after going 0 for 2 with a walk in the game. Brent Rooker put the AL ahead by homering on his last two swings, and Kyle Stowers–subbing for Eugenio Suárez–hit one. Randy Arozarena boosted the AL lead to 3-1, and Schwarber was successful on all three tries, going down to a knee as he sent one into the Chop House seats in right. Jonathan Aranda failed on all three tries, hitting the right-field wall with his second, and the NL didn't have to use its last batter, two-time Home Run Derby champion Pete Alonso, as it won for just the second time in the last 12 All-Star Games. The AL leads 48-45 with two ties.

Raiders place dt christian wilkins on pup list as he still recovers from broken foot
The Las Vegas Raiders placed defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, who experienced a significant setback earlier this year in his recovery from a broken foot, on the physically unable to perform list Friday. That means Wilkins will miss at least the beginning of training camp, which opens Wednesday. Because he was placed on the PUP list before practices began, the Raiders can activate Wilkins at any time during camp once medically cleared. Wilkins suffered the season-ending injury in Week 5 last season. He then experienced some sort of setback in his recovery, which caused him to miss all of organized team activities and minicamp. 'It's been a difficult recovery, and he's done everything he needs to do,' coach Pete Carroll said in May. 'He's been here every day. He's here early working hard. He's not ready to get back out. We're in the midst of a long challenging process.' Wilkins, 29, was the Raiders marquee free-agent signing last year, agreeing to a four-year, 110 million contract with 82.75 million guaranteed. He was expected to bolster a defensive line led by pass rushers Maxx Crosby and Malcolm Koonce after making a career-high nine sacks in 2023 with Miami to go with his elite run-stopping ability. All three linemen, however, suffered season-ending injuries. Wilkins had two sacks and 17 tackles in five games before injuring his foot, which required surgery. He suffered a Jones fracture – a break of the bone that connects the pinkie toe to the base of the foot.

Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz's leave extended through Aug. 31 amid MLB gambling probe
Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz will remain on non-disciplinary leave through August 31 while he is the subject of a Major League Baseball gambling investigation. Ortiz's paid leave began on July 3 and was supposed to end on Friday before MLB and the MLB Players Association agreed to extend it. The team can continue to have contact with Ortiz, but he can't enter any of the Guardians facilities. The Guardians said in a statement they have been informed of the extension and will continue to fully cooperate with the investigation. The investigation is related to in-game prop bets on two pitches thrown by Ortiz that received higher activity than usual during his starts at Seattle on June 15 and his recent outing against St. Louis on June 27. The gambling activity on the pitches was flagged by a betting-integrity firm and forwarded to MLB. The 26-year-old Ortiz is in his first season with Cleveland after he was acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh last December. The right-hander is 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 16 starts this season. In four big-league seasons Ortiz is 16-22 with a 4.05 ERA and one save. Cleveland hosts the Athletics in a weekend series. The Guardians have won six of seven after a 10-game losing streak. The investigation into Ortiz comes a little more than a year after MLB suspended five players for gambling, including a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano. MLB said Marcano placed 387 baseball bets totaling more than $150,000 with a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023. Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and three minor leaguers – San Diego pitcher Jay Groome, Arizona pitcher Andrew Saalfrank, and Philadelphia infielder José Rodríguez – received one-year suspensions. Umpire Pat Hoberg was fired by Major League Baseball in February for sharing his legal sports gambling accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games and for intentionally deleting electronic messages pertinent to the leagues investigation.

Former Little League star Mo'ne Davis to try out for new women's pro baseball league
Mo'ne Davis is not done playing baseball. The former Little League phenom who at 13 became the first girl to pitch a victory–and a shutout–in the Little League World Series will be one of more than 600 players to try out for the Women's Professional Baseball League set to launch next year, the league said. Davis will join other women's baseball stars like Kelsie Whitmore, the first woman to sign a professional contract with an MLB-partnered league, at the tryouts, which will be held in Washington D.C. from Aug. 22-25. The WPBL is aiming to launch in the summer of 2026 with six teams and would be the first US pro league for women since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League–depicted in the classic film A League of Their Own –dissolved in 1954. Next month's tryouts will determine the 150 players who will be selected for the league's inaugural draft in October. Davis' rise to stardom came swiftly in 2014 when she delivered 70 mph fastballs for Philadelphia's Taney Youth Baseball Association during that year's Little League World Series. She became an instant inspiration for fans young and old. She appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, has her jersey displayed in baseball's Hall of Fame, and was named Sports Kid of the Year by Sports Illustrated Kids. Davis graduated from Hampton University in 2023 and has provided commentary on ESPN for Little League games.
