Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz's leave extended through Aug. 31 amid MLB gambling probe
The Guardians said in a statement they have been informed of the extension and will continue to fully cooperate with the investigation. The investigation is related to in-game prop bets on two pitches thrown by Ortiz that received higher activity than usual during his starts at Seattle on June 15 and his recent outing against St. Louis on June 27. The gambling activity on the pitches was flagged by a betting-integrity firm and forwarded to MLB.
The 26-year-old Ortiz is in his first season with Cleveland after he was acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh last December. The right-hander is 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 16 starts this season. In four big-league seasons Ortiz is 16-22 with a 4.05 ERA and one save. Cleveland hosts the Athletics in a weekend series. The Guardians have won six of seven after a 10-game losing streak.
The investigation into Ortiz comes a little more than a year after MLB suspended five players for gambling, including a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano. MLB said Marcano placed 387 baseball bets totaling more than $150,000 with a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023. Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and three minor leaguers – San Diego pitcher Jay Groome, Arizona pitcher Andrew Saalfrank, and Philadelphia infielder José Rodríguez – received one-year suspensions. Umpire Pat Hoberg was fired by Major League Baseball in February for sharing his legal sports gambling accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games and for intentionally deleting electronic messages pertinent to the leagues investigation.

NEW YORK (AP) — An off-duty US Customs and Border Protection officer was shot in a Manhattan park on Saturday following an apparent robbery gone wrong, New York City police and federal officials said. The 42-year-old officer was in stable condition Sunday and expected to survive. There was no indication that he was targeted because of his employment, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. The officer, who was not in uniform, had been sitting with a woman in a park beneath the George Washington Bridge when two men approached on a moped just before midnight. The passenger got off and approached the officer, who realized he was being robbed and drew his service weapon, Tisch said. The two exchanged gunfire, and the off-duty officer was shot in the face and arm. The perpetrator was injured before he and the moped driver rode off, police said. A person of interest, identified as Miguel Mora, a 21-year-old undocumented immigrant with an extensive criminal past, was taken into custody after arriving at a Bronx hospital with gunshot wounds to the groin and leg, Tisch said. It was unknown if Mora had an attorney. The police commissioner said Mora's injuries were consistent with what was seen on surveillance video of the shooting shared by the Department of Homeland Security. The search for his alleged accomplice continued Sunday. Mora entered the country illegally through Arizona in 2023 and had two prior arrests for domestic violence in New York. He was wanted in New York to face accusations of robbery and felony assault and in Massachusetts over a stolen weapons case, Tisch said. In a social media post Sunday afternoon, President Donald Trump seized on the shooting as evidence of Democrats' failures to secure the border. 'The CBP Officer bravely fought off his attacker despite his wounds, demonstrating enormous Skill and Courage,' Trump added. The shooting comes as federal officials warn of a surge of attacks on agents carrying out Trump's mass deportation agenda. As enforcement efforts have ramped up in recent months, many officers have chosen to cover their faces with the goal of avoiding harassment in public and online. On Sunday, the acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Todd Lyons, said he would allow agents to continue covering their faces as a safety measure. 'If that's a tool that the men and women of ICE that keeps themselves and their families safe, then I will allow it,' Lyons said.

DOVER, Del. – Denny Hamlin went back-to-back at Dover Motor Speedway, holding a late lead through a rain delay and an overtime finish Sunday for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver's series-best fourth victory of the season. Hamlin won in the No. 11 Toyota for the second straight time at Dover to add to wins this season at Martinsville, Darlington, and Michigan. Hamlin has 58 NASCAR Cup Series victories, leaving him two short of Kevin Harvick for 10th on the career list. Dodgers' Freddie Freeman day to day after being hit on the wrist by a pitch
Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman left Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers after being hit by a pitch on his left wrist in the sixth inning. Manager Dave Roberts said Freeman is day to day with a left wrist contusion. 'I held my breath,' Roberts said. 'I think we all did because you know when you're scuffling and to potentially lose a guy for four to six weeks is obviously very scary. But you know, exhale, sigh of relief after hearing that it (the X-ray) was negative.' Brewers left-hander Jose Quintana threw an 88 mph sinker that ran inside and hit Freeman in the wrist as he attempted to hold up a partial swing. Freeman immediately walked toward the dugout, stopped briefly to speak with Roberts and a team trainer, and proceeded down the dugout steps and into the tunnel. Freeman broke his left wrist in 2017 after being hit by a pitch with the Atlanta Braves. 'He just doesn't come out of games,' Roberts said. 'And so I didn't know why he was walking toward me. Then hearing him saying that it was his wrist and can't continue, yeah (I was) really worried.' Roberts said the team will follow up with Freeman on Monday before determining when he will play again. Hyeseong Kim replaced Freeman as a pinch-runner, and Miguel Rojas took over at first base the following inning.
