Two Longhorns land on land on Jim Thorpe Award watch list
It marks the first time either Longhorn has earned a spot on the Thorpe Award watch list. Last year, Jahdae Barron took home the honors, becoming the third player in program history to do so. He joined a special group that includes Michael Huff and Aaron Ross.
While Taaffe and Muhammad are in unfamiliar territory, they have a good shot at making history. Last season, Muhammad set career highs in tackles with 36 and pass deflections with eight. The Texas native also recorded one tackle for a loss. In his second season on the Forty Acres, Muhammad saw an increase in playing time, and he made the most of his opportunities.
As Muhammad shined, he got help from Taaffe, who has become a staple for the Longhorns. The former walk-on finished second on the team with total tackles with 78 and interceptions with two. He was also the only Longhorn to record an interception and a forced fumble in the same game last season. As Taaffe put together a career year, life was difficult for quarterbacks whenever they played Texas.
In three months, the watch list will be cut down to semifinalists on Oct. 28. Nearly a month later, the finalists will be released on Nov. 25. Both Taaffe and Muhammad are hoping to find their names on that list. After that, the players still in the mix will not have to wait long to find out the winner, which will be announced on Dec.12.
If Taaffe and Muhammad can build on their play from last year, then the Longhorns may have a reason to celebrate their star defensive backs in December.

'Freak' Longhorns freshman already looks like an NFL Player
Before this week, Texas Longhorns freshman Justus Terry was best known for being a longtime Georgia lean than took a bigger NIL package to play for Texas. The five-star defensive tackle made 247Sports' 2025 Freaks List, showcasing his exceptional athleticism and versatility. Terry has shown up to camp ripped. Listed at 6-foot-5, 268 pounds, he easily looks like he's gained 15 pounds of muscle. Terry has a frame that should accommodate more muscle as he builds his body further. Michael Taaffe earns spot on Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watch list
Over the last week, Longhorns star Michael Taaffe has been busy making headlines. That continued on Thursday when the Texas native earned a spot on the 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watch list. The award is given annually to the player who exemplifies community service, academic excellence, and athletic achievement. This marks the first time that the Westlake High School product has been linked to the award. Sam Echo was the latest Longhorns player to take home the honors in 2010. While Taaffe has shined on the field, he has also given back to the community. During his college career, Taaffe established Taaffe's Tackles for Fentanyl Awareness. The organization raises awareness about Fentanyl addiction. His work does not stop there, as the talented defensive back has partnered with Crime Stoppers of Houston's Million for Million Campaign that also raises awareness about fentanyl. When Taaffe isn't giving back to the community, he makes life hard for offensive coordinators. He finished the 2024 campaign with 78 tackles and two interceptions. The former walk-on started all 16 games and was stellar in the College Football Playoffs when needed the most. Against Arizona State in the Quarterfinals, Taaffe recorded a career-high ten tackles and two pass breakups. For Longhorns fans, Taaffe's latest honor comes as no surprise. He has been one of the program's best players and also helped those in need. This week, his name also appeared on the Jim Thorpe Award watch list. While his goal is to bring a national title to Austin, he is in the running for additional hardware. The winner of the 2025 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy will be selected by a national voting committee, with input from a fan vote. On December 12th, the winner will be revealed at the Home Depot College Football Awards show. Taaffe is hoping he will hear his name called alongside some of the best players in the nation.
