ESPN predicts Auburn vs. Alabama State winner in NCAA Tournament first round
The regular season and SEC Tournament are now in the rear-view mirror for the Auburn Tigers. The new season begins on Thursday with the first round of the Men's NCAA Tournament when Auburn plays the Alabama State Hornets in Lexington, Kentucky as part of the south region. Alabama State defeated St. Francis (PA) 70-68. Amarr Knox made a layup with one second remaining to give the Hornets the win.
The ESPN Matchup Predictor has the Tigers with a 99% chance of winning the game and advancing to a second-round game to play either Louisville or Creighton. Auburn defeated Alabama State last season 82-62 in an early season game at Neville Arena.
'We played them last year, and they had a pretty good team. So we can't take nobody for granted', Chad Baker Mazara said when speaking to the media on Wednesday.
Auburn forward Johni Broome said that the team quickly got to work on preparation for the Hornets following Tuesday's First Four game.
'We did watch them live last night. It was in the team room watching the game. Crazy ending.' Broome said, 'And after that we kinda started scouting them, watching film on them and getting prepared on how we want to guard them and their tendencies.'
Last season Broome had 16 points and 13 rebounds against the Hornets.
BetMGM has the Tigers as a 32.5-point favorite in the game. Auburn needs to get the momentum back they had before losing three of the last four games. They should win the game, but how they look doing it will be the story. The game can be seen on CBS with a tip-off time of approximately 1:50 p.m. CT.

Key Alabama football starter injured. Kalen DeBoer provides latest update on lead tailback
With less than two weeks until the season opener at Florida State on Aug. 30, Alabama football will be without a key starter for an indefinite amount of time. Early Sunday, coach Kalen DeBoer confirmed a report from Will Miller of Sports Illustrated that starting tailback Jam Miller had sustained an upper-body injury during the second scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday. "Jam Miller suffered an upper-body injury in Saturday's scrimmage and went in for a procedure on Saturday evening," DeBoer said in a press release. "Jam should recover fully with a timetable for his return yet to be determined." Sports Illustrated's Miller reported late Saturday that the Crimson Tide running back was expected to miss multiple games, including the season opener at Florida State (2:30 p.m. CT, ABC). Miller is Alabama's most experienced running back and was its leading rusher out of the backfield a season ago. The senior from Tyler, Texas, ran for 668 yards and seven touchdowns on 145 carries in 2024. In three years at Alabama, he's rushed for 1,092 yards on 219 carries. Miller had two touchdown runs in Alabama's 34-0 win over Missouri on Oct. 26, and a season-high 140 yards on 15 carries in the Week 2 win over South Florida on Sept. 7. His conference-high in yardage -- 84 yards, 28 carries -- came in Alabama's 28-14 win over Auburn, its fifth straight in the series. Miller also caught 16 passes for 155 yards last season, including a 16-yard catch and run in the first quarter of Alabama's 41-34 victory over Georgia on Sept. 28. With Miller sidelined, Alabama can look to sophomore Richard Young, a former four-star recruit from Florida who's been with the program since 2023. Young had 27 carries for 146 yards (5.4 AVG) and two touchdowns a season ago. The Crimson Tide also have sophomore Daniel Hill, who saw action in six games and went for 61 yards on 21 carries in 2024. Louisiana transfer Dre Washington is another option. Auburn basketball 2026 targets Caleb Holt and Anthony Thompson in ESPN top 25 ranking
There is a time for Auburn basketball that it was a dream to have a top 25 prospect want to come to their school. Now it is the expectation. A decade into his tenure as Auburn head coach, it is still astonishing at what Bruce Pearl has turned the basketball program into. Two players the Tigers are interested in adding to the program in 2026 are five-star Caleb Holt and Anthony Thompson. Recently, Paul Biancardi of ESPN ranked the top 25 high school basketball players. His ranking is not just limited to the 2026 recruiting class but all of high school basketball. Holt is the highest-ranking Auburn target on the list. The small forward is ranked No. 6. According to Biancardi, Holt uses speed and quickness on both sides of the court. He is a more skilled defensive player but is improving on offense. Holt is rated as the top player in Florida and the No. 6 player nationally according to 247Sports. Thompson, another small forward, comes in at No. 17 in the ranking. ESPN projects him at No. 13 in their 2026 ESPN 100 ranking. Thompson is ranked at No. 10 by 247Sports and the No. 1 player in Ohio. His height is 6-8 but his wingspan is much longer. With his shooting ability from the three-point line he could draw comparisons to Jabari Smith. Auburn earns bowl nod in ESPN's preseason projections
After missing out on bowl season last year, the Auburn Tigers are poised to make another run at postseason play. What is a realistic expectation for the Tigers postseason fate? ESPN experts Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach expect Auburn to meet up with an ACC team at season's end, but in two different destinations. Bonagura and Schlabach project the Tigers to face Boston College in postseason play, however, Bonagura has the Tigers and Eagles facing off in the Gasparilla Bowl on Friday, Dec. 19 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, while Schlabach forecasts Auburn facing Boston College closer to home in the Birmingham Bowl on Monday, Dec. 29. If this forecasted matchup were to take place, it would be a game against teams that are projected to barely cross the threshold into bowl eligibility. According to ESPN's Football Power Index, Auburn is projected to win 6.9 games while Boston College sits at 5.9. However, the two teams are on opposite paths in terms of postseason forecasts. Auburn has an 83.6% chance to win six games while Boston College has a 58.7% chance. For playoff consideration, Auburn has a 12% chance while Boston College has a less than 1% chance. Auburn football has lost seven games in each of the last four seasons, but the program is even more starved for a bowl win. The last bowl win the Tigers earned was in the 2018 season when Auburn boat raced Purdue in the Music City Bowl, 63-14. Since then, Auburn has lost four-straight postseason games, including its most recent game against Maryland in the 2023 Music City Bowl. The SEC is projected to be well represented in postseason play. ESPN's FPI gives 13 of 16 SEC teams at least 60% odds to reach the six wins needed to earn bowl eligibility, nine teams have 30% or greater odds to make the College Football Playoff, and three teams have at least an 11% chance to win the College Football National Championship.
