Did Alabama State make 'One Shining Moment' video?
Alabama State represented the HBCU experience well in this year's NCAA Tournament. A miraculous full-court play in the waning seconds gave the Hornets their first-ever win in the 'Big Dance' with a 70-68 victory over Saint Francis (PA) in the NCAA First Four. TJ Madlock was fouled with 12.4 seconds left and missed the front end of a one-and-one that could have broken the 68-68 tie. However, Saint Francis turned the ball over on the ensuing possession giving Alabama State the ball back with 3.4 seconds remaining. Alabama State threw the ball the length of the court for a wild play that ended up with the ball being tipped to Amarr Knox, who made the game-winning layup with 1 second remaining. The play was one of many dramatic finishes in this year's tournament, which was won by the University of Florida on Monday night. So did the play merit a spot in the prestigious 'One Shining Moment' recap video that airs at the conclusion of the tournament? Yes it did. The play was edited down to five seconds and can be seen from the- 38-:43 second mark of the 3:02 long video. Mathematically speaking, 2.75 percent of the video featured Alabama State. So as it stands the official visual story of the 2025 NCAA Tournament can not be told without including the champions from the SWAC. You can see the video here. Knox was featured in an Alabama State jersey in the storied video but we may never see him in the SWAC or HBCU basketball again. A week after hitting the game-winning shot Knox entered the transfer portal. The latest check of his social media accounts doesn't have any information about Knox committing to a new school. He can return to Alabama State if he chooses but the expectation in today's basketball culture is that he will not. But for One Shining Moment, Amarr Knox and the Alabama State Hornets left us with one final reminder of 2025 that an HBCU can create its own magic in the Madness of March. March Madness 2025: St. Francis (PA) announces it's dropping from Division I to Division III a week after First Four loss
The 2025 men's NCAA tournament might have been the last for St. Francis (PA). The school announced Tuesday that it would be dropping from Division I all the way to Division III after the 2025-26 college sports seasons. The announcement comes a week after the school nearly beat Alabama State in the First Four. The Hornets won 70-68 after a late layup by Amarr Knox after a full-court pass. St. Francis had tied the game with 40 seconds to go on a 3-pointer by Chris Moncrief. In the school's announcement about dropping down, it cited the current college sports landscape. "This was not an easy nor a quick decision for the Board of Trustees," school chairman Rev. Joseph Lehman said in a statement. "The governance associated with intercollegiate athletics has always been complicated and is only growing in complexity based on realities like the transfer portal, pay-for-play, and other shifts that move athletics away from love of the game. For that reason, as a Board, we aim to best provide resources and support to our student-athletes in this changing environment that aligns with our mission, Catholic institution, and our community's expectations." The Red Flash made the NCAA tournament after winning the NEC conference tournament. The team finished the season at 16-18, but entered the NCAA tournament on a six-game win streak after winning its final three regular-season games. It was just the second tournament appearance in school history. The Red Flash made their first men's March Madness appearance in 1991 as a No. 15 seed and lost 93-80 to Arizona. Because of the move to Division III, students who are on an athletics scholarship are eligible to keep their scholarships through the 2027-28 seasons. Schools at the Division III level do not offer athletic scholarships, however athletes are eligible for other non-sports financial aid agreements.

Auburn forward Johni Broome said that the team quickly got to work on preparation for the Hornets following Tuesday's First Four game. 'We did watch them live last night. It was in the team room watching the game. Crazy ending.' Broome said, 'And after that we kinda started scouting them, watching film on them and getting prepared on how we want to guard them and their tendencies.' Last season Broome had 16 points and 13 rebounds against the Hornets. BetMGM has the Tigers as a 32.5-point favorite in the game. Auburn needs to get the momentum back they had before losing three of the last four games. They should win the game, but how they look doing it will be the story. March Madness starts with a bang: Alabama State earns thrilling win and North Carolina has dominant performance
Alabama State kicked off the 2025 edition of March Madness with a thrilling 70-68 win over Saint Francis (PA) in the First Four of the men's basketball tournament Tuesday night in Dayton, Ohio. With the game tied at 68-68 and 3.4 seconds remaining in regulation, Alabama State junior guard Micah Simpson threw a long full-court inbound pass from under St. Francis' basket that would eventually end up in the hands of sophomore guard Amarr Knox, who made the go-ahead layup with 0.7 seconds left at the UD Arena. It was the Hornets first-ever tournament victory. 'We wanted to throw the ball long, and we put our tallest athletic person to go get the ball. And fortunately, everybody tipped the ball, and it landed to me, and I got the rebound and made the lay-up,' Knox told reporters. 'Couldn't have done it without my whole team. We instituted a play that we practice on all day in practice, our game plan, and it worked.' Senior guard TJ Madlock added: 'At the end of the day, it's about who wants it, and I know he obviously showed he wanted it a little bit more tonight.' HISTORY FOR THE HORNETS! 🐝#MarchMadness @BamaStateSports The No. 16 seeded Hornets will next face the tournament's No. 1 overall seed in the 68-team field, the University of Auburn Tigers, on Thursday in Lexington, Kentucky, in the round of 64. Alabama State head coach Tony Madlock said he doesn't know how long the Hornets can savor the win before realizing Auburn is next. But the team will definitely enjoy the victory Tuesday night. 'We're going to have this bus ride, I guess a couple hours down the road to play in Lexington at Rupp Arena. 'How can you beat that?,' he said. ''How can you beat that for a school in the SWAC that has a lot of great tradition for us to go play at Rupp Arena?' Nothing like it. We can't wait.' The North Carolina Tar Heels silenced critics who believed the school shouldn't have made the Big Dance based on a lackluster resume — for at least one night. North Carolina overpowered the San Diego State Aztecs 95-68 in Dayton, Ohio. The No. 11 seeded Tar Heels will next play No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels on Friday in Milwaukee. UNC senior guard RJ Davis led the way with 26 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including 6-for-6 from three-point range. North Carolina shot 52.6 percent from the field, 58.3 from three and 87.5 from the free throw line. The Tar Heels led by as many as 40 points. HEELS WIN.#CarolinaFamily | @WellsFargo After the convincing victory, the Tar Heels were asked if they sent an unmistakable message about the school deserving to be in the tournament. 'We know we deserve to be here. We're not looking to send a message to anybody else,' Tar Heels junior guard Seth Trimble said in the postgame news conference. 'We're just looking to compete as a team and be the team that we know that we are capable of being and I think we did that tonight. 'We're going to do that when we get to Milwaukee and go from there. We hear what people say. We don't really care about it. It is what it is. We're focused on us.' Davis added: 'One thing about us, yes, we hear the noise but we don't really pay any attention to it. We stay within ourselves. … We're just focused on what we have to do, not really paying too much attention to what's being said about us and whatnot. Just our preparation leading up to the games.' North Carolina earned its first First Four win in school history. The Tar Heels all-time tournament record is 134-50. This story has been updated with additional information.
