March Madness starts with a bang: Alabama State earns thrilling win and North Carolina has dominant performance

CNN20-03-2025
Alabama State kicked off the 2025 edition of March Madness with a thrilling 70-68 win over Saint Francis (PA) in the First Four of the men's basketball tournament Tuesday night in Dayton, Ohio.
With the game tied at 68-68 and 3.4 seconds remaining in regulation, Alabama State junior guard Micah Simpson threw a long full-court inbound pass from under St. Francis' basket that would eventually end up in the hands of sophomore guard Amarr Knox, who made the go-ahead layup with 0.7 seconds left at the UD Arena.
It was the Hornets first-ever tournament victory.
'We wanted to throw the ball long, and we put our tallest athletic person to go get the ball. And fortunately, everybody tipped the ball, and it landed to me, and I got the rebound and made the lay-up,' Knox told reporters. 'Couldn't have done it without my whole team. We instituted a play that we practice on all day in practice, our game plan, and it worked.'
Senior guard TJ Madlock added: 'At the end of the day, it's about who wants it, and I know he obviously showed he wanted it a little bit more tonight.'
HISTORY FOR THE HORNETS! 🐝#MarchMadness @BamaStateSports pic.twitter.com/AD50CJ0S5p The No. 16 seeded Hornets will next face the tournament's No. 1 overall seed in the 68-team field, the University of Auburn Tigers, on Thursday in Lexington, Kentucky, in the round of 64.
Alabama State head coach Tony Madlock said he doesn't know how long the Hornets can savor the win before realizing Auburn is next. But the team will definitely enjoy the victory Tuesday night.
'We're going to have this bus ride, I guess a couple hours down the road to play in Lexington at Rupp Arena. 'How can you beat that?,' he said. ''How can you beat that for a school in the SWAC that has a lot of great tradition for us to go play at Rupp Arena?' Nothing like it. We can't wait.'
The North Carolina Tar Heels silenced critics who believed the school shouldn't have made the Big Dance based on a lackluster resume — for at least one night.
North Carolina overpowered the San Diego State Aztecs 95-68 in Dayton, Ohio. The No. 11 seeded Tar Heels will next play No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels on Friday in Milwaukee.
UNC senior guard RJ Davis led the way with 26 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including 6-for-6 from three-point range. North Carolina shot 52.6 percent from the field, 58.3 from three and 87.5 from the free throw line. The Tar Heels led by as many as 40 points.

'We know we deserve to be here. We're not looking to send a message to anybody else,' Tar Heels junior guard Seth Trimble said in the postgame news conference. 'We're just looking to compete as a team and be the team that we know that we are capable of being and I think we did that tonight.
'We're going to do that when we get to Milwaukee and go from there. We hear what people say. We don't really care about it. It is what it is. We're focused on us.'
Davis added: 'One thing about us, yes, we hear the noise but we don't really pay any attention to it. We stay within ourselves. … We're just focused on what we have to do, not really paying too much attention to what's being said about us and whatnot. Just our preparation leading up to the games.'
North Carolina earned its first First Four win in school history. The Tar Heels all-time tournament record is 134-50.

Get to Know Your Orange Man: #55, OL Zach Rice

It's time to start preparing for the 2025 Syracuse Orange football season. We're going through the roster to take a look at each Syracuse player as we get to know a lot of new faces for Year 2 of the Fran Brown Era. Up next is… Name: Zach Rice Position: Offensive Line Year: Redshirt Junior Height: 6'5' Weight: 320 lbs. Hometown: Lynchburg, VA High School/Previous College: Liberty Christian Academy/North Carolina 2024 stats: Appeared in all 12 games for the Tar Heels with most of his snaps on special teams. Saw limited action at guard the last two seasons in Chapel Hill 2025 projections: Rice should be competing for a spot on the Orange offensive line. If he's not starting, he should be a backup this fall and will likely be in on kick protection units. While he didn't live up to his recruiting hype at UNC, perhaps a fresh start will unlock that potential. How'd he get here?: Committed to Syracuse in late Aprils after deciding to leave UNC. What'd recruiting sites say?: Three stars from the major recruiting sites as a transfer, but going back to his high school days, Rice was a 5-star and top tackle in the 2022 class. He had offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Georgia among others. Instagram: Winners Get Washed: Graphite by Bath and Body Works for a lineman that Syracuse needs to form a wall around the pocket. Interesting nugget o'interest: Rice's 247 composite ranking of 0.9937 is the highest rating for any Syracuse player since the ratings began, besting Cecil Howard's 0.9920 Let's get a look at ya: Hudl highlights View Link

North Carolina coach Bill Belichick won't appear on weekly coach's radio show

The vast majority of college football coaches carve out a little time during each week of the season for a radio show. Bill Belichick is not among the vast majority of college football coaches. Via Reuters, North Carolina explained in a release on Friday that the program, previously known as Mack Brown Live, will be named Carolina Football Live going forward. Also, Belichick will appear on the first episode only, before the first game of the season. The development comes a year after Belichick was overexposed in the media, from radio appearances to podcast appearances to TV appearances. He seemingly didn't say no to any payday that was offered to him. Now, he'll revert to saying as little as possible. Appearing instead, to little surprise, will be Michael Lombardi, Belichick's consigliere. Lombardi will be the one either to loudly boast in the aftermath of a win, or to aggressively make plausible excuses if/when the Tar Heels end up in quicksand. Belichick's contract doesn't require weekly involvement in the show. Instead, he must make appearances 'as reasonably requested by the University.' It's arguably reasonable for North Carolina to expect Belichick to do what nearly every other major college football coach does. Given, however, that Belichick can now write a check for $1 million and walk away whenever he wants, the folks at UNC know they'd be wise to let their heels stick to the tar when it comes to pushing Belichick, on anything.

UNC football lands top 100 recruit in 2026 class

Bill Belichick lands another big recruit Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels continue to prep for the 2025 season with kickoff against TCU just under three weeks away. While this is the first year under Belichick, the program will really start to feel his impact in terms of recruiting in the 2026 class. And the Tar Heels just added another big piece to that 2026 class. On Friday, the Tar Heels secured a commitment from top 100 player C.J. Sadler as he ended his recruitment and picked North Carolina. The four-star athlete picked the Tar Heels over his other finalists, Colorado, Maryland, and Michigan. The Michigan native is the top recruit in the state and a top 100 player overall, giving UNC their second-highest-rated recruit in the Belichick era behind only quarterback Travis Burgess. With Sadler being listed as an athlete, the plan is for him to play defensive back, wide receiver and be a return man for the Tar Heels per 247Sports. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Sadler is ranked No. 85 nationally, the No. 8 athlete, and No. 1 player in the state of Michigan per the 247Sports rankings. With his commitment, UNC now has the No. 17 overall class for the 2026 cycle.
