Thousands of residents lose power in Happy Valley-Goose Bay outage
"For safety, the transmission line to [Happy Valley-Goose Bay] was de-energized to investigate," she wrote in a statement to CBC News on Saturday.
Pitcher said a gas turbine is being brought online to serve customers until power is restored but that the timeline for restoration is currently unknown.
According to outage updates on N.L. Hydro's website, crews are on-site and determining the next steps for repairs.
The update said an unplanned emergency outage began at about 1 p.m. due to arcing and a possible fire at a terminal station.
All customers in Happy Valley-Goose Bay are affected by the outage, N.L. Hydro said.
Another update said the arcing occurred on one phase of a gang-operated switch on one of the transmission lines.
"[The Energy Control Centre] is also working to start the gas turbine to support as much of [Labrador East's] load as possible," N.L. Hydro said in the update.
N.L. Hydro also wrote in a social media post that "we are investigating the issue and will provide more information as it is known. We apologize for the inconvenience today."
Perry Trimper, the MHA for Lake Melville, said in a social media post that he has learned of arcing and a possible fire on the main power line between Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Muskrat Falls.
"NL Hydro is now proceeding with activating the gas turbine. A crew to do this is being mobilized," he wrote in his post.
Trimper told CBC News he estimates it could take a few hours to restore power.
Happy Valley-Goose Bay Mayor George Andrews said the weather has been very hot over the past couple of days, and there is currently a fire ban.
Andrews said if the power outage continues, there will be conversations about establishing a cooling centre. However, he said that there are very few places that would have power. They include the Co-op store, which has a generator, and the hospital.

Stormy weather results in thousands of power outages in Metro Detroit
Thousands of Southeast Michigan residents remained without power Wednesday morning in the aftermath of winds and rain that hit across the region Tuesday. DTE Energy, whose service area includes most of the Metro Detroit area, listed about 6,000 customers without power at 6 a.m. on its outage map. That's an improvement from about 10 p.m. Tuesday, when as many as 15,000 DTE customers were affected. On a county-by-county basis, the site showed that Oakland, Macomb and Genesee counties were the areas most affected by outages. Consumers Energy, whose service area includes parts of Monroe and Lenawee counties, did not have show any lingering power outages on its map Wednesday morning for those communities.

Typhoon Podul Heads Toward China After Lashing Taiwan
One person was missing, dozens were injured and tens of thousands of households were without power after Typhoon Podul battered eastern and southern Taiwan on Wednesday. The storm made landfall in Taitung, an eastern county, in the early afternoon with a maximum wind speed of 96 miles per hour, equal to that of a Category 2 hurricane, but then weakened after hitting the island's central mountains, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Administration. The eye of the storm had crossed Taiwan by late afternoon and was churning toward the southeast coast of mainland China, it said. The storm is expected to make landfall on China's eastern seaboard Wednesday night or early Thursday local time, according to the China Meteorological Administration. More than 7,000 people were evacuated in southern and eastern Taiwan as the storm approached. In Chiayi, a southern county in Taiwan, a 28-year-old man surnamed Lin was missing after waves swept him away while he was fishing during the typhoon, according to the National Fire Agency of Taiwan. In addition, at least 33 people suffered storm-related injuries, the Taiwanese government said. By late afternoon, power had been restored to about 80,000 of the more than 130,000 households that had experienced outages,according to Taipower, the island's main utility company. More than 200 instances of storm-related damage were reported, according to the fire agency. The typhoon lashed the island with heavy rains and powerful winds that prompted the closing of schools and businesses in nearly a dozen cities and counties. More than 400 flights were canceled on Wednesday because of the weather, and service on dozens of shipping routes was suspended, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications of Taiwan. Typhoons frequently strike Taiwan and the Philippines during the summer. In July, Typhoon Danas caused two deaths, injured more than 700 people and caused over $15 million in agricultural losses in Taiwan. The government, under President Lai Ching-te, has been criticized for its response, with residents and opposition politicians accusing officials of reacting too slowly to the disaster.
