Internet users at risk: Watch your click as crooks eye trends

Kochi: Putting internet users in the city at high risk, cybercriminals are using new tricks to spread APK files and hidden links through messaging apps. This revelation comes after city police busted a major racket that used fake m-Parivahan apps to commit fraud. Investigators said they recovered several similar applications from those arrested, indicating they were conducting multiple such scams. The cyber wing of city police was the first to make an arrest in the m-Parivahan fraud, despite hundreds of complaints being registered in various states where APK files disguised as the official app were being circulated through messaging platforms like WhatsApp. Phones of those who installed the apps were hacked, leading to severe monetary loss. "When we arrested them, we found an array of such APK files. One of them was for installing an app to engage in sex chats, which could then be used for extortion through honey-trapping. Very few victims would file complaints in such cases fearing shame. Another APK file was for bogus KYC updation," said an officer with the cyber wing. City police commissioner Putta Vimaladitya said scamsters were changing tactics depending on what was trending at the time and users must be extremely careful. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "For instance, as time for filing income tax returns approaches, they create an APK file for an app to file I-T returns or to calculate your income tax amount. The moment someone downloads, data gets stolen. Sometimes they take control of the screen, while sometimes only messages. Many aim to take control of applications on the phone," he said. Fresh complaints in m-Parivahan style are becoming fewer while they are coming up with newer things, he added. Another city police officer said there was a surge in bogus links last week over Independence Day. "Since many e-commerce platforms provide offers during this period, scamsters took advantage. Links were sent with similar offers, luring people into sharing their personal details. Such links can be expected during Onam season. Another trend is sending links warning of private photos being online so that users are tempted to check it by clicking the attached link," said an officer. Vimaladitya said verifying such links remains the most effective safeguard against such scams. "It is very unlikely that an official body would send you important official communication through WhatsApp. Even if that happens, everything must be cross-checked — either by directly contacting the office concerned or by visiting authentic websites and writing to them for clarity. For example, If you search for a bank like Federal Bank on Google, fake website links might appear. Instead, search for the original Federal Bank URL, confirm its authenticity and then proceed. This kind of due diligence is essential before making any online transaction," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Man murdered, stuffed in adrum in Khairthal-Tijara dist

1 2 Alwar: In a chilling reminder of the infamous Meerut murder case, body of a married man aged around 35 was found stuffed in a 'blue drum' on the rooftop of his rented accommodation in Kishangarh Bas town of Khairthal-Tijara district, Sunday. The murdered man's wife, the couple's three children and the landlord's son have been missing since Saturday, police said. The gruesome discovery was made by the landlord's wife, Mithlesh, who was alerted by a foul odour emanating from the drum. The body, identified as that of Hansraj, aka Suraj, was covered in salt, allegedly to accelerate decomposition. Hansraj, originally from Khandepur village in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, had been residing in the rented accommodation at Adarsh Colony for approximately six weeks and was employed at a local brick kiln. The discovery sent shockwaves through the colony, as the case bears a striking resemblance to a previous incident in Meerut, UP, where a similar method was used to conceal the murder of a Merchant Navy officer, allegedly by his wife in Feb this year. Khairthal-Tijara SP Manish Chaudhary said, "Hansraj was murdered and his body was placed in the drum with salt. This was a premeditated murder. The deceased's wife and other individuals are being sought. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The case will be solved soon." Police have launched a full-scale investigation following the discovery. Kishangarh Bas DySP Rajendra Singh Nirwan, along with station officer Jitendra Singh Shekhawat and assistant SI Gyanchand, reached the crime scene to conduct a thorough inspection. The deceased's family in UP has been notified and the body has been transferred to the govt hospital mortuary in Kishangarh Bas. The investigation took a complex turn after Hansraj's wife, Sunita, and their three children — Harshal, Nandini, and Golu — were found missing. Additionally, landlord Rajesh's son, Jitendra, who had rented the room to Hansraj, is also missing. Jitendra, whose wife passed away 12 years ago, was known to frequently drink with Hansraj, police said. The landlord's wife said she found Sunita and her children missing when she returned from Janmashtami celebrations on Saturday. Jitendra also failed to return home that evening. The following morning, the odour led her to inspect the drum on the rooftop and to call the police control room. Dy SP Nirwan confirmed that Hansraj's throat had been slit with a sharp weapon, indicating foul play. Police are pursuing leads to uncover the motive behind the murder and locate the missing family members. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). The man had multiple stab wounds to his chest, abdomen and neck. He was rushed to a hospital in Jahangirpuri, where he was declared brought dead. A case of murder was registered, and efforts began to identify him. Deputy commissioner of police (outer north) Hareshwar V Swami said that NATGRID played a crucial role in the investigation. "Investigators uploaded the victim's photograph into the system, which generated three matching images along with associated mobile numbers. After tracking the numbers, police contacted the family, who confirmed his identity," he said. The deceased was identified as Lalit Kumar from Uttarakhand, who lived in Sarita Vihar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He worked and lived in a bakery in Shalimar Bagh. During the probe, CCTV footage from the vicinity of the crime scene showed four persons moving suspiciously in the area around the time of the crime. During interrogation, the juveniles allegedly confessed to the crime. They said that they had planned to rob Lalit. "The four asked him to hand over his belongings. When he resisted, a scuffle broke out, during which he was stabbed multiple times," a police source said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
