IND vs ENG 5th Test: Dale Steyn backs Mohammed Siraj to deliver for India, makes big prediction

Time of Indiaa day ago
Dale Steyn predicts Mohammed Siraj will claim five wickets in the crucial fifth Test against England, especially with Jasprit Bumrah likely absent. India trail 2-1 in the series, needing a win to level. While Siraj's average improves without Bumrah, maintaining his energy throughout the match remains a key challenge.
South African cricket legend
Dale Steyn
has predicted that
Mohammed Siraj
will take five wickets in the upcoming fifth Test match against England at the Oval. This comes as India's main bowler
Jasprit Bumrah
is likely to miss the crucial game.
India currently trail 2-1 in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Steyn
made his bold prediction on X, stating simply: "Siraj to take a fifer in the 5th Test." The prediction gains significance as India desperately needs a win to level the series.
Bumrah's absence comes after showing signs of fatigue in the drawn fourth Test, where his bowling speeds noticeably dropped. He had initially been scheduled to play only three matches during this England tour.

Siraj has emerged as India's most reliable Test player in recent years. He holds the record for playing the most Test matches for India in the 2020s. The team's bowling attack will likely be strengthened by Akash Deep's return from injury, while
Arshdeep Singh will make his Test debut
, as was
reported by TimesofIndia.com
.
While Siraj's overall Test average of over 30 has drawn criticism, his performance significantly improves when leading the attack without Bumrah. In 15 matches without Bumrah, Siraj maintains an impressive average of 25.20, which might explain Steyn's confidence in him.
The biggest challenge for Siraj will be maintaining his energy and intensity. He has played every match of this long tour, and India need him at his best to achieve their goal of levelling the series 2-2 at the Oval.

'It's quite a complex issue': India's Ten Doeschate defends resting Bumrah, Gill run out in Oval Test

Why was Jasprit Bumrah not played in the Oval Test vs England? India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate spills the beans as he defends Shubman Gill's run out on Day 1. read more Jasprit Bumrah missing a Test match with a green pitch did not go down well with a few fans. Image: Reuters Indian management has defended its decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the final Test against England, which began on Thursday at the Oval. Just two days before the must-win match in London, Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had informed the media that Bumrah was fit to play in the final match, but the 31-year-old pacer was not included . Even India captain Shubman Gill had indicated on the eve of the match that Bumrah was in contention. But as per reports, the management decided with the player and the selectors that it was important to priortise Bumrah's long-term fitness rather than risking him for short-term gains, leading to him sitting out the Oval Test. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India camp defends Bumrah decision, Gill run-out After the opening day's play in the final Test, India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate defended the decision to rest Bumrah at the ground with a green top and amid overcast conditions. 'It's quite a complex issue. We want to wheel him out but we also want to respect where his body's at,' Ten Doeschate said. 'He's bowled a large number of overs. He did say coming into the tour he could only play three games and we felt it was right to honour that call. 'Our thinking was the Oval's normally a fairly good wicket for batting on, so we thought we'd roll the dice in Manchester. With hindsight we'd love to have him here. Maybe England have got it spot on, leaving the best bowling wicket for the last Test after he's played three. For a tour of England, you'd expect conditions closer to this than what we've seen in the first four Tests,' he said. England ended Day 1 on 204/6 after Gill suffered an unfortunate run-out following a miscalculation on his part. 'He's in the touch of his life. Again today he made batting look really easy,' Ten Doeschate said. 'But these mistakes do happen, and that's a misjudgement of a run. Given what he's done in the first four Tests we'll let him get away with that one.'

'England ke paas bowling nahi hai': Gavaskar goes nuclear with ruthless Oval pitch jab during India vs England 5th Test

On a pitch tailor-made for seamers and under persistent grey skies, India finished a stop-start opening day at 204/6 in the series-deciding fifth Test against England at The Oval. Karun Nair, brought back into the XI after being dropped for the fourth Test, stood firm with an unbeaten 52 on a day when the ball did plenty and wickets fell regularly. The rain intervened twice, limiting play to 64 overs, but the underlying talking point remained the nature of the surface, and Sunil Gavaskar didn't hold back. Sunil Gavaskar didn't mince his words as he spoke about the surface at The Oval(AP/X) During a chat on Sony Sports Network, Gavaskar appeared to take a jab at the England bowling lineup as he talked about the pitch. The side is playing without Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse – who led the pace attack in the third and fourth Test. Stokes is the highest wicket-taker in the series so far, while Archer and Carse have also chipped in with regular wickets. '(Unke paas koi bowling bhi hai nahi, isliye aisi pitch banaayi) They don't have a quality bowling attack, that's why they made a pitch like this,' Gavaskar said on-air, offering a pointed remark about the hosts. 'Stokes had taken wickets, Archer took wickets, Carse took wickets. If they aren't playing, who else will take wickets? That's the reason they made a pitch like this so that Tongue and others can get some help.' Indeed, the green-tinged surface at The Oval offered significant seam movement throughout the day, especially under overcast conditions. While Gus Atkinson impressed on debut with a couple of key wickets, his fellow seamers, Josh Tongue and Jamie Overton, were erratic for large periods despite the help on offer. Chris Woakes, who had played all five Tests, injured his shoulder while fielding and walked off the ground, his availability in doubt for the remainder of the game. Nair leads India's battle India's innings was anchored by Nair, who capitalised on the opportunity with a gritty half-century; his first fifty-plus score since returning to Test cricket after eight years earlier in the series. He found a steady partner in Washington Sundar (19*), as the duo added an unbroken 45-run stand for the seventh wicket to bring some stability. Earlier, India lost both openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, cheaply. Rahul, one of India's most consistent batters this series, chopped onto his stumps trying to cut a ball too close to his body. Captain Shubman Gill looked in good touch before running himself out for 21 in bizarre fashion, attempting a risky single to mid-off where Atkinson hit the stumps direct. Despite the setbacks, Gill managed to surpass Sunil Gavaskar's record for most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series – his tally now at 733. Sai Sudharsan, looking composed for much of his 108-ball stay, eventually fell to a classic seaming delivery from Tongue, who also removed Jadeja in similar fashion later in the session.

India Coach Taunts England On Bumrah's Absence: 'Left Best Bowling Wicket For...'

Last Updated: India men's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate humorously criticized England for saving the best bowling wicket for the fifth Test after Jasprit Bumrah had played his three games. India men's assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, took a light-hearted dig at England for leaving the 'best bowling wicket' for the fifth Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, only after Jasprit Bumrah had played his quota of three games. He said the hosts have got it 'spot on' against India's tactics. Bumrah declared that he'd play only three Tests in the series before it even began. He featured in the first, third, and fourth games and was rested in the second, the only Test India have won so far. Ten Doeschate described the situation as solving a puzzle, where they need to put India's need to have their best bowler to win matches against the risk of inflicting a long-term injury, like after the tour of Australia. 'Every time I've answered this question I've spoken about like putting the pieces of the puzzles together and guys were baffled when we didn't play him in the third Test, and our thinking yeah was that the Oval, yes it's got bounce but it's normally a fairly good wicket for batting on, and we thought we'd roll the dice and if we'd won the toss we would have bowled," the assistant coach said in the press conference after Day 1's play at the Oval. 'In hindsight you would have loved to have him here, but you would also have said if we come here 3-1 down that we didn't use him there, so it's trying to not guess but trying to look into the future and then see how we can manage him, and maybe England have got it spot on leaving the best bowling wicket for the last Test after he's played three," he added. India were again put to bat in the Test and scored 204/6 at Stumps on the greenish track. England are themselves without their best pacers for the Test, with Ben Stokes injured and Jofra Archer rested for similar reasons to Bumrah. Chris Woakes also suffered a shoulder injury on Thursday to boot. It wasn't worth including Bumrah: Ten Doeschate Ten Doeschate also rebuffed the suggestion that Bumrah was 'picking and choosing' which matches to play, saying that India players are always disappointed when they can't play but try to motivate each other. 'He has bowled a large number of overs, I know it doesn't always seem like that because he's only played three Tests and he only bowled in one innings in Manchester. But if you look at the loads, he's bowled a lot of overs, and like he did say coming into the tour, he was going to be available for three games, and we just felt it was right to honour that call," he said. 'I don't think picking and choosing is a fair comment to Bumrah, he did say he was going to play three games, he left it up to us which three he played, we've tried to manage the situation, it's not ideal, I guess giving those guys attention, the guys who aren't playing particularly when you're carrying 18 is important," the coach added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
