Switched to Google Fi Essentials but can't change your Google One plan? You're not alone

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
TL;DR Some users have noticed that there seems to be no way to change Google One or add a billing method after switching to Google Fi Essentials from an older plan that included Google One for free.
The good news is that the problem resolves itself in about a week after Google Fi releases its connection to Google One, and it will be downgraded to a free plan once the process finishes.
You'll get an alert that Google One has expired and a grace period to renew without losing your existing stored items.
If you recently switched to the new Google Fi Essentials plan, you probably already knew that Google One would no longer be included. For many users, the savings are worth losing the feature, but what if you want to keep Google One and pay for it yourself? Several users on Reddit, including Waitin4Godot, have run into this exact issue.
Unfortunately, if you switched from a plan that included Google One for free, you'll notice there's no way to upgrade, add a payment method, or change anything from the included Basic plan. Any attempts result in a 403 error. The good news? This isn't a real problem — it's just part of the switch-over process.
While Google could have communicated this more clearly via email or text alerts, it typically takes about a week after switching to Google Fi Essentials for your account to fully downgrade and for Google One to be released. You'll eventually get an email confirming the expiration, at which point you'll be able to resubscribe immediately.
If you're worried about losing files due to being over the free storage limit, don't be. I can personally confirm that Google One offers a grace period in these cases, giving you time to renew without losing access to your data. I certainly wouldn't wait around too long, though.

Switch 2 Pre-Order Got Cancelled? You Could Get a Reward

With only days remaining until the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, major retailers have announced a wave of pre-order cancellations. However, that doesn't mean you're entirely out of luck—some buyers got credit applied to their accounts. The cancellations have affected buyers in both the US and the UK. Walmart, Target, Game, and plenty more retailers have had to cancel their customers' purchases. Walmart was one of the retailers that needed to cancel orders. When one Reddit user called the company to find out why their order had been canceled, they were told it was happening to many purchases. That same customer received a $25 credit as compensation. In other words, call the retailer and ask what they can do, ideally in a kind way—the customer service representatives already have to deal with a lot of upset people. A pre-order used to be a guarantee that you'll receive that console on the day of release. Retailers accept your money early to agree to the guarantee, and if you can argue such, you might get money. Remember that every retailer has their own rules for these agreements, and many may have wording that prevents it from being seen as a guarantee. Demand for the Switch 2 was extremely high, which likely surpassed expectations despite the difficulties many faced in securing pre-orders before the release. Game, a major UK retailer, first posted a public apology on social media, admitting that some Switch 2 pre-orders had been canceled and promising to restore as many affected orders as possible. While Game initially said they would reach out to affected customers with updates, they later removed their apology tweet. According to Eurogamer, the now-deleted post said, "We sincerely apologise for the recent cancellation of some Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders. We understand how disappointing this is, especially for those who have been eagerly awaiting their order. We're currently working hard to reinstate as many affected pre-orders as possible. If your order was impacted, please know that we're doing everything we can and will be in touch with further updates and next steps. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to resolve this. We truly appreciate your support.' Since the tweet is gone, it is likely that purchases will not be reinstated. There's just not enough product for the amount of pre-orders that went through. You should keep an eye on your own purchases because more pre-orders will likely be canceled as time goes on. The chip shortage has been long over, but it seems like limited consoles will just be normal at release. Nintendo will likely open orders again when there is stock available to buy, but keep in mind that making these takes time and shipping them could take even longer. While it is tempting to buy from scalpers, we know that more are coming, so patience is likely the smarter move. Source: Eurogamer, Los1man on Reddit

You can now search your Google Photos library for images with specific text

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google Photos now lets you search for photos with specific words in them. You can utilize this new search capability by putting your search term in quotation marks. Google Photos introduced a Gemini-powered search feature last year to help users find images in their libraries using natural language queries. Instead of relying on keywords and dates, this feature allowed users to look for photos by describing the scene or the people in them. It even helped users sort the results based on date or relevance. Google is now improving upon this feature by adding support for another search parameter that will allow users to look for specific words within photos. This new capability refines search results by looking for exact text matches in filenames, camera models, captions, or text within photos. You can use it by putting your search term in quotation marks, and Google Photos will deliver all matching results. If you don't use quotation marks, Google Photos will offer a broader range of results, including text matches and visual matches. The new search feature makes looking up screenshots and documents featuring specific words incredibly easy. In my limited testing, it worked flawlessly, delivering accurate results with exact text matches. The feature is live in the latest Google Photos release on Android and iOS, and you can also use it to search for images in Google Photos on the web. Got a tip? Talk to us!
