Kaiser Chiefs were 'glad something terrible happened' to their Glastonbury set
As the Ruby hitmakers opened the Pyramid Stage for day two of the festival (Saturday, June 27), complaints flooded social media.
It turned out the BBC had no plans to air the set, which marked the iconic band's 20th anniversary.
Lead singer Ricky Wilson saw the outcry but admitted it doesn't feel like a Kaiser Chiefs show when everything is going right.
'We're most comfortable when things are going wrong, even like when we were the Glastonbury and it was, like, my favourite show ever,' the 47-year-old musician shared.
Speaking on Radio X with Dan O'Connell, Ricky continued: 'Best day. I loved it. The crowd turned up. There was like 100,000 people in the field. Amazing.
'Then they said it wasn't on iPlayer. And I was like, 'Well, that's really rubbish.'
'I'm glad something terrible happened, because it wouldn't be the Kaiser Chiefs if it all went to plan.'
He added: 'The thing is, bands that everything goes really well, then just to suddenly disappear. But bands that go up and down have a need to fight back all the time.
'It's weird, because we're very happy being the underdogs.'
Those underdogs were marking two decades since the release of their debut album, Employment, which was the fourth best-selling album that year. https://www.instagram.com/p/DL8O1egsx_S/?img_index=1
The record produced iconic hits like Oh My God, I Predict a Riot, and Everyday I Love You Less and Less.
It was shortlisted — as Ricky said it 'came second' — for the Mercury Prize that year but the singer revealed he couldn't appreciate the success at the time.
'It was weird,' he shared. 'We knew it was going really well; you can't really compute it when you're so tired.
'And I think any new band who aren't feeling like on the verge of death with tiredness, you're not doing it properly!'
While the set did appear on iPlayer later, fans were furious it wasn't aired live and were particularly vocal about it on X at the time.
Ninety_88 questioned: 'How can you put Kaiser Chiefs on to open on a Saturday and not televise it?' More Trending
'BBC iPlayer stating they are live, when in actual fact it's 2 presenters talking and showing the acts from last night, when we have all tuned in to watch Kaiser Chiefs who are actually live on stage now! What a let down,' added melcastle1875.
The I Predict A Riot hitmakers even addressed the drama on their Instagram, writing: 'Apologies to everyone who attempted to tune in yesterday, we appreciate you wanting to join the party from home alongside the almost one hundred thousand of you who filled the field! Such a lovely crowd!'
Kaiser Chiefs' Glastonbury set has since been removed from iPlayer, along with other 2025 sets.

It sparked widespread calls for the latest series — filmed before Wallace and Torode were sacked — to be cancelled. The first three episodes were released on iPlayer on Wednesday morning, with fans noting a lack of Wallace and Torode's trademark banter with contestants. The opener was then broadcast on BBC One later that evening at 8pm. Overnight figures show a large drop in viewers. However 2024's opener was screened on a bank holiday in April, when more people are usually at home watching TV. Wallace was fired after multiple complaints were upheld, including his use of inappropriate sexual language. Torode was then also sacked after it was claimed he had used a racist term BBC bosses decided to show the latest series because the amateur chefs 'gave their heart and soul' to it. However one revealed she was edited out after she called for its cancellation. BBC botches bid to edit out sacked duo Gregg Wallace & John Torode from new Masterchef amid calls to axe scandal-hit show Broadcast union Bectu said showing the episodes could be 'triggering' for people who had complaints upheld. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy also said this week she would not be watching. Wallace, furious at his treatment, previously revealed he would not be tuning in. Asked by The Sun if he will watch it, he said: 'No, no, no, no, never. I'm hurt. "I don't want anything to do with telly. I don't want anything to do with the BBC." Blades repeats 'on ice' By Ellie Henman THE BBC is to stop showing programmes featuring rape-accused presenter Jay Blades. A source said bosses would do so 'out of respect and consideration to everyone involved'. They said repeats of The Repair Shop and any other programmes he appears in were 'on ice'. Blades, 55, is due to appear before magistrates next week charged with two rapes. He is awaiting trial on a separate charge of controlling and coercive behaviour against estranged wife Lisa-Marie Zbozen, which he denies. He stepped back from The Repair Shop, which he hosted since 2017, after his arrest last May.

MasterChef with Gregg Wallace and John Torode loses nearly 1m viewers
The latest season of MasterChef, hosted by fired presenters John Torode and Gregg Wallace, has been dealt a huge viewership blow. The first three episodes of the pre-recorded season, which the BBC ultimately decided to air despite the misconduct scandal, are available to watch on iPlayer, and new episodes are airing on BBC One at 8pm. The series, which premiered yesterday, underwent last-minute editing to focus on the amateur chefs over the recently sacked hosts – as well as cut out one of the cooks who spoke out against the series being released. Fans shared their conflicted thoughts about the new series with some believing it was the right thing to give the contestants their chance to shine despite the troubled backdrop. Many online, however, also vowed to boycott the new series which will be the final one helmed by both Wallace and Torode now they are being replaced. This decision seems to have translated to viewership as the BBC News reports just under two million people (1.96m to be exact) tuned into last night's episode. This is a significant drop from last year's premiere which saw 2.7 million viewers watch overnight – although there could be other factors at play including the differing release window and general move away from linear TV watching. Especially as the episodes are also available online already. Critics shared that the feel of this new season does feel different to episodes that have come before. The Evening Standard called it an 'absolute mess' and The Telegraph said it 'lacked pizzazz'. Although The Guardian shared that, for the most part, it seems unchanged. 'It seems the BBC and Banijay have decided essentially to ignore the problem and hope that putting out more or less the same show as ever will suffice,' the review wrote. Wallace – against whom 45 out of 83 allegations were substantiated in the Silkins review including a case of 'unwanted physical contact – was suspended during the filming of this season with Irish chef Anna Haugh stepping in for the final episode. More Trending The 60-year-old TV personality was officially removed from the show last month with his co-host following after him after a racial language accusation was upheld against him. There is no word on whether the BBC plans to release the Torode Celebrity MasterChef season with Grace Dent or the two festival specials he is set to feature in will still be released. The BBC is also yet to officially announce who will replace the pair, although it is believed to be Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt and Great British Menu's Andi Oliver. MasterChef airs tomorrow night at 8:30pm on BBC One and returns for the final three episodes next week. Got a story?
