"Maybe Happy Ending" Star Helen J Shen
The romantic musical comedy Maybe Happy Ending is one of the biggest Broadway hits this season. Set in Seoul, it's about two robots who fall in love and is surprisingly emotional. Helen J. Shen, 24, stars in the lead as Claire and gives a performance that will have you talking long after the show is over.
Helen landed the role after auditioning only once and too, through a single self-tape performance. The town is abuzz about Helen's talent and impending stardom.
I was lucky enough to catch up with her recently about her New York loves.
Where do you live in New York?
The Upper West Side, I love my proximity to Central Park and Riverside Park. It's a lovely respite to the hustle and bustle of New York City.
What is your favorite neighborhood in NYC and why?
I honestly love where I live. There are a bunch of amazing restaurants and bars, and the people watching (and dog watching) is impeccable.
Can you share some of your favorite spots in a Theater District and what makes them so great?
Bryant Park is a lovely green space on the East Side of Broadway. The library is also there, which is beautiful to look at, or a great place to get work done.
The best place for a pre-or post-theater meal and why. What are the dishes to order?
Din Tai Fung is a new addition to the Theater District, and you CAN'T miss the Sticky Rice Shao Mai or the Chocolate Xiao Long Bao with a side of salted cream. The entire menu is pretty solid, you can't go wrong.
Best Theater District watering hole and the drink to get?
Miss Nellie's is a lovely vibe post-show, and have a wonderful assortment of cocktails and mocktails. I also have to shout out The Long Room, across the street from the Belasco Theater because they have a Maybe Happy Ending drink that's gin based. It's floral and fresh-- exactly the kind of drink you'd want while you contemplate your mortality after watching Maybe Happy Ending.
Insider tips for enjoying a Broadway show. Anything to make the experience better?
Go in with an open mind. You can read reviews, ask around, but go to the theater to be affected by what you see. Let yourself form your own opinions and bring your lived experience to the viewing experience. In this day and age, being unadulteratedly present is a rarity. This one moment, this one performance will never happen again. Isn't that wonderful?
The New York City theater you love to go to and why?
I'm biased, but the Belasco is a stunning theater. It's intimate and ornate. It also happens to be considered the most haunted theater on Broadway, though I've never seen any ghosts.... yet.
My biggest takeaway from the show is:
We all have a finite amount of time on Earth, and we need to use that time to connect with each other instead of isolate from one another.
What other Broadway shows are on your radar right now?
John Proctor is the Villain seems to be right up my alley. As soon as there's a performance that I can catch during our show schedule, I'm sat.

New York City has some amazing escape rooms. Gotta shout out Mysstic Rooms because they have a theater-themed room that was SO much fun.
Can you share your favorite theaters around the world and why?
I saw Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theater in London, and it was one of my favorite theatrical experiences to date. Besides the stellar performances, the space was used in such an innovative way and opened my mind to the different possibilities of theater staging.

‘Dog Day Afternoon' Is Broadway Bound With Actors From ‘The Bear'
'Dog Day Afternoon,' a classic New York film about an ill-planned bank robbery in Brooklyn, has been adapted for the stage and will come to Broadway next spring. The production will star Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, both of whom have won Emmy Awards for their work in FX's 'The Bear.' The director will be Rupert Goold, who is the artistic director of the Almeida Theater in London and who has received Tony nominations for two of his previous Broadway shows, 'King Charles III' and 'Ink.' 'Dog Day Afternoon' tells the story of a group of hapless criminals who rob a bank, partly because one of them (a character named Sonny, played by Al Pacino in the 1975 film and to be played by Bernthal onstage) wants money to pay for his partner's gender-transition surgery. The robbery turns into a hostage-taking and a confrontation with law enforcement. The film, directed by Sidney Lumet, was based on a true story; it won an Academy Award for Frank Pierson's screenplay. The stage adaptation, a project that was previously announced in 2016, has been written by the playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 2015 for his drama 'Between Riverside and Crazy,' which was produced on Broadway in 2023. Guirgis has an ear for dialogue of down-and-out New Yorkers, and has written a number of acclaimed plays about working-class characters. Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach are best known for their work onscreen — Bernthal stars opposite Ben Affleck in 'The Accountant' and 'The Accountant 2,' while Moss-Bachrach's credits include 'Girls' and the upcoming movie 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps.' They will be making their Broadway debuts in this play, but both are experienced stage actors. Bernthal studied theater in Moscow, founded an upstate New York theater company, and has performed Off Broadway and at regional theaters; Moss-Bachrach began his stage career at Williamstown Theater Festival in New York and has since performed Off Broadway and in California. The play is being produced by Warner Bros. Theater Ventures (Warner Bros. produced the movie), along with Sue Wagner, John Johnson and Patrick Catullo. The announcement on Wednesday did not specify dates or a theater.

'Wicked: For Good' trailer drops today: Here's how to watch
Get ready to be changed "for good," because the trailer for the second " Wicked" film debuts Wednesday. According to a Universal Pictures press release, fans will get a "special first look" at the new trailer for "Wicked: For Good" -- the second half of the two-part "Wicked" film series -- on Wednesday evening, when the first "Wicked" film returns to theaters for a special one-night-only screening. The trailer will debut simultaneously in all North American time zones at more than 100 theater locations in the U.S. and Canada, according to the press release, "so that all attendees will be able to see the trailer at once, no matter where they live." Screenings will take place at 3 p.m. PT, 4 p.m. MT, 5 p.m. CT and 6 p.m. ET. Moviegoers who watch the film in theaters Wednesday will also receive exclusive "Wicked: For Good" giveaways, including an exclusive "Wicked: For Good" commemorative poster, according to the press release. The trailer will also be shared online following the screenings. Last month, the official "Wicked" movie account shared a video on Instagram featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo announcing the exciting news about the "Wicked: For Good" trailer. At Long Last, George Clooney Shared His Thoughts on ‘The Pitt'
You can take the actor out of the emergency room, but you can't take the emergency room out of the actor. Case in point: Former ER star George Clooney has nothing but kind words to say about his former costar Noah Wyle and Wyle's new propulsive medical drama, the HBO Max phenomenon The Pitt. On a June 3 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Clooney chatted with Meyers to promote his Broadway show Good Night, and Good Luck, a dramatization of broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow's clashes with Senator Joseph McCarthy during the senator's anti-Communist witch hunts during the 1950s. Clooney previously directed and costarred in a film version of Good Night, and Good Luck, released in 2007. After Meyers and Clooney discussed his Broadway show, the late-night host brought up both E/R (a forgotten sitcom that Clooney coincidentally appeared on early in his career) and ER, the broadcast TV juggernaut that catapulted him forward. That's when Meyers brought up the current success of one of Clooney's ER costars, Noah Wyle, who is both the star and executive producer of The Pitt. The former Dr. Doug Ross had nothing but kind words for the former Dr. John Carter regarding The Pitt. "Have you guys seen that show?" Clooney asked the audience, to which the crowd cheered. "It's so good." "We've been really dear friends since [ER], since we did the pilot. He's just the most honorable young man—I get to say, because I'm an old man. And I cannot be happier for his success on this show. The show is just a beautiful show. He does a great job with it." Clooney then comically admitted that he actually hated Noah Wyle for the effortless way he could recite medical jargon in ER's scripts. "He never had any trouble. He always could do it, and I hated him for it," joked Clooney. "People should hate Noah." While it's unlikely that Clooney will make a guest appearance on The Pitt—he is still busy as a movie star, and his last onscreen television performance was in the 2019 series Catch-22 on Hulu—it's comforting to know Clooney has kept tabs on one of his fellow ER alums.
