IEWG to submit report on caste survey soon
The IEWG, which met at the MCHRD Institute under the chairmanship of Justice B Sudarshan Reddy, finalised the report on Wednesday.
The group said that the report, employing a pioneering framework, calculates a Composite Backwardness Index (CBI) for each of the 242 castes in the SEEEPC survey.
'The report, spanning nearly 300 pages, presents a first-of-its-kind analytical model to measure socioeconomic backwardness and assigns a CBI score and rank for all 242 castes. The report is now awaiting final editorial touches and will be ready within a week,' it said.
The group has also intimated Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka about this and sought time to formally hand over the report.
Speaking to TNIE, IEWG convenor Praveen Chakravarthy said that they have thoroughly analysed the SEEEPC survey data, and given scores and ranks based on backwardness to each of the 242 castes.
'Every caste will get a score on its backwardness. It is for the first time that such an exercise has been taken up in the country. It will completely change the welfare parameters in the country. Telangana will be a role model for the entire nation in this regard,' he added.

Representatives from the ministry of corporate affairs, as well as central probe agencies like CBI and NIA also appeared before the committee chaired by BJP MP Radha Mohan Das Agarwal. The Financial Intelligence Unit-India (FIU-IND) raised concerns over the alarming increase in cyber-enabled financial frauds, many involving mule accounts – bank accounts operated by frauds but registered under the names of unsuspecting or complicit individuals. According to government data, India witnessed a 21-fold increase in such cases in 2024 as compared to 2022. In the first two months of 2025 alone, 17,768 cases of digital arrest were reported with financial losses exceeding Rs 210 crore; the total damage from this fraud has now surpassed Rs 2,000 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently warned the public about digital arrest. Experts and citizens, however, have questioned the lack of widespread public awareness campaigns. WHAT DOES CYBER FRAUD LOOK LIKE IN INDIA? The FIU's internal analysis has identified recurring cyber fraud patterns that continue to victimise thousands of Indians each month. Among the most prevalent are digital arrest fraud, where scammers pose as law enforcement officials to extort money from individuals through false accusations. Another growing threat is the electricity bill scam, where scammers send fake alerts and phishing links, using remote access tools like Anydesk to control victims' devices and siphon off funds. 'Why are there no public service messages on OTT platforms, cinema screens, or national television? Why aren't awareness drives being held in schools, colleges, or government institutions? Why not educate the masses through WhatsApp alerts or SMS campaigns?" an MP asked during the meeting, as per sources. Another MP remarked: 'The one that has escalated beyond expectations – digital arrest scams, now emerging as one of the most dangerous cyber frauds in the country." Experts have called for stronger institutional accountability in this high-stakes environment. While the CBI and NIA continue to probe high-level financial crime, the I4C, under the home ministry, remains the central coordinating body for cybercrime control. WHAT ARE THE CURRENT SAFEGUARDS? Representatives of the FIU told the panel that consultations have been held with police and administrative officials across all states and union territories. They said red flag indicators have been issued to banks and payment aggregators to detect and report mule accounts. Regulatory suggestions have been submitted to the Reserve Bank of India for stricter due diligence, IP monitoring, and product risk assessment. Advisories on customer verification and anti-tipping protocols have been issued in coordination with I4C, they added. WHAT IS THE ACTION PLAN? There is now a call for the formation of a dedicated national task force to tackle sophisticated scams like digital arrest, which often involve international actors and encrypted communications. The FIU has urged legal reforms to prohibit the use of mule accounts and SIM cards, which serve as the foundation of these fraud networks. These tools, often procured through organised crime syndicates, are used to bypass OTP and KYC protocols, making detection even harder.

Calcutta HC directs Bengal govt to submit report on rape case progress
The Calcutta HC on Thursday directed the West Bengal government to submit a progress report along with the case diary on the investigation into the law student rape case within seven days. A division bench headed by Justice Soumen Sen also directed the state education department to shut down union rooms in all colleges and universities. The court issued the directions while hearing three PILs on the alleged rape of a 24-year-old student on the campus of a South Kolkata law college by an alumnus and two seniors on June 25. The next hearing is scheduled for July 10. The college has also been asked to file a report on its probe into the alleged crime. Telangana Public Service Commission defends decision to conduct Group-I Mains before high court, denies any procedural violations
Hyderabad: The Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC) on Thursday defended the conduct and evaluation of the Group-I Mains examination, asserting before Justice Namavarapu Rajeshwar Rao of the high court that there was no mala fide intent or violation of statutory procedures, as alleged by the petitioners challenging the examination process. Representing the commission, its counsel argued that the examination was conducted transparently and in strict adherence to established procedures. He urged the court to consider the far-reaching consequences of annulling the examination in the absence of concrete evidence. 'The process was transparent. A significant number of qualified candidates belong to OBC, SC, ST, women, and physically challenged categories. Cancelling the examination on vague and unsubstantiated grounds would deal a severe blow to hundreds of aspirants who have invested years of preparation,' he submitted. The counsel further stated that the petitioners had failed to make specific or substantiated allegations. 'Except for a solitary writ petition containing a vague assertion, no petitioner has produced credible evidence of malfeasance. There are no claims of mala fides, no breach of statutory rules, and no indication that either the examination centres or the evaluation process was compromised,' he argued. He emphasised that the evaluation was conducted anonymously and randomly, using expert evaluators trained specifically for this exam. He denied allegations of selective evaluation or manipulation in the allotment of answer scripts. Addressing concerns raised about Telugu medium candidates, the commission clarified that evaluators proficient in both English and Telugu were appointed, and hence, the assessment was fair and unbiased. Regarding impersonation concerns, the commission submitted that biometric verification of candidates was conducted and cross-checked with nominal rolls approved by the chief superintendents at the respective centres. The high court is scheduled to continue hearing the matter on Friday.
