TVET applications surge to 189,000, more opportunities offered to STPM leavers
He said the government is now offering more opportunities to STPM holders who may not have secured a place in public universities due to limited spots.
'For those with STPM qualifications who didn't get accepted into any university, we are offering places through the Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN), particularly at six institutions.
'Additionally, under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW), institutions such as UniKL and University Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM) are also open for applications,' he said.
Zahid, who chairs the National TVET Council, said STPM holders can apply for technical programmes at UniKL and professional-based courses at UPTM, depending on their interests and academic background.
'These programmes are open to all races,' he added.
He also said that students with strong SPM results are eligible to enrol in foundational-level technical courses at UniKL and UPTM, providing more flexible entry points into the TVET ecosystem.

Six awarded Sabah Head of State Scholarship

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 19): National top scorer of the 2024 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), Daniel Hakimi Roland, 19, is among six students who received the 2025 Head of State of Sabah Scholarship. The outstanding social science stream student achieved the maximum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.00 in the STPM at Kota Klias Secondary School Sixth Form College, Beaufort, and has chosen to further his studies at a local university. The other five recipients are Selangor Matriculation College student, Nur Batrisya Sumar, 19, from Telipok, who will pursue a Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) at Durham University, United Kingdom; and Tenom-born student, Christabel Heng Fook Yun, 18, who will study medicine at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. Also awarded was Papar student, Elena Roland Banus, 21, who will pursue a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) at The University of Queensland, Australia, while Putatan student, Aisha Azizul, 19, will study BA Human, Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cambridge, England. Another recipient is aspiring accountant, Nurul Aisyah Awang Basri, 19, from Keningau, who will further her studies in Advanced Accounting with Placement at Queen's University, United Kingdom. The prestigious scholarship award ceremony was officiated by Sabah Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, at Istana Seri Kinabalu, on Tuesday. Also present were State Public Service Director General Datuk Zainudin Aman together with members of the Sabah State Government Scholarship Committee. The establishment of the Head of State Scholarship was approved by the State Cabinet on January 30, 1982, to be awarded to students with the best results in the STPM examination. On August 7, 1991, the Cabinet expanded the academic qualification criteria to include Foundation/Matriculation/A-Level students among both Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera applicants. The award is strictly merit-based, given to students with excellent academic results, who may choose to further their studies either locally or abroad.

Sandakan students receive Sabah State Education Fund
The recipients of Sabah State Education Fund. SANDAKAN (Aug 19): The commitment of the Sabah State Government's through Yayasan Sabah Group in strengthening education was reinforced with the handing over of the Sabah State Education Fund (TPNS) assistance on Tuesday at the Libaran Multipurpose Hall, Sandakan. The ceremony was headed by the Sabah Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Dr Haji Mohd Arifin bin Datuk Haji Mohd Arif. who is also the chairman of the TPNS Implementation Committee. Also present were the Yayasan Sabah director Dato' Sri Haji Gulamhaidar who serves as the Deputy Executive Chairman of TPNS, members of the TPNS Committee, accompanied by representatives of government agencies and educational institutions. This ceremony featured a total of 39 top-performing students, consisting of 16 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students, two Malaysian University English Test (MUET) students, 17 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students and four STPM (rural school) students from the year 2024. Each recipient received a cash aid of RM1,000 for high achievers in SPM, STPM and MUET, as well as RM500 for rural STPM students to help alleviate their financial burden in pursuing higher education. In addition, a total of 441 students from the B40 group received a one-off financial aid, consisting of 17 students from Sandakan Polytechnic, 143 students from the Sandakan Industrial Training Institute (ILP), 35 students from Sandakan Community College, 51 students from the Sandakan TVET Skills College, 104 undergraduate students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), two postgraduate students from UMS, 86 students from the Open University Malaysia (OUM) Sandakan Learning Centre, and three students from higher education institutions within the Sandakan district. At the same event, 50 students also received assistance in the form of an eyeglasses. Three schools received the Adopted School Assistance. SK Sungai Manila, Sandakan and SK Pulau Timbang, Sandakan, each received RM5,000 and SMK Tongod received RM10,000. Sekolah Pondok Miftahussalam, Sandakan, received RM6,500. Arifin also presented the Sandakan district Student Icon Honorarium to Mohammad Azmir bin Misnani in recognition of his outstanding achievements on both academics and co-curricular activities. In the same event, educational assistance was also provided to students through several existing initiatives including the School Effort Encouragement Assistance (BAGUS), the General Student Excellence Scheme (SUKSES), Special Examination Assistance (BAKTI) and the Best Student Incentive Aid (BISTARI) as part of ongoing efforts to support the development of this state's talent resources. TPNS is a proactive initiative by the Sabah State Government through the Yayasan Sabah Group in an effort to ease the financial burden of low-income families. It also reflects the commitment to ensure that education is accessible to all segments of society. The ceremony is hoped to serve as a catalyst of inspiration for students to continue pursuing excellence, hence producing a knowledgeable and competitive generation capable of contributing comprehensively to the progress of this state.
