Mother Who Fatally Drugged Her 2 Young Daughters Dies by Suicide in Arizona Prison
According to an official statement from the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR), 38-year-old Retta Cruse died on Feb. 21 "from an apparent act of self-harm by hanging.'
The statement said that Cruse was found unresponsive in her housing unit at Perryville Prison and that prison staff 'conducted life-saving measures until paramedics arrived.'
However, responding paramedics, in consultation with medical staff, pronounced Cruse dead on the scene.
The release further noted that Cruse was admitted to ADCRR custody in 2022 after she was sentenced out of Maricopa County for two counts of first-degree murder.
On Sept. 8, 2021, police responded to a report from a man who said that his two children were deceased in his home, per ABC 15 Arizona.
Upon entering the Phoenix apartment complex, authorities discovered 9-year-old Aleyah and 4-year-old Royal unresponsive in a bed. Cruse was found barricaded in a bedroom with self-inflicted knife wounds at the time, per the outlet.
ABC 15 reported that investigators later determined that Cruse had given her children prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications in order to sedate and overdose them intentionally.

Cruse was booked on two counts of first-degree murder on Sept. 14, 2021, after being released from the hospital for treatment for her wounds. She later pleaded guilty to the murders in 2022 and was sentenced that same year, per AZ Central.
Cruse, who was originally from New Jersey, had recently moved her family to Arizona for 'spiritual reasons,' per a GoFundMe set up to cover the children's burial costs, per NJ.com.
At the time, 12 News reported that Cruse had just lost a 'bitter' custody battle over her elder daughter, Aleyah.
Court documents stated that Cruse confessed to the crimes and said she committed them specifically because of the custody case, per the outlet.

Huntington Beach man fights for his life after e-bike accident
A Huntington Beach man was fighting for life Monday after he was critically injured in an e-bike accident on Saturday night. Family members and police have identified the man as Kolby Aipa, 20. 'Yes our baby boy is in the fight of his life, he IS still with us though,' his mother, Val Aipa, posted on social media late Sunday night. Huntington Beach police spokesman Corbin Carson said Monday that Aipa was being towed by a car of people that he was associated with on Pacific Coast Highway on Saturday night when he lost control of his e-bike and was struck by the same car that had been towing him. The accident occurred at 10:08 p.m. Saturday night, near the intersection of Seapoint Street and Pacific Coast Highway, Carson said. Aipa, critically injured, was taken to UCI Medical Center. There have been no arrests but the investigation is ongoing, Carson said. Police closed Pacific Coast Highway in both directions late Saturday night due to what they termed a 'major traffic collision investigation.' Northbound lanes were closed at Seapoint Street, with southbound lanes closed at Warner Avenue. A GoFundMe to support the Aipa family was set up by the Pai family, owners of Huntington Surf and Sport. As of mid-Monday afternoon it had raised nearly $40,000. Aipa Surf is a local surf apparel, surfboards and accessories company. Kolby Aipa's grandfather, Ben, founded the brand in 1970, creating the influential 'sting' design soon after.

Family seeks justice after woman killed in hit-and-run in South-Central El Paso
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) —The family of a 77-year-old woman killed in a hit-and-run crash in South-Central El Paso over the weekend is speaking out, asking for justice and pleading for the driver involved to come forward. According to El Paso Police, the crash happened just before 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, near the intersection of Alameda Avenue and Gibraltar Road. Family members say the victim was Maria Lopez, a mother and grandmother, known for her generosity and love for others. Police have not identified the victim in the crash yet. UPDATE: Woman pedestrian killed in hit-and-run near El Paso's Ascarate Park 'She would be the type to always say, 'Oh, it's someone's birthday. Let me cook some gorditas,'' said her daughter, Viviana Lopez. 'She cared about everyone.' Lopez tells KTSM her mother had been shopping that morning and was planning to visit family in Juarez. Police say a woman pedestrian was crossing Alameda when she was hit by what investigators describe as a light-colored SUV. She died at the scene and the driver fled, police said. 'Nobody with a soul does that,' Viviana Lopez said. 'I'm not sure how a person could just leave a sweet old lady there. I just want justice for my mom.' As of Monday evening, police had not formally identified the victim, and no arrests had been made. This marks El Paso's 34th traffic fatality of 2025, compared to 36 at this time last year.
