Potomac gives Make-A-Wish teen a taste of the islands
POTOMAC, Ill. (WCIA) — One Vermillion County village is banding together, giving a Make-A-Wish recipient a sendoff for her dream vacation. And, they brought the beach theme from more than 4,000 miles away. It was a rainy day in Central Illinois, but you could still find a slice of the island life in Potomac. The village's grade school hosted a sendoff for Aleyah Carley, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2022. DACC extends contract of interim President amidst search for permanent candidate 'I was scared, anxious, all that because I was going to be gone from my family for a while,' Carley said. 'We weren't really sure what all of it meant.' What followed was more than a year of traveling, treatment and trials. 'It's very exhausting,' said Aleyah's mother, Theresa Carley, 'It's, you know, a lot of sleepless nights wondering what the next day's going to bring.' After a few rounds of chemo and a bone marrow transplant, Aleyah is feeling better. But one social worker gave her a suggestion to give the 16-year-old an extra boost. They suggested applying for the Make-A-Wish program, which the family did in 2023. And last year, she learned that her wish would be granted. 'I was very excited,' Aleyah said. 'It's kind of like a shock … I was like, 'Wow, this is really happening.'' Vermilion Advantage gets grant to create jobs, improve economy In just a few days, Aleyah is going to get to take the trip of a lifetime. But for now, she gets a little taste of the island life. 'I chose Hawaii because I feel like that's like a once in a lifetime type thing that I want to be able to do again,' Aleyah said. The Carley's will be heading to Oahu this Sunday, but her Make-A-Wish sponsors wanted to celebrate with her at home as well. 'Our community has done so much for us over the past couple of years and supported us and encouraged us,' Theresa said. 'And now that we're in a really good spot, we really want to celebrate with them.' Aleyah said her and her family plan visit the Pearl Harbor Museum and explore the island, but what she's most looking forward to is relaxing and resetting after fighting the disease. 13-year-old girl from Concord reported missing: Police
CONCORD, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – The Concord Police Department is seeking the public's assistance in locating a missing 13-year-old. Officers believe Aleyah Crowder ran away from her home on Allison Street in Concord early Thursday morning around 3 a.m. She was reported missing by her grandmother who reportedly saw her leaving and getting into either a white or silver sedan. Queen City News is tracking CRIME in your area 🚨 >> Aleyah was last seen wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. She is described as a Black female with dark shoulder-length hair, approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and weighs approximately 130 pounds. Her mother and grandmother told officers that Aleyah has a history of staying somewhere in Charlotte when she has gone missing in the past. It is currently unknown where she is or who she may be staying with. Mother Who Fatally Drugged Her 2 Young Daughters Dies by Suicide in Arizona Prison
A woman convicted of killing her two young daughters in 2021 has died by suicide in prison. According to an official statement from the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR), 38-year-old Retta Cruse died on Feb. 21 "from an apparent act of self-harm by hanging.' The statement said that Cruse was found unresponsive in her housing unit at Perryville Prison and that prison staff 'conducted life-saving measures until paramedics arrived.' However, responding paramedics, in consultation with medical staff, pronounced Cruse dead on the scene. The release further noted that Cruse was admitted to ADCRR custody in 2022 after she was sentenced out of Maricopa County for two counts of first-degree murder. On Sept. 8, 2021, police responded to a report from a man who said that his two children were deceased in his home, per ABC 15 Arizona. Upon entering the Phoenix apartment complex, authorities discovered 9-year-old Aleyah and 4-year-old Royal unresponsive in a bed. Cruse was found barricaded in a bedroom with self-inflicted knife wounds at the time, per the outlet. ABC 15 reported that investigators later determined that Cruse had given her children prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications in order to sedate and overdose them intentionally. Cruse was booked on two counts of first-degree murder on Sept. 14, 2021, after being released from the hospital for treatment for her wounds. She later pleaded guilty to the murders in 2022 and was sentenced that same year, per AZ Central. Cruse, who was originally from New Jersey, had recently moved her family to Arizona for 'spiritual reasons,' per a GoFundMe set up to cover the children's burial costs, per At the time, 12 News reported that Cruse had just lost a 'bitter' custody battle over her elder daughter, Aleyah.
