Pregnant teen who was raped is murdered by fiance in honour killing
But when her fiance discovered she was five-and-a-half months pregnant with the rapist's child, he shot the 18-year-old to death in what's being described as an honour killing.
The tragic teen was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest but succumbed to her injuries. Her baby also died.
According to Turkish media, Budak was raped by another man in Istanbul just weeks before her engagement. When her fiance learned of the rape pregnancy, he called off the engagement.
On the night she was murdered, cops say the ex-fiancé lured Budak to meet, pretending that he wanted them to talk. But when they met, he pulled out a gun and shot her in the chest and ear.
The suspect was arrested shortly after. The man who raped Budak was convicted of her sex attack along with several others and has been jailed.
'When she said she was in pain, her fiancé took her to the hospital and learned she was pregnant,' her grandfather, Orhan, told reporters.
Even her own family had not been aware of the rape and pregnancy. The accused's family demanded that he call off the marriage to Budak. The 19-year-old accused killer has reportedly confessed.
Budak's murder was the 209th femicide in Turkey so far this year. Women's groups have accused the fundamentalist government of turning a blind eye to the crisis.
On Sunday, the Governor's Office stated that International Women's Day protests and marches in the city had been banned. Women's groups say they will move forward with the marches despite the ban.
They said: 'We have walked for 19 years and will walk on the 20th year, too.'
Femicides remain a deeply rooted and urgent problem in Turkey with at least 420 women murdered in 2024 by partners, ex-partners or other men from within their immediate circle.
Women's groups have also highlighted the growing violence against young girls, a disturbing trend that became one of the most publicly debated issues in the country last year.

Boston Mayor To Trump: 'Stop Attacking Our Cities To Hide Your Administration's Failures'
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu fired back at U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi over threats to get leaders of Democratic-leaning cities to comply with the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. 'Here is our response: Stop attacking our cities to hide your administration's failures,' Wu said during a Tuesday press conference. 'Unlike the Trump administration, Boston follows the law, and Boston will not back down from who we are and what we stand for.' Related: In a letter from Wu to Bondi also released Tuesday, the mayor hailed Boston as a 'beacon of freedom, and a home for everyone' in her formal response to Bondi giving so-called sanctuary jurisdictions one week to comply with federal immigration laws or face Department of Justice action. 'You are hereby notified that your jurisdiction has been identified as one that engages in sanctuary policies and actions that thwart federal immigration enforcement to the detriment of the interests of the United States,' read last week's letter from Bondi. 'This ends now.' Bondi sent near-identical letters, dated Aug. 13, to mayors of 32 cities and a handful of county executives for jurisdictions that generally refuse to assist with federal immigration raids. The attorney general demanded a response that 'confirms your commitment to complying with federal law and identifies the immediate initiatives you are taking to eliminate laws, policies, and practices that impede federal immigration enforcement.' Oakland, California, Mayor Barbara Lee (D) told NewsNation that Trump is 'fearmongering' about her city despite the crime rate there being down. 'He's fearmongering and trying to distract from his difficulties he's having,' Lee told NewsNation. 'Militarizing a city is unconstitutional.' Lee was referring to Trump's deployment of National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., and his recent comments suggesting Oakland could be next to see boots on the ground. In Oakland, crime is down nearly 30% from this time last year, according to data from the Oakland Police Department. 'The truth is, our crime rate is coming down,' Lee told NewsNation. 'Do we have more work to do? Absolutely, yes, but this doesn't make any sense.' In Wu's letter in response to Bondi, she said the Trump administration has engaged in 'false and continuous attacks on American cities and millions of our residents.' 'These attacks all come back to a common aim: the Trump administration seeks to divide, isolate, and intimidate our cities, and make Americans fearful of one another,' she added. Wu wrote that the Constitution gives local governments the freedom to oversee public safety 'without the threat of unlawful interference from the federal government.' 'The Founding Fathers included these protections as a direct result of the attempted coercion of Boston by an unaccountable and distant monarch, and this city's refusal to bow down to tyranny,' she continued. Wu in particular cited the Boston Trust Act, which allows local police to reject working with immigration officials. 'Our city's longstanding and productive partnership with state and federal law enforcement to protect the people of Boston far predates your tenure,' Wu wrote to Bondi. Adding that Boston stands in solidarity with 'the cities and communities targeted by this federal administration,' Wu concluded: 'Boston will never back down from being a beacon of freedom, and a home for everyone.' At her press conference, Wu also took a swipe at Trump's continued attempts to distract from releasing more information related to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Trump DOJ is investigating whether DC crime stats were manipulated
The Trump Justice Department is investigating whether Washington, DC's Metropolitan Police Department manipulated crime data, according to two sources. The investigation, which is being run by the US attorney's office in DC, is an escalation in the city's battle against a federal law enforcement takeover from the Trump administration. President Donald Trump appeared to confirm the probe in a social media post, writing that 'D.C. gave Fake Crime numbers in order to create a false illusion of safety. This is a very bad and dangerous thing to do, and they are under serious investigation for so doing!' The Justice Department declined to comment on the investigation. CNN has reached out to Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Metropolitan Police Department for comment. The investigation comes following reports that an MPD commander was placed on administrative leave amid accusations that the department was falsifying crime data in one district, marking offenses as lower-level crimes than they might actually be. Trump and other administration officials have for months slammed the capital city, alleging that its Democratic leadership has allowed violent crime to run rampant for years. When federal police descended just over a week ago, the president said it was necessary to combat what he said was skyrocketing crime rates. City officials have pushed back on the allegation, and the MPD's public statistics say that violent crime has dropped almost 30% from this time last year. And in January the DOJ said that in 2024, violent crime dropped 35 % from the previous year, marking the lowest it had been in more than three decades.
