Ezra Miller has ‘remorse' over past behaviour, hints at return to Hollywood

Global News2 days ago

Actor Ezra Miller revealed that they have 'a lot of remorse' for their past behaviour after stepping away from Hollywood for a couple of years.
Miller's career was derailed after they were at the centre of several criminal cases and the subject of numerous allegations, including assault and grooming.
The star of The Flash, who is non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, addressed their past controversies in an interview with Lo Speciale Giornale following their first major red-carpet appearance at the Cannes Film Festival since stepping away from the entertainment industry.
'When you work in this industry, you will find yourself in deep relation with a lot of people who do not give a single f— about you or your well-being at all,' Miller said.
'Not that I don't hold a lot of remorse and lamentation for a lot of things that I did and for a lot of things that happened in that time, but I'm really, really grateful for the lessons that came with that abyss.

'When we go through those crucibles, if we can survive — which was up in the air for me, if I'm being real — we then have that capacity to see other people in their crucibles and just to reach towards them.
'That grows more and more rarefied in our world, too. Like, the capacity to do that, the desire to do that, the willingness to do that.
'We've become very consumed in notions of perception, self-perception, how we're perceived in the world. I really believe in digging past that and being a friend to people. And the people who did that for me, they have my lifelong devotion.'
Miller said they attended the Cannes Film Festival at the request of director Lynne Ramsay, whom they called 'one of the greatest living filmmakers' and shared that they're working on a new movie together.

'I'm working with her again, that will likely be the first thing I do. It's a film that her and I are writing together,' they said. 'And I came to Cannes because she asked me to come, and if there's anything I really still believe in in my life, it's devotion to one's people, one's loved ones … above all else.'
Miller said their current relationship with the movie industry is on 'tentative grounds.'
'If you've been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes, where every photographer and every weirdo, every rich genocidal freak (will) be there, you know what I mean?' Miller said. 'It's not an easy re-entry.'

Joe Manganiello and Ezra Miller attend the Filming Italy 2025 red carpet at Forte Village Resort on June 21, 2025 in Santa Margherita di Pula, Italy. In 2022, Miller was arrested twice in Hawaii for disorderly conduct and harassment at a karaoke bar when the actor grabbed a mic from a singing woman and lunged at a man playing darts. They were later arrested again on suspicion of assault for allegedly throwing a chair at a woman, leaving her with a half-inch gash on her forehead.
Before those two incidents, Miller was the source of at least 10 police calls in Hawaii for things like loitering, filming people at a gas station and arguing with people in public.
They were also charged with felony burglary in Vermont after police said they stole several bottles of alcohol from an empty residence.
In June 2022, a Massachusetts mother was granted a temporary order of protection after a judge found that her child faced 'substantial likelihood of immediate danger of harassment' at Miller's hands.

Reports also emerged that Miller had been housing a mother and three children at their farmhouse in Vermont, alarming the children's father, who claimed that guns and marijuana were easily accessible on the property.
The father claimed he contacted Vermont's Department for Children and Families to carry out a wellness check on the children. The mother alleged that Miller helped her escape an abusive situation with her ex and that the farm has been a 'healing haven' for the family.
Miller previously underwent treatment for 'complex mental health issues' in August 2022 and apologized for their actions, acknowledging their erratic behaviour.
They said that a period of crisis prompted their recent actions and that they were seeking mental health treatment.
'Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,' Miller explained.
'I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behaviour. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.'

Okanagan author releases book about street-level sex workers to end stigma

Through her fingertips, Joanna Cockerline lets the stories of the marginalized and the unhoused pour out. In her debut novel titled Still, the author utilizes her experience as an outreach worker to tell the stories that many people never hear. 'I was tremendously inspired by the strength I've seen and the solidarity and friendships and communities on the street,' said Cockerline. 'I wanted to peel back those layers and really celebrate that sense of possibility and hope that perhaps gets overlooked.' The Okanagan-based writer set the story in her own backyard, much of it taking place on Kelowna's Leon Avenue. 'The main character (Kayla) is an 18-year-old girl who is unhoused and working on the streets as a sex worker, but she's sober,' said Cockerline. Story continues below advertisement Throughout the book, we follow Kayla as she helps her friend that is middle class, struggling with addiction and navigating mental health issues, all the while on a mission to find her friend called 'Little Zoe'. She didn't have to look far for inspiration. The author leaned on her experience as an outreach worker and being the cofounder of the Just Us Street Outreach Program. 'We provide nighttime street outreach. We're there for everybody who needs it. We're especially focused on street-level sex workers,' said Cockerline. 'But, if anyone needs anything, we're there.' Doubling down on her dedication to supporting those in need, Cockerline is donating all of her earnings from the book to the Just Us Street Outreach Program. In her book, Cockerline is pulling the thread to unravel the stigma and stereotypes people like her characters face. 'I think a lot of these issues transcend demographic borders, and it's really important not to judge and stereotype in one camp and really explore it in a more holistic way,' said Cockerline. She hopes that her book will help provide a new perspective when it hits shelves across the country in September. Story continues below advertisement After its release, Cockerline will host a reading Sept. 19 at The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art in Kelowna and will sign books at Indigo in Orchard Park Mall Sept. 21.

Diddy's lawyers request acquittal on all counts after prosecution rests case

The prosecution rested Tuesday at Sean 'Diddy' Combs ' sex trafficking trial, capping a more than six-week-long presentation of evidence against the hip-hop maven that confronted him with former employees and two former girlfriends who expressed regret at his treatment of them over the past two decades. After the prosecution rested, Combs' lawyers asked U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian to halt the trial immediately and throw out the charges, arguing the charges weren't proven. The government rested after defence lawyer Teny Geragos finished questioning the prosecution's final witness: Joseph Cerciello, a Homeland Security Investigations agent. Prosecutors have cited the 'freakoffs' as proof of the sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges that resulted in Combs' arrest last September. Defence lawyers, though, say they were consensual sexual encounters consistent with the swingers lifestyle. Story continues below advertisement Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty and has remained incarcerated without bail in a federal lockup in Brooklyn after multiple judges concluded last fall that he was a danger to the community. The government's case consisted of 34 witnesses, including former employees of Combs' Bad Boy Entertainment companies, but the bulk of its proof has come from the testimony of two former girlfriends: Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura and a model and internet personality known to jurors only by the pseudonym 'Jane.' Ventura, 38, testified for four days during the trial's first week, saying she felt pressured to engage in hundreds of 'freak offs' because the encounters would enable her to be intimate with Combs after performing sexually with male sex workers while he watched them slather one another with baby oil and sometimes filmed the encounters. Story continues below advertisement Jane testified for six days about the sexual performances she labeled 'hotel nights,' saying that she was putting them into perspective after beginning therapy three months ago. She said she felt coerced into engaging in them as recently as last August, but did so because she loved and still loves Combs. Sign up for breaking National newsletter Sign Up By providing your email address, you have read and agree to Global News' Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy Ventura was in a relationship with Combs from 2007 to 2018, while Jane was frequently with him from 2021 until his arrest, which cancelled her plan to meet him at the New York hotel where he was taken into custody. The Associated Press doesn't generally identify people who say they are victims of sexual abuse unless they come forward publicly, as Ventura has done. After prosecutors rested Tuesday, the jury was sent to lunch. When they return, a defence presentation was expected to be completed by the end of the day without any witnesses. Throughout the trial, defence lawyers have made their case for exoneration through their questioning of witnesses, including several who testified reluctantly or only after they were granted immunity from any crimes they may have committed. Combs has been active in his defence, writing notes to his lawyers and sometimes helping them decide when to stop questioning a witness. He was admonished once by the judge for nodding enthusiastically toward jurors during a successful stretch of cross-examination by one of his lawyers. Prosecutors complained that his gestures were a form of testifying without being subject to cross-examination. The judge warned that he could be excluded from his trial if it happened again. Story continues below advertisement In the past week, prosecutors and defence lawyers have shown jurors over 40 minutes of recordings Combs made of the 'freak offs' or 'hotel nights.' Several jurors occasionally seemed squeamish as they viewed and listened to audio of the encounters, but most did not seem to react. In her opening statement, Geragos had called the videos 'powerful evidence that the sexual conduct in this case was consensual and not based on coercion.' Closing arguments were tentatively scheduled for Thursday.
