Ruben Hyppolite: Bears teammate Kyle Monangai is best running back he's faced
The Chicago Bears were expected to add a running back in the 2025 NFL draft, but they didn't do it until the seventh round with the selection of Kyle Monangai out of Rutgers.
Monangai, who was named to the All-Big Ten team in 2023 and 2024, is a powerful runner who put himself among the best running backs in the conference, and he left a lasting impression on one of his new teammates and fellow rookies.
Before they selected Monangai in the seventh round, the Bears drafted Maryland linebacker Ruben Hyppolite in the fourth round. Having gone against Monangai in their college careers -- both playing in the Big Ten -- Hyppolite had high praise for his new teammate, calling him the best running back he's ever faced.
"I tell everybody that he's the best running back I faced in my career in the Big Ten," Hyppolite told the CHGO Bears Podcast. "He has a great ability to run behind his pads, he's fast and slippery. He knows how to get through the holes and he knows how to finish runs, he's physical. When you look at him you don't really expect physicality with his size, when he runs the football you definitely feel it when you tackle him. I played him for about three, four years, so I had to see him every year, it was always a good battle."
Both Monangai and Hyppolite will have a chance to earn playing time as rookies with competition at their respective positions. There's optimism about both rookies having a role in what should be a very competitive roster for new head coach Ben Johnson.

Rodgers last played at Soldier Field in December 2022, where he led the Packers to a 28–19 win. He threw for 182 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions, extending his dominant run over the Bears. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams throws a pass against the Becker-Imagn Images As for Williams, he's entering his second NFL season after throwing for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions as a rookie. Darnell Wright Turns Heads at Bears Minicamp, Sparks Role Speculation
Darnell Wright Turns Heads at Bears Minicamp, Sparks Role Speculation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mini camp is officially in the books for the Chicago Bears, and while head coach Ben Johnson made it clear the team is 'not ready for primetime,' he emphasized that there's plenty of good to build on. The early stages of this new regime have been all about installing structure, energy, and evaluation. And on the final day of practice, a surprising highlight came from one of the team's biggest men in the trenches. Advertisement In a clip posted by Bears insider Zach Pearson, offensive lineman Darnell Wright stole the spotlight with an unexpected show of athleticism. '#Bears practice in the books today. Some fun to start practice with OL and QBs catching passes. Bears OTAGetty Images Here's Darnell Wright making a nice one handed catch,' Pearson wrote on X, formerly Twitter. The video shows Wright twisting and extending to make a spectacular one-handed grab, setting off laughs and applause from teammates. Following practice, Johnson explained the reasoning behind the drill: 'I let those guys know, we only do this once a year and it's an evaluation. We'll circle back in training camp and in the season to see who we can trust to catch the ball or throw the ball. I think there's a couple guys on the O-line that stood out.' Darnell WrightGetty Images Wright, who started 16 games at right tackle last season, has become a cornerstone on the Bears' line. Johnson, who famously dialed up creative formations in Detroit—such as using tackle-eligible plays and misdirection—may already have ideas forming. Advertisement While linemen like Wright aren't often targeted in games, the mere threat could force opposing defenses to prepare for something out of the ordinary. And with Wright's athleticism, it's not hard to imagine a trick play or two waiting in the wings. Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson Earn Bears Top PFF Guard Duo Ranking
Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson Earn Bears Top PFF Guard Duo Ranking originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Bears spent this offseason laying the groundwork for a new era—literally. With second-year quarterback Caleb Williams ready to take the reins and new head coach Ben Johnson crafting a fresh offensive identity, the team's front office focused on reinforcing the line of scrimmage. After a year full of growing pains and inconsistent protection, they knew changes had to be made. And now, those moves are getting noticed. A new round of rankings has the Bears near the top of the league in a key position group. Advertisement Pro Football Focus just dropped its latest rankings—'PFF Guard Rankings: Top 32 ahead of the 2025 NFL season'—put together by Mason Cameron and shared by former NFL tight end Clay Harbor. And guess what? The Bears landed at No. 2 on the list of top guard duos heading into the new season. Soldier Field on August 17, 2024 in Chicago, IllinoisGetty Images That's no small feat considering where things stood just a year ago. The ranking is a nod to the new talent Chicago has brought in and how much faith analysts are placing in the revamped interior line. Let's talk about those new faces. Joe Thuney, 32, arrived from Kansas City with a Super Bowl resume and recent Pro Bowl honors under his belt. He's long been one of the steadiest pass protectors in the league. Joe ThuneyGetty Images Lining up next to him is Jonah Jackson, 28, who made his mark in Detroit and earned a Pro Bowl alternate nod back in 2021. Together, they bring toughness, leadership, and experience to an offense that's betting big on Caleb Williams. Darnell Wright #58 and Jonah Jackson #73Getty Images As for PFF, they've built a reputation as one of the go-to sources for player grading and advanced football analytics. Their rankings combine deep stats, film study, and consistency metrics to evaluate talent beyond the surface. So when they rank a duo this high, it carries weight.
