Genoa sign Rennes' Leo Østigård on loan
Les Rouge et Noir signed Østigård from Napoli last year in a €7m deal. The former Brighton centre-back was expected to fill the void left by Belgium international centre-back Arthur Theate, but he failed to make his mark and was already on his way out six months in. He joined Bundesliga side Hoffenheim on loan with an option to buy for the second part of the campaign and was deemed surplus to requirements by Rennes.

But the Rossoneri finished eighth in the Italian league last season and lost the Cup final to Bologna. Bologna was therefore given the top seed even though it finished ninth in Serie A, pushing Milan down into the earlier rounds. Milan will next face Lecce in late September. Also advancing were: Empoli, Sassuolo, Genoa, Venezia, Como, Cagliari, Pisa, Palermo, Frosinone and Parma. Serie A starts next weekend with Milan opening against promoted Cremonese on Saturday, again at San Siro. It remains to be seen whether Leão will be available for the league opener.
