An apparent injury to Rafael Leão made it a bittersweet season debut for AC Milan as the Portugal winger and United States international Christian Pulisic both scored in a 2-0 win over Serie B side Bari in the opening round of the Italian Cup on Sunday.
Leão appeared to injure his right calf after celebrating his headed goal early on and had to be substituted.
Pulisic, meanwhile, followed up a shot off the crossbar in the first half by finishing off an exchange with Santiago Gimenez — who came on for Leão — shortly after the break at San Siro.
Newly signed Luka Modrić came on in the 66th for his Milan debut at age 39. The former Ballon d'Or winner joined the seven-time European champion in July after 13 seasons with Real Madrid.
Massimiliano Allegri, who was rehired as Milan's coach after winning Serie A with the Rossoneri nearly 15 years ago, was suspended. He began serving a two-match ban for an ugly outburst directed at the referees during the Italian Cup final as Juventus' manager in 2024. The outburst resulted in Juventus firing Allegri.

Milan is usually one of the top eight seeds that has byes for the opening rounds of the Italian Cup and begins competing in December. But the Rossoneri finished eighth in the Italian league last season and lost the Cup final to Bologna. Bologna was therefore given the top seed even though it finished ninth in Serie A, pushing Milan down into the earlier rounds.
Milan will next face Lecce in late September.
Also advancing were: Empoli, Sassuolo, Genoa, Venezia, Como, Cagliari, Pisa, Palermo, Frosinone and Parma. Serie A starts next weekend with Milan opening against promoted Cremonese on Saturday, again at San Siro.
It remains to be seen whether Leão will be available for the league opener.

PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani agrees to take huge pay cut to force through Juventus move as long-running summer saga comes to an end
Forward accepts major salary reduction Juventus close long-running transfer pursuit PSG striker keen to revive Serie A career Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? The French striker Kolo Muani has agreed to take a pay cut in order to seal his permanent return to Juve from Paris Saint-Germain, according to reports in Italy. The striker, who impressed during a six-month loan spell in Turin with eight goals in 16 Serie A games, has become a priority signing for the Bianconeri. Juve are expected to spend between €55m (£47m/$64m)-€58m (£50m/$68m), structured around a significant loan fee followed by an obligation to buy, while the player will see his salary reduced from around €9m at PSG to approximately €7m plus bonuses in Turin. THE BIGGER PICTURE This move underlines Turin club's strategy of pragmatism in the transfer market, willing to stretch finances for a key forward but also dependent on offloading assets like Douglas Luiz or potentially Dusan Vlahovic to balance the books. For PSG, Muani's departure signals another reshuffle in their attacking setup as they continue to streamline the squad. The French striker's decision to accept reduced wages highlights both his desire to stay in Turin and the pull Juventus still commands in European football. TELL ME MORE The deal's structure is as intriguing as the player's commitment. By frontloading a hefty loan fee, Juve can lessen the burden of the future obligation to buy, a tactic that gives them more breathing room under financial fair play restrictions. Meanwhile, Kolo Muani's choice to take a salary cut is rare in today's game and seen as a decisive factor in unlocking the move. His €7m salary still reflects his status as a top-tier striker, but the gesture reveals how eager he is to play a central role at the Allianz Stadium. WHAT NEXT FOR JUVENTUS? Juve now look to finalise the sale of Luiz, expected to bring in over €30m (£26m/$35m), while keeping one eye on offers for Vlahovic. Kolo Muani's arrival could redefine the club's attacking hierarchy, with manager Igor Tudor likely to build his front line around the Frenchman.

Monaco: Breel Embolo on the move?
The striker's future could be written in Serie A, with Milan and Rome ready to offer him a fresh start. Monaco: Breel Embolo on the move? Left out of AS Monaco's squad for the opening day of Ligue 1 against Le Havre, Breel Embolo is reportedly attracting interest from several Italian clubs, including AC Milan and AS Roma. Signed three seasons ago from the Bundesliga for around €13 million, the Swiss striker of Cameroonian descent has never fully lived up to the expectations placed upon him. Powerful and boasting tremendous work rate, the Swiss international turned heads from his first matches in Germany. However, a serious injury during the 2023/24 season halted his progress and reignited doubts about his future in the Principality. According to L'Équipe, talks are underway as the player and club struggle to reach a contractual agreement. This situation could speed up his departure before the end of the transfer window. Since arriving in Monaco, Breel Embolo has played 88 matches, scoring 22 goals and providing 13 assists. Decent numbers, but considered insufficient compared to the initial expectations.
