Grayslake Central's Katelyn Marcelain is undaunted in supersectional. ‘Fighting back,' she kindles comeback.

Chicago Tribune04-03-2025
Katelyn Marcelain's nonstop activity is one of the reasons the Grayslake Central girls basketball team has played in two straight supersectionals.
When the senior forward is on the court, the Rams connect better, and the whole operation runs more smoothly.
'She just quietly goes about her business,' Grayslake Central coach Steve Ikenn said. 'She goes out there and grinds. She just does whatever we need her to do, and she does it with a smile on her face. People don't realize what she does for us.'
The 5-foot-11 Marcelain was both highly visible and highly productive during the Rams' 51-45 loss to Montini in the Class 3A Hersey Supersectional at the Forest View Educational Center in Arlington Heights on Monday. She seemed to be wherever the action was, getting her finger tips on a loose ball, forcing an opponent into a tough shot or corralling one of her team-high eight rebounds.
'She's always good to make some shots, get some rebounds, get some blocks, play good defense,' Ikenn said.
Marcelain's all-around effort helped the Rams (28-6) overcome a 26-8 deficit in a span of nine minutes. She made free throws on two separate trips as Grayslake Central closed the first half with seven straight points. Early in the third quarter, Marcelain hit her fourth 3-pointer of the season and assisted senior forward Madison Hoffmann, who scored a team-high 20 points, on the first of her two 3-pointers.
By the time senior guard/forward Annie Wolff scored with two minutes left in the quarter, the Rams were on a 23-3 run and led 31-29.
'Obviously, the offense doesn't run through me, and I've never been a big scorer,' Marcelain said. 'I've always focused on the defense and rebounding. I may not be able to do some of the stuff my teammates can do, but I can help the energy.'
Marcelain did that from the opening tip. She chased down a loose ball to extend two of the Rams' first three possessions, and she lofted a perfect entry pass to Hoffmann for the team's first basket on the other possession. On Grayslake Central's fourth possession, Marcelain grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled as she tried to score, leading to two made free throws.
'She makes all of those extra hustle plays,' Ikenn said.
Marcelain finished with seven points, three assists and two steals against Montini, which also beat Grayslake Central in the supersectional last year.
'When we cut the lead down and we took the lead, that was really exciting,' Marcelain said. 'At halftime … we knew we'd come back stronger than ever. Take things one possession at a time.'
Game after game, Marcelain's teammates know she will have a positive effect.
'We can always depend on her to get rebounds because she never gives up on a play,' junior point guard Mosey Drevline said. 'You always see her on the ground diving for balls. She's so tough, and she never gives up. She just has the heart. She cares about everything so deeply and wants everyone to do well.'
Marcelain leaves it all on the court.
'We always have to have positive energy, whether we're down 18 or not,' she said. 'The reason we fought back is because we had that energy, and it's hard to find when you're losing. We cared about one another and wanted the win for us. We proved a lot by fighting back.'

Puka Nacua: Rams addition Davante Adams is ‘adding tools to everybody's skill set'

LOS ANGELES — Puka Nacua was at his Los Angeles Rams teammate's wedding when he got the call. Nacua was on the dance floor celebrating defensive end Kobie Turner, when his phone lit up. 'A lot of phone calls you decline at that moment,' Nacua told Yahoo Sports, but I'm like, 'Coach Sean McVay? Hello, hello.'' McVay asked Nacua: 'What do you think about Davante?' From the dance floor of Turner's wedding in March, Nacua celebrated the Rams signing three-time All-Pro receiver Davante Adams. On one hand, Adams is just the latest in a deep pool of high-caliber talent who have guided Nacua since the Rams selected him in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. 'I feel like a little kid in a candy store with Cooper Kupp, Matthew Stafford, Davante Adams,' Nacua said. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] On the other hand: Adams brings to the Rams receiver room a perspective that Kupp did not. Kupp's eight strong NFL seasons all came with the Rams (until the Seahawks signed him this spring) and all came under head coach Sean McVay's offense. Adams arrives with a pro résumé spanning a range of play-callers across eight Green Bay Packers seasons, two-plus years with the Las Vegas Raiders and the better part of last season with the New York Jets. Rams leadership liked the idea of bringing those perspectives into their building. 'A lot of people in our ecosystem have been here, so I always think it's beneficial when someone comes,' general manager Les Snead told Yahoo Sports. 'My abstract artist mind [thinks] it's probably some version of organic diversification coming into the room that you get someone who's been other places, seen other things things, done it in different ways — but they're still at the top of the game. 'That's a benefit.' Adams arrives coming off his sixth career season over 1,000 yards, surpassing the mark in 2024 despite an in-season trade from the Raiders to the Jets. In 11 years, Adams has caught 957 passes for 11,844 yards and 103 touchdowns. He's averaged 1,228 yards and 11 touchdowns per 17-game season (he entered the league before it bumped to 17 from 16) and twice led the league in receiving touchdowns. Nacua watches wide-eyed as Adams shows him new nuances to routes and how to better capitalize on his leverage. Adams and Nacua both pride themselves on running across the middle of the field fearlessly, but Nacua said Adams has reminded him that just because he can take contact doesn't mean he needs to or even necessarily should. Adams has shown him different route stems to elevate his game. 'I always take the contact and say that I'm bigger than somebody,' Nacua said. 'We get to the break point, I'll shrug you off and be able to run and get the ball. But it definitely does save some shoulder pain when you can win from negative leverage and not run into people all the time.' Nacua is considering whether his defender is playing with a high shoulder or low, and what that depth means for the receiver's best angle. Adams' red-zone releases have left Nacua saying: 'Holy cow, that's teach tape right there.' 'How he tries to marry up his slant with the fade,' Nacua said. 'We don't run a ton of stuff outside the numbers because of how condensed our offense is, but trying to figure out, on my slant release [how] he's heading up to inside leverage and to threaten outside. I would take the slant as kind of a speed release for the fade ball and then being able to work kind of a false acceleration into the slant. 'Using that for both reps and trying to win and make them marry up.' In recent weeks, that Rams work has come with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo as Stafford rehabilitates an aggravated disc in his back. McVay echoed multiple Rams sources Thursday in saying that Stafford would have played in recent weeks if it were the regular season even as he remains sidelined in training camp. Stafford missed the Rams' joint practice this week with the Cowboys and will not participate in the Rams-Chargers joint practice next week. But if a Saturday workout goes well, McVay said, Stafford will return to Rams-only practice Monday. Nacua said he's 'very confident' in Stafford's ability to reintegrate quickly, the quarterback continuing to discuss offensive tweaks with his receivers while unable to practice. Stafford's watching Adams 'adding tools to everybody's skill set,' Nacua said, and assessing what each means for their ability to fight through contact, keep running and get in and out of breaks. 'There's a mastery that he has of the football field and especially of our offense,' Nacua said of Stafford. 'His standard for himself always makes it super easy to be out here because he wants to put it on the right shoulder, the front palm, on every cut. Every route he knows exactly where is the best spot to put the ball against, whether it's based on the defense or how one receiver might catch it differently from another.' Stafford's mastery helped Nacua to 2,476 yards and nine touchdowns in two regular seasons despite missing six games last year. Adding Adams to the mix after Kupp, Nacua thinks, will only unlock another level of potential. 'I've learned, I feel like, at an accelerated rate because of them,' Nacua said. 'It's like a dream come true.'

Puka Nacua fantasy football preview 2025: Stats, season outlook, predictions

Zachary Krueger, Puka Nacua 2025 Fantasy Football Snapshot Post-IR last season, Nacua dominated with elite efficiency and heavy volume. The Rams replaced Cooper Kupp with Davante Adams this offseason, but Puka remains top target. Health is key for Nacua, but top-five WR finish well within reach. Head to and use code ROTO20 for 20% off. 2024: Nacua's historic rookie season set expectations for year two sky high, but it quickly became clear there was more risk involved than fantasy managers were willing to admit. Nacua went down with a knee injury in training camp, threatening his availability for Week 1. Though he did ultimately suit up for LA's opener, fantasy managers who exercised caution with his injury were vindicated when he aggravated the issue in Week 1 and was placed on injured reserve. On the other hand, Puka's fantasy backers got the last laugh when he ripped off a 75/955/3 receiving line in the 10 games he played post-IR. What's changed: Nacua overshadowed former superstar Cooper Kupp in the second half of the season, running circles around him in both the counting stats and the advanced metrics. The Rams cut ties with Kupp at the end of the season and replaced him with Davante Adams. The former Jet still topped two yards per route at age 31 and out-produced Garrett Wilson when they shared the field. Outlook: Though Adams' numbers remained strong in 2024, Aaron Rodgers was force-feeding him targets once he joined the Jets. Adams won't have that advantage in LA, meaning fantasy managers shouldn't be overly concerned with his impact on Nacua. Puka led all receivers in targets per route (.35) and yards per route (3.2). It wasn't a close race either. He finished as the WR3 in PPR points per game despite leaving multiple contests early. As long as he stays healthy, fantasy managers should expect a top-five finish from Nacua. **Projections from Spotlight Sports Group Go to: All players | QBs | RBs | WRs | TEs

Rams' Matthew Stafford to practice Monday if workout goes well

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford will work out on Saturday prior to the team's preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Sean McVay said Thursday. McVay added that if all goes well for Stafford, the veteran will be in line to participate in practice with the Rams on Monday. McVay also confirmed an NFL Network report that Stafford is dealing with an aggravated disc in his back. "If this was in-season, he would be playing right now," McVay said of Stafford. "We have taken a very cautious approach, but if we were playing a (regular-season) game this week, he would be playing in the game -- and I think that's important for you guys (the media) to know right now. "When we do go against the Chargers, we will hold him out of that (joint) practice. And then you'll continue to see his workload increase as long as he is feeling good." Stafford, 37, remains in line to take the field for the Rams' season opener against the Houston Texans on Sept. 7 in Inglewood, Calif. He completed 340 of 517 passes (65.8 percent) for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions while starting all 16 games that he played in 2024. He also was 45 of 71 (63.4 percent) for 533 yards, four TDs and no picks in two playoff games last season. A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Stafford has completed 63.4 percent of his passes for 59,809 yards, 377 TDs and 188 interceptions in 222 regular-season games (all starts) with the Detroit Lions (2009-20) and Rams. The Lions selected him with the first overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Georgia. Stafford led the Rams to a 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved
