Underdog Brandon Bobcats win men's volleyball title for 1st time, upsetting defending champs

Yahoo24-03-2025
The Brandon University Bobcats clawed their way to the top of the U Sports food chain on Sunday evening, claiming their first-ever national title in men's volleyball.
The underdog Bobcats, ranked No. 8 going into the eight-team tournament, downed the defending champion Alberta Golden Bears three sets to one (25-20, 22-25, 28-26, 25-17).
And they did it on home court at the Healthy Living Centre, in front of a standing-room-only crowd that exploded in celebration when a Bears spike went wide on match point.
"It's indescribable," head coach Grant Wilson said following the game. "Everything you dreamed of. It's crazy."
With that, the Bobcats finished their Canada West year with an overall win-loss record of 13-12, while the No. 3-ranked Golden Bears had a sparkling 21-6.
To get there, Brandon had to first get through the quarterfinals against the No. 1 seed Winnipeg Wesmen (who close out the year with a 23-4 record) and then the No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies in the semi-final.
"Super surreal feeling," said J.J. Love, who recorded 10 blocks, 40 assists and seven digs in the gold-medal game. "We've had the program going for 20 years and we've never got close, so this is really awesome."

The Bobcats' title comes exactly one week after the University of Manitoba Bisons women's volleyball team was crowned national champs on their home court.
They defeated the Montreal Carabins 3-1 in a best-of-five final to win their eighth U Sports title, but first in 11 years.

2025 Texas State Football Predictions: Bobcats Ranked 85th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

College Football 2025 Texas State Football Predictions: Bobcats Ranked 85th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 9:44 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where Texas State lands in my Ultimate 136. Texas State ranking: 85 Last year's ranking: 55 Top player: OL Tellek Lockette: Started 17 games in two seasons at ULM and 13 games for Texas State last season; in 2023, had the fourth-highest pass block grade among all Sun Belt guards. [Texas State's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: Fresh off of a decision to leave the Sun Belt and join the Pac-12, GJ Kinne's Bobcats are looking to improve on their back-to-back eight-win seasons. They'll have three men to choose from at quarterback in Nate Yarnell (Pitt), Keldric Luster (SMU) and former four-star signal-caller Holden Geriner (Auburn). ADVERTISEMENT Though Kinne is likely to call plays as the new offensive coordinator, it wouldn't surprise me to see five-year assistant Landon Keopple get a shot at doing that with so many new pieces around after losing last year's starter at QB, three of their best receivers and three starters on the offensive line. Defensive coordinator Dexter McCoil will hope to get a double-digit sack season out of EDGE Kalil Alexander while breaking in 19 transfers on defense. [ Check out RJ Young's Ultimate 136 College Football Rankings here ] Texas State Win Total Odds: Over 7.5 (+134) Under 7.5 (-164) Have an issue with my rankings? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where Ohio lands in my Ultimate 136. Ohio ranking: 71 Last year's ranking: 117 Top player: S DJ Walker: Started every game for Ohio last season, recorded 53 total tackles, 7 tackles for loss and 7 pass breakups; named to Second Team All-MAC last season. [Ohio's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: Brian Smith follows one of the toughest acts in the sport. His predecessor, Tim Albin, won at least 10 games in Athens, Ohio, over the past three years. Albin watched Kurtis Rourke bolt to Indiana and lead the Hoosiers to their most successful season in school history, and the Bobcats still picked up 11 wins on their 2024 schedule. ADVERTISEMENT Ohio has got speed and experience in the backfield in the form of quarterback Parker Navarro and running back Sieh Bangura. They'll play behind a mostly new offensive line with just 20 starts by offensive linemen returning to the Bobcats' front five.
