Kolkata East-West Metro: Work done, KMRC starts sealing 98-ft TBM shafts

Kolkata: KMRC has started sealing the last openings to the twin East-West Metro tunnels. The 98-feet deep shafts at the Esplanade metro station were built to launch the giant tunnel borers, Chundi and Urvi, in Jan-Feb 2019.
A shaft is a vertical pathway that provides access to underground tunnels. Normally, metro shafts are closed months before the third rail (carrying electricity) is laid to prevent electrocution. Contractors ITD-ITD Cementation, which has built the last 2.6 km Esplanade-Sealdah leg of East-West Metro, took enormous risks to accommodate the drastic change in work sequence, allowing civil construction (tracks, pipelines, electric cabling, signalling work, etc) and train trials to proceed simultaneously and prevent further delay of the project.
On Thursday, TOI sneaked a peek behind the cardboard partition that hides the 30m deep shafts from the East-West Metro's Esplanade station's functional area. The work will be over by July, said officials of KMRC, the implementing agency of East-West Metro, which is now veering toward its full 16.6 km run from Sector V to Howrah Maidan. The Esplanade-Sealdah section — the missing link between Sector V-Sealdah and Esplanade-Howrah Maidan — is finally ready for revenue operations.

Ever since PM Modi inaugurated the 4.8km Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section (India's first under-river Metro), in March last year, the two shafts, one measuring 5.6mX4m to allow access to the west-bound or Howrah-bound tunnel, and another 3.1m-square opening for the eastbound or Sector V-bound tunnel, have been taking workers to the unfinished Esplanade-Sealdah section. The west-bound shaft was reduced from 10.5mX10.5m to its current size to make the subway linking East-West and North-South lines at Esplanade station more spacious.
The shaft closure involves construction of four slabs to cover each of the twin tunnels. The east-bound shaft has two are hatch covers (steel structures through which tunnels can be accessed during emergencies) and two concrete covers. The west-bound shaft will have one hatch cover and three concrete slab covers.

Donald Trump Tariffs News: Goa Minister Echoes Modi's 'India First' Stance, calls United States' move...
New Delhi: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday slapped an additional 25 per cent tariff, raising it to 50 per cent, on goods coming from India as penalty for New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil, a move that is likely to hit sectors such as textiles, marine and leather exports hard. The United States has imposed this additional tariff or penalty for Russian imports only on India while other buyers such as China and Turkey have so far escaped such measures. The 30 per cent tariff on China and 15 per cent on Turkey is lower than India's 50 per cent. Reacting to this development, a senior minister from Goa has aligned closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'India First' approach, reaffirming the government's firm commitment to protect the interests of farmers, even as the United States escalates trade pressure with a massive 50% tariff. Vishwajit Rane echoed Modi's defiant tone. India's top leadership has slammed the move as 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,' vowing to take necessary steps to safeguard national priorities. In a statement delivered in Panaji, Vishwajit Rane emphasized that farming communities, dairy workers, and fishermen remain at the heart of government policy. 'We will not compromise their welfare, regardless of external pressures,' he declared, echoing PM Modi's earlier sentiment that he's 'ready to pay a heavy price' to ensure their well‑being. India on Trump's additional tariff In a statement, the MEA pointed out that several other countries are also making such procurements to protect their own national interest and hinted its disappointment for singling it out on the issue. The US president issued the executive order hitting India with an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods citing its continuing procurement of Russian crude oil. The additional tariff, to come into effect after 21 days, will increase the duties on some Indian goods to 50 per cent. The tariffs are likely to hit sectors such as textiles, marine and leather hard. 'We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,' the MEA said. It said the US has in recent days 'targeted' India's oil imports from Russia. 'We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India,' it said. 'It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,' it added.

In hour-long call, Brazil's Prez Lula and PM Modi discuss US' 50% tariffs
NEW DELHI: Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva dialled Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday to discuss the fallout of US President Donald Trump imposing 50% tariffs on both countries, and the two leaders pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation in areas ranging from trade and energy to defence and technology. In this image via PMO, Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva after being conferred with Brazil's highest civilian award, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, during a ceremony, in Brasilia, Brazil, July 8 (PMO/ PTI FILE) US tariffs on India and Brazil jumped to 50% on Wednesday, among the highest imposed by Trump, who tied new levies on Brazil to his demand for ending the prosecution of right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro, and imposed an additional penalty on India for its purchases of Russian oil. Modi said on social media that he had a 'good conversation' with Lula, whom he met on the margins of the Brics Summit in Rio de Janeiro last month. 'We are committed to deepening our Strategic Partnership including in trade, energy, tech, defence, health and more. A strong, people-centric partnership between Global South nations benefits everyone,' he said. A readout from the Indian side said Lula initiated the phone call, and Modi recalled that the two leaders had agreed at their recent meeting on a framework to strengthen cooperation in key sectors such as trade, defence, agriculture and people-to-people ties. 'Building on these discussions, they reiterated their commitment to take the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership to new heights,' the readout said. The two leaders also discussed various regional and global issues. Lula said in a lengthy social media post that the hour-long phone conversation focused on the international economic scenario and the 'imposition of unilateral tariffs'. He added, 'Brazil and India are, so far, the two most affected countries. We reaffirmed the importance of defending multilateralism and the need to address the challenges of the current situation, as well as to explore possibilities for greater integration between the two countries.' In this context, Lula confirmed he would make a state visit to India early next year. Brazil's vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin will travel to India in October as part of preparations for the visit and to participate in a meeting of a trade monitoring mechanism. Alckmin's delegation will include Brazilian ministers and businesspeople to discuss cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical minerals, health, and digital inclusion, he said. Lula said he and Modi also discussed the goal of increasing India-Brazil trade to more than $20 billion by 2030. 'To this end, we agreed to expand the scope of the agreement between MERCOSUR and India. We exchanged information about the virtual payment platforms of our two countries, [Brazil's] PIX and India's UPI,' he said. The two sides also spoke about working together for the transition of the Brics presidency from Brazil to India, he said. On Tuesday, Lula turned down Trump's offer to call him to discuss the issue of tariffs and Brazil will resort to all possible measures to protect its interests, including approaching the WTO and taking action to strengthen foreign trade. He added, 'I will call [Chinese President] Xi Jinping, I will call Prime Minister Modi…I will call many presidents.' Lula also told Reuters on Wednesday that he saw no room for talks with Trump as he didn't wish to be humiliated. However, Brazil will not announce reciprocal tariffs and will continue official talks with the US, he said. 'The day my intuition says Trump is ready to talk, I won't hesitate to call him,' he said. 'But today my intuition says he doesn't want to talk. And I won't humiliate myself.' Like Brazil, India too hasn't announced reciprocal tariffs. However, the external affairs ministry on Wednesday described the additional 25% tariff imposed by Trump as 'unjustified and unreasonable' and said India will take 'all actions necessary to protect its national interests'.
