Head of Royal Navy investigated after 'affair with junior officer'
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has started an investigation into First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Benjamin Kelly, 59.
Sir Benjamin was reportedly expected to retire this summer, but in the meantime Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Sir Martin Connell, has taken command of the Navy in his place.
He has served in the Navy for 40 years and has been First Sea Lord since 2021.
It's been reported the investigation relates to an allegation of having an inappropriate relationship with a female officer.
While Sky News reports the woman involved was not in his immediate chain of command, as head of the Navy, Sir Benjamin is in overall charge of all personnel.
This would be a breach of the Navy's 'service test', which bans sexual relationships between commanders and their subordinates.
Sir Benjamin has focused on eliminating unacceptable behaviour during his time as First Sea Lord, declaring last year that he had 'zero tolerance for unacceptable behaviours.'
In 2022, he said: 'Those who do not wish to serve in accordance with the values and standards of life in the United Kingdom's armed forces will be removed.
'There is no place for you.'
At first, the Navy said Sir Benjamin had stepped away from his role for 'private reasons', but they have since said: 'An investigation is ongoing and it would be inappropriate to comment at this time.'
The First Sea Lord is responsible for the fighting effectiveness, efficiency and morale of the Navy.
Educated at Bromsgrove School, in Worcestershire, he joined the navy in 1984 as a University Cadet. More Trending
He qualified as both helicopter aircrew and as a Principal Warfare Officer, and as a junior officer saw service around the world in a variety of frigates and destroyers.
Sir Benjamin, who lives in Dorset, was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2016 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in 2021. He is married with three children.
The investigation has forced the Navy to postpone its annual Sea Power Conference, which was due to start on Monday and welcome military guests from around the world.

Putin's sick catalogue of kidnapped Ukrainian kids sorted by eye and hair colour
Several hundred thousand Ukrainian children are believed to have been kidnapped by Vladimir Putin's forces and they have been put in a catalogue for adoption in Russia A sick catalogue of kidnapped Ukrainian children offered up for adoption where they are listed by hair and eye colour has been issued by Russia. The online database of Ukrainian children has been put together by authorities in the Russian occupied region of Luhansk holding 294 kids and it is available at the education department. The troubling catalogue is described as being made up of 'orphans and children left without parental care'. And the description of children include their age, gender, personality as well as the colour of their hair and eyes. Some examples had kids described as 'obedient' and 'calm'. Concern about the catalogue has raised by the Save Ukraine organisation with its CEO Mykola Kuleba writing on Instagram: 'Most children in this catalogue were born in Luhansk Oblast before the Russian occupation and had citizenship." It comes after Putin warns of nuclear war after unleashing another night of hell on Ukraine. Mr Kuleba continued: "Parents of some of them were killed by occupation authorities, others were simply issued Russian identification documents to legitimize their abduction." And he added: 'The way they describe our children is indistinguishable from a slave catalogue. This is child trafficking in the 21st century, and the world must act to stop it immediately.' While Ukaine officials have identified nearly 20,000 children who have been abducted by Russia, the figure is believed to be a lot higher and could be several hundreds of thousands. Shocking accounts from intelligence experts over the past three years have detailed how the children have been taken by Putin's troops from occupied Ukrainian territories and transported across the border, including on at least on one occasion in Russian presidential aircraft. Upon arriving in Russia they are put into a network of camps and foster homes, and put through "re-education" programmes designed to strip them of Ukrainian identity. Many are then placed within Russian families. So far, less than 1,500 have been returned back home through diplomatic efforts. And Mr Kuleba wrote on X that what Russia is doing is a "war crime". He said: "Russia isn't even trying to hide it anymore. It's openly trafficking Ukrainian children. On official platforms, Ukrainian orphans are displayed like products in an online marketplace. "Full-face photos. Age. Eye colour. Health status. Even 'obedience level.' Filterable. Sortable. Selectable. This isn't care. It's state-sponsored child trafficking. Since 2014, children from occupied regions have been systematically abducted, renamed, and placed with Russian families. Now, with updated laws, Russia can even alter their surnames and birthdays. This isn't just illegal—it's a war crime." Britain has also imposed sanctions against people identified as "perpetrators of Russia's forced deportation and brainwashing of Ukrainian children". Announcing the measure in late 2024, Foreign Secretary David Lammy described the abductions as "a systematic attempt to erase Ukrainian cultural and national identity", and said Vladimir Putin 's targeting of Ukrainian children "shows the depths he will go to in his mission to erase Ukraine and its people from the map".

Russian mum stabbed after 'breasts cut off' over complaint son was killed in war

The bloodstained body of the woman with multiple stab wounds was found on a roadside as a suspect allegedly tried to move it to a hiding place, before fleeing the scene. A 52-year-old man has been arrested and detained for two months on suspicion of murder in the Arkhara district of Amur region of eastern Russia. Macabre footage showed the scene, as someone in the clip claimed "all" the woman's organs removed. A local Russian site said a fight then broke out and the man allegedly tied the woman up before the fatal attack. The woman died at the scene from her horrific injuries. The Russian Investigative Committee said: "Two days later, after waiting until it got dark outside, the suspect decided to get rid of the mutilated body of the deceased to hide traces of the crime. "He dragged the body along the street to a secluded place to hide it, but his actions were noticed by people passing by, as a result of which he abandoned the body and escaped. After some time, the suspect was detained in the village by police officers, the crime weapon was seized at his place of residence." The identities of the suspect and victim have not been revealed but the man was pictured in court on Friday. He was remanded in custody for two months pending further investigations. This comes as the world waits for a face-to-face meeting between Donald Trump and Putin in another attempt to broker a ceasefire in Ukraine. The evil dictator has been largely isolated by Western powers since the 2022 invasion but Trump has repeatedly called Putin on the phone and has sent his special envoy to Moscow. Yuri Ushakov, the Russian leader's foreign policy adviser, said: "The American side has suggested, and we have agreed in principle, to hold a high-level bilateral meeting, that is, a meeting between presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump." Ushakov confirmed the meeting it due to happen but has not confirmed where it could take place.

Ex-Reform MP Rupert Lowe mistakes charity rowers for ‘illegal migrants'
Ex-Reform member Rupert Lowe has pledged £1,000 to a fundraiser after he mistook a charity rowing team for illegal migrants. The now-independent MP for Great Yarmouth had posted a picture on social media on Thursday night showing a boat near some wind turbines off the Norfolk coast. 'Dinghies coming into Great Yarmouth, RIGHT NOW,' he wrote on X. 'Authorities alerted, and I am urgently chasing. If these are illegal migrants, I will be using every tool at my disposal to ensure these individuals are deported.' But the vessel pictured was in fact an ocean rowing boat crewed by ROW4MND, a team of four who are attempting to row from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for motor neurone disease (MND). The crew – Matthew Parker, Mike Bates, Aaron Kneebone and Liz Wardley – said they had been contacted by the Coastguard and asked if they could see a dinghy nearby, but it soon became clear the Coastguard was asking about his own boat. After satisfying the Coastguard that their boat was not carrying migrants, they continued, but several hours later were contacted again by the Coastguard because the police had 'asked if they could send a lifeboat out to check who we were'. Eventually, a friend forwarded Mr Lowe's post, which Mr Bates said provided 'a moment of light relief'. He said: 'We found it hilarious. I've not been mistaken for a migrant before. 'The best comment was the one asking where the Royal Navy were when you need them. I'm a former Royal Marine, so the Royal Navy were on the boat.' He added: 'But it was almost like a vigilante-style, people following us down the beach. 'They hadn't twigged that we were parallel to the shore for hours and not trying to land.' After realising his mistake, Mr Lowe pledged £1,000 to the team's fundraiser, but said he will not apologise for 'being vigilant'. 'Good news. False alarm!' he posted on X. 'The unknown vessel was charity rowers, thank goodness. As a well done to the crew, I'll donate £1,000 to their charity – raising money for MND. Keep going, and watch out for any real illegal migrants! 'We received a huge number of urgent complaints from constituents – I make no apologies over being vigilant for my constituents. It is a national crisis. 'No mass deportations for the charity rowers, but we definitely need it for the illegal migrants!' After the Coastguard checked their identities, the quartet set off from Land's End on July 25 and initially headed north into the Irish Sea before bad weather forced them to stop at Milford Haven in Wales. They then decided to return to Land's End and start again, this time heading in the other direction, which Mr Bates said had been 'about us showing resolve and resilience and hope'. The journey is the first of four challenges over four years, with the group aiming to row from John O'Groats to Land's End next year, from California to Hawaii in 2027 and New York to London in 2028, with a target of raising £57 million for MND research. So far, they have raised £107,515 for the charity. Mr Bates said: 'We're rowing for hope, we're rowing to find a cure, and hopefully we'll raise £57 million – we certainly will if MPs keep talking about us. Maybe Rupert will give us a donation.'
