British company Stonegate Group has announced the reopening of the Poacher pub in Portishead, North Somerset, England, following a six-figure investment in its renovation.
The refurb includes complete interior redecoration and new signage, a new darts and pool area, and an upgrade of the garden to include a stage and outside bar for live music and community events.
A new function room is now available for hire.
The pub will be managed by Danielle and Ed, who are moving from Telford, Shropshire, where they previously operated a pub with accommodation.
Danielle stated: 'The Poacher is such a beautiful and historic pub, and we can't wait to welcome both familiar faces and new customers through the doors.
'We've worked hard to create a space that celebrates the pub's heritage while making it a fantastic place for the community to come together – whether that's for live sport, music, family events or just a quiet pint in the garden.'
The renovation has generated three new jobs in the local area.
In April 2025, the Hazel Tree pub in Corby, Northamptonshire and The Leaping Salmon in Northumberland were reopened after a six-figure investments in refurbishments by the Stonegate Group.
Refurbishment at the Hazel Tree saw the introduction of a professional-standard darts area, a pool table and a revamped audio-visual system.
The Leaping Salmon revamp included improved audio-visual facilities and high-definition televisions.

Man United 'back onto the market': Ratcliffe and Qatar's latest signals on ownership

Manchester United are 'back onto the market' and the respective stances of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari royal Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani have emerged. United back onto the market Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail points out that last Wednesday, United quietly crept 'back onto the market' due to a clause that was agreed between the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe when the latter officially became co-owner in February 2024. The clause, referred to as the 'drag-along right', was put in place to ensure that minority owners do not block arrangements that the majority favour. In United's case, it means that Ratcliffe can no longer stand in the Glazers' way if they want to sell the club. This contractual provision was set to kick in 18 months after Ratcliffe completed his partial investment in United. It outlines that the Glazers can not only sell their stake in the Red Devils, but also force the INEOS billionaire to do the same. According to Keegan, Ratcliffe is fully aware that this clause is in effect but there has been nothing to suggest that the Glazers will exercise it. The drag-along right assures Ratcliffe the best price given to shareholders of his share class. A sale within three years would trigger a minimum price of $33 per share, equal to Ratcliffe's outlay 18 months ago. It's understood that Ratcliffe and the Glazers enjoy an amicable relationship. A source told the Daily Mail, 'They absolutely get on. So much so that Jim has flown over to the US on multiple occasions to have board meetings on their doorstep. They are like-minded people.' 'Ineos have come in, recognised that the business was bloated and have carried out the necessary measures to make it something approaching lean. They have also taken all the flak for that and for the first time in a long time, someone other than the Glazers has been taking the hits from the fanbase.' 'That hasn't gone unnoticed. To add to that, they have taken control of all football operations and are effectively running that side of the business, so that eases another headache. Then there's the new stadium, which Ineos is attempting to find the funding for.' 'They have attracted the big-hitters to the project, such as Lord Coe, they appear to have political backing locally and they are getting on with it.' The insider added, 'Then there's also the investment, which came as part of the deal. Sir Jim has put in $300m of his own money, which has paid for the £50m upgrade to Carrington. It has been a very long time since someone has put some money into Manchester United rather than take it out. To put it simply, if you're the Glazers, what is not to like?' Qatar and Sheikh Jassim's position on trying to buy United again With United possibly up for sale again, there are questions regarding whether Sheikh Jassim will launch another attempt to complete a full takeover of the club. Sheikh Jassim rivalled Ratcliffe during the takeover process but eventually lost out to the British businessman, whose minority bid valued United slightly higher. On whether Sheikh Jassim could throw his hat back in the ring, Keegan explains that the Qatari banker has 'zero interest' in a second bite of the apple, with his focus currently on other 'mega projects.' A source divulged to the newspaper, 'Things have changed and the project would be seen as even more difficult now for a few reasons, not least because there's a belief the standard of the Premier League has improved and it would be more difficult to turn things around.' 'There's other priorities now. The Qatar universe is doing well, they are on with different projects.' INEOS have no desire to exit United Despite the rocky start to life at Old Trafford, it's said that Ratcliffe and INEOS have no intention of leaving. They have 'zero appetite' to sell and remain fully focused on restoring United to their past glories as quickly as possible. Ratcliffe is of the opinion that the hard part is already over and it may not be long until United start to reap the benefits of the tough measures put in place. Court monitor says it doesn't support Hudson's Bay plan to sell leases to Ruby Liu

TORONTO — The court-appointed monitor overseeing Hudson's Bay's creditor protection case says it's against landlords being forced to accept a B.C. billionaire's plan to buying more than two dozen of the retailer's leases. In a new court filing made overnight, Alvarez & Marsal says it does not agree that landlords should be forced to accept Ruby Liu as a tenant even while it says it supports the sales process that ended with her chosen to buy 28 of the Bay's leases. Liu purchased three Bay leases at her own B.C. malls for $6 million, but her deal to buy the other 25 for $69.1 million has faced opposition from one of the retailer's biggest lenders and most of its landlords. They say the leases don't allow for the dining, entertainment and recreational spaces Liu has talked about opening within the department stores she will operate in the properties. They also say Liu's timelines and budgets are too unrealistic given the amount of work and repairs their properties need. Liu says she doesn't think the spaces need all of the repairs landlords are demanding because the Bay was operating in the spaces without the renovations. If they are necessary, she says her company will do them, even if they exceed her current budget. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 21, 2025. After public ask for funding, B.C.'s General Fusion lands $22M from investors

Sustainability: News about the rapidly growing climate tech sector and other areas of innovation to protect our planet. SEE MORE A component of General Fusion's energy device. (General Fusion Photo) More than three months after announcing layoffs and issuing a public letter asking for money, General Fusion today shared that it has raised $22 million and added board members. In a message titled 'A New Day for General Fusion,' General Fusion CEO Greg Twinney said the company 'has secured new funding to return to growth and continue to progress toward commercial fusion energy.' General Fusion aims to produce clean energy by generating plasma and smashing together light atoms — replicating the reactions that power the sun and stars. The pursuit has become increasingly urgent as artificial intelligence and increased electrification of the economy drives up demand for clean power. The British Columbia-based company has been chasing fusion for 23 years and recently began operating a demonstration reactor called the Lawson Machine 26. The LM26 device is located in Richmond, B.C., and is half the size of the company's planned commercial reactor. Twinney reports that the machine is generating plasmas, which are a super hot, ionized gases needed for fusion. One year ago, General Fusion shared news of $15 million in new funding. But in early May, its CEO disclosed that the effort was at 'one of the most challenging financial moments in our history.' The Globe and Mail reported at the time that a quarter of the company's workforce was let go and the company needed $125 million to continue its work. Prior to the layoffs, the business employed roughly 140 people. Including the new funding, General Fusion has raised roughly $366 million through government grants and investments. The company is backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and this spring added Bob Smith, former CEO of Bezos' Blue Origin space venture, as a strategic adviser. Bezos was not listed as an investor in this latest round, which included Segra Capital, PenderFund, Chrysalix Venture Capital, Milfam, Jimco, Gaingels, Thistledown Capital, Presight Capital and Hatch. Adam Rodman of Segra Capital and Kelly Edmison of the PenderFund are joining the board of directors. General Fusion previously set a goal of reaching 100 million degrees Celsius with LM26 by this year, and had aimed by 2026 to hit an energy-producing target of 'scientific breakeven equivalent.' That milestone is an intermediate benchmark towards commercial energy production and was first reached by the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 2022. None of the commercial efforts have accomplished this goal, though many have set and missed the milestone. General Fusion originally aimed to hit scientific breakeven in 2006. Washington state's Helion Energy has set the most ambitious target for commercialization, aiming to start producing fusion energy in 2028 at a reactor being built on the Columbia River. The Eastern Washington project — which is supposed to serve Microsoft data centers — broke ground in July. Other Pacific Northwest fusion efforts include Avalanche Energy, Zap Energy, Kyoto Fusioneering, Altrusion and ExoFusion. General Fusion said in a release issued today that it plans to deliver fusion power to the grid by the mid-2030s. 'Innovation doesn't go in a straight line; it demands resilience and collaboration,' said Twinney. 'We're grateful to all who stood with us. Together, we will energize the world.'
