Mohol said the issue came to light in an audit conducted by DGCA.
Replying to DMK MP Tiruchi Siva on a question if the government was aware of the airline's aircraft being allowed to fly with overdue emergency slide inspections, weeks before the Air India 171 crash, Mohol stated, 'During the audit of M/s Air India, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has found that inspection of emergency slide was overdue. DGCA immediately grounded the aircraft till the required rectification was carried out. DGCA has initiated enforcement action against Air India and the responsible personnel as per Enforcement Policy and Procedure Manual of DGCA.'
He, however, did not give details of the audit.
The AI 171 flight that was to operate from Ahmedabad to Gatwick, London crashed moments after take-off on June 12, after which the aviation regulator asked the airline to conduct a series of checks not only on the B787s, the make of the aircraft involved in the crash, but also on its other widebody aircraft.
Mohol said DGCA ensures compliance by airlines with all safety and maintenance standards through the mechanism of conducting spot checks and night surveillance of airlines and their personnel.
'In case of a violation, DGCA takes enforcement action in accordance with procedures prescribed in Enforcement Policy and Procedure Manual. The enforcement action consists of warning, suspension, cancellation, including imposition of financial penalty to the airlines/ personnel. DGCA officials are well trained to perform the oversight and enforcement function,' his reply read.

Senior Akasa Air official suspended for six months by DGCA
NEW DELHI: Aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has placed a senior official of Akasa Air under a six-month suspension for violation of rules during a pilot skill test. The airline had voluntarily reported the incident involving a Detailed Examiner (DE) to the regulator after conducting internal review sessions, said a source. The order issued by the DGCA, dated July 29, stated, "Suspension of DE approval of Captain Kunal Khajuria is hereby ordered for a period of 6 months, effective from the date of this order." The airline's Director of Training, Captain Sewak Singh Khosa, had informed the regulator about the breach of rules by Khajuria. "Procedural violations were found in the pilot skill assessment," a source said. 'As per the standard procedure, it was reported to the Director, who in turn brought it to the notice of the DGCA,' he added. In a statement on the incident, Akasa Air said, 'Keeping safety in mind is of utmost priority at Akasa. Each Designated Examiner and every other employee of the company upholds this standard in its highest form, at all times. The primary objective of any Designated Examiner at Akasa is to ensure that all training and assessments are professional, and meet prescribed regulatory standards without any fair of passing unsatisfactory candidates.'

DGCA Strips Akasa Air Pilot Of Designated Examiner Role Over Procedural Lapses
Last Updated: The DGCA, in its order, also "warned" the senior pilot to adhere to the regulatory compliance and regulatory standards in future India's Aviation safety regulator suspended its approval for a senior Akasa Air pilot to act as a designated examiner over procedural lapses. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also cancelled a skill test of a trainee pilot conducted by the designated examiner and ordered a retest. The regulator's action came amid heightened scrutiny of the operations of airlines in the wake of the June 12 plane crash in which 241 on board and another 19 on the ground in Ahmedabad in the deadliest aviation accident in a decade. 'Refer to e-mail dated 26.05.2025 by Director Training of Akasa Air, the case has been examined and based on the personal bearing and review of procedural deviations and findings during the check session conducted by Designated Examiner, DE approval is hereby suspended for a period of six months," the DGCA said in its July 29 order. Designated examiners are authorised to conduct various skill tests and proficiency checks for pilots to ensure that they meet the required competency level for licensing and ratings. The regulator in its order also 'warned" the senior pilot to adhere to the regulatory compliance and regulatory standards in future. Further, the trainee pilot's skill test conducted by the senior pilot is hereby declared null and void. A retest shall be conducted by a qualified Designated Examiner (DE) under the observation of a type-rated flight operations inspector, the DGCA order stated. Three May Day calls, six engine shutdowns reported so far in 2025, Centre tells RS
NEW DELHI: Three May Day calls (emergency distress calls seeking help) have been reported in 2025 so far, the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, informed the Rajya Sabha. In his written reply to a question on Tuesday, Mohol said, "During 2025, from January to July (till date), a total of 6 incidents of engine shutdown and a total of 3 incidents of May Day calls have been reported." The Minister shared data which revealed that the Ahmedabad to London Gatwick flight which crashed on June 12 had issued a May Day call. 260 lives were lost in this mishap Air India Express and Indigo reported the other May Day calls. There were six engine shutdowns involving four airlines, each in Indigo and Spicejet and one each in Alliance Air and Air India. To a query on whether the government will investigate the crash from a sabotage angle as well, Mohol said, "every aspect is being looked into for determining the probable cause(s)/contributory factor(s) leading to the accident".
