Giants' Justin Verlander's brother downplays Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani's $240M distraction

Giants' Justin Verlander's brother downplays Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani's $240M distraction originally appeared on The Sporting News The Los Angeles Dodgers haven't been playing particularly well lately, including suffering a mid-week sweep at the hands of the Angels. In fact, the Dodgers lost every game they played against the Angels this season. During the series, former Angel Shohei Ohtani found himself on the wrong side of history. 'According to Baseball Almanac's tracker of every triple play in MLB history, it marked just the eighth the Angels have ever turned. As for the Dodgers, they have now fallen victim to 24 triple plays. There had never been a triple play in the 152 games between the Dodgers and Angels since the Freeway Series began in 1997,' SI's Sam Connon wrote. Off the field, Ohtani is facing growing distractions, including an ongoing lawsuit. 'A Hawaii real estate investor and broker are suing Shohei Ohtani, claiming the Los Angeles Dodgers star and his agent got them fired from a $240 million luxury housing development on the Big Island's coveted Hapuna Coast that they brought him in to endorse,' The Associated Press's Jimmy Golen wrote. 'According to the lawsuit filed in Hawaii Circuit Court on Friday, Ohtani's agent, Nez Balelo, increasingly demanded concessions from developer Kevin J. Hayes Sr. and real estate broker Tomoko Matsumoto before demanding that their business partner, Kingsbarn Realty Capital, drop them from the deal.' While the situation is unfolding off the field, MLB analyst and Justin Verlander's brother, Ben Verlander, has attempted to downplay its significance. 'In a since-deleted tweet, Verlander dismissed the $240 million legal fight by telling fans, 'Let's all remember to not just get mad because you see his name attached to something. If his name wasn't Shohei Ohtani we wouldn't even know about this,'' Alvin Garcia wrote. 'He added, 'Never seen so many people care about CIVIL lawsuits regarding real estate.'' Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Verlander has certainly minimized the seriousness of the ongoing situation, which could escalate quickly. The Dodgers have done well to keep the matter from becoming a clubhouse distraction. However, Verlander's public comments aren't a good look. Ohtani will continue to play, but if the lawsuit doesn't go well, Verlander's dismissive remarks may come back to haunt him for a long time.

Morales, Rooker lead Athletics to 7-2 win over Angels

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Luis Morales struck out five in his second career start, Brent Rooker and Colby Thomas hit home runs, and the Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-2 on Saturday night. Morales (1-0) threw five innings and allowed one run, walking two, in his third career appearance. He has allowed two runs in 9 2/3 innings since his Aug. 1 callup. Thomas' two-run homer, his third of the year, put the A's on the board in the first inning. Darell Hernaiz drove in two on a third-inning single, and Rooker padded the A's lead with his solo homer in the fifth. Brett Harris and Rooker added insurance in the eighth with RBI singles. Sean Newcomb threw 1 2/3 innings and struck out three to earn his first save of the year. Nolan Schanuel had three hits, and Angels' starter Tyler Anderson (2-8) allowed four earned runs, three hits, and issued five walks in the loss. The A's have won 6 of their last 10 games, while the Angels have lost 6 of their last 10. Morales walked the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the first, but worked his way out of the jam with no runs scored. He only allowed one more runner to reach scoring position for the rest of his outing. The A's have scored 90 total runs in the first inning, the best in MLB and five clear of second place (Boston with 85). Angels RHP José Soriano (8-9, 3.84 ERA) faces Athletics LHP Jeffrey Springs (10-8, 4.08) in the final game of the three-game series. ___

Astros reportedly targeting pair of aces on trading block with deadline close

The Houston Astros have been busy in the last 24 hours. With Isaac Paredes out for the season, they acquired Roman Urias from the Baltimore Orioles. However, they likely are not done just yet. They are going to need some help on the pitching side. Their starting rotation has been hit hard by injuries this season. There are fortunately a few starters available with the clock ticking before the trade deadline. Mark Feinsand of reports that the Astros are showing interest in both Sandy Alcantara and Dylan Cease. "Cease is definitely up there. Sandy Alcantara is certainly up there. The Astros are in on both." Feinsand said on MLB Network. "I was told yesterday that Cease was the Astros main target. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Feinsand notes that the issue with Cease being Houston's top target is that San Diego Padres General Manager A.J. Preller is fielding a lot of calls for the right-hander. Still, adding one of the two starters listed could pay huge dividends for the Astros. Houston is 62-47 and holds a five-game lead in the American League West over the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners. The Astros also have the third-best record in the Junior Circuit, and they seem to be pointed towards the postseason. Alcantara would make sense as a pitcher with a few years of control. Framber Valdez is a free agent at season's end and likely will not be back in 2026. But either way, Houston needs a rotation arm or two. We'll see what the Astros are able to do with the deadline looming. More MLB:
