Umno sets up legal team to sue over defamation, vows to act against social media slander targeting leaders

Malay Mail6 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Umno will take firm legal action, including filing lawsuits, against individuals who spread slander or tarnish the reputation of its leaders.
Its secretary-general, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, said this move aligns with the establishment of a Legal Secretariat at the Umno headquarters, which is tasked with monitoring and addressing defamatory content involving the party and its leadership.
"Umno has not traditionally resorted to lawsuits or legal notices, but given the rampant misuse of social media to attack our leaders, it is time for the party to respond more assertively,' he said after officiating the Bukit Bintang Umno division delegates meeting today.
Asyraf Wajdi added that other political parties have long used legal channels to counter false allegations and negative perceptions, and Umno will now adopt a similar strategy to hold irresponsible individuals accountable.
In a related development, he said Umno has agreed to establish an Outstation Voters Department as a strategic initiative to engage with voters who reside outside their home constituencies, particularly in the run-up to the next general election.
Nearly 40 per cent of voters in certain parliamentary constituencies, he noted, are based in areas such as the Klang Valley and Selangor.
"At the recent Supreme Council meeting, we approved a proposal from the Bukit Bintang division to form this department. It will allow us to conduct targeted programmes and provide continuous support to these voters in constituencies that Umno and Barisan Nasional aim to win,' he said. — Bernama

Umno leaders must explain unity govt role to members says Khaled

KUALA TERENGGANU: Umno delegates and branch leaders must continue engaging with grassroots members to explain the party's participation in the Unity Government formed after the 15th General Election (GE15), said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. He said that while the collaboration is gradually gaining acceptance, some members at the grassroots level remain confused or disillusioned. 'Since Barisan Nasional's (BN) defeat in the 2018 general election, no single party has dominated the national political landscape. Umno, too, has contested only as part of a coalition,' he said when officiating the Kuala Terengganu Umno Division Delegates' Meeting today. Also present were Terengganu Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Rozi Mamat and division chief Datuk Mohd Sabri Alwi. Mohamed Khaled, who is also Defence Minister, stressed that Umno remains committed to its founding principles, particularly the defence of Malay rights and privileges. He said the party had set clear conditions before joining the Unity Government, including recognition of Malay leadership. 'Our strategy may have shifted, but our values and principles remain unchanged even in cooperation with DAP. 'There's no need for doubt. Umno's ideology is rooted in the party's constitution. Any claims suggesting otherwise are mere attempts to weaken the party,' he added. - Bernama

Fadhlina: Education Ministry refers school liquor auction probe to police, vows zero tolerance for misconduct

KUALA TERENGGANU, July 12 — The Ministry of Education (MOE) is leaving it to the authorities to investigate the recent incident involving a liquor auction within a school compound that went viral recently. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry will not compromise on any form of misconduct or violation of regulations involving educational institutions. 'We have handed the matter over to the relevant authorities for investigation. We will not tolerate any misconduct or breaches of the rules. Action will be taken,' she told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 in Terengganu today. She said investigations are ongoing, including into reports of a scuffle during the auction, and the Ministry will continue to monitor the case to ensure regulations are upheld and appropriate action is taken. The incident sparked public outrage after a primary school facility in Pontian, Johor, was used to host a liquor auction, during which a fight was also reported to have occurred. — Bernama
