According to BMRCL, a total of about 10.5 lakh passengers travelled across 96kms of Purple, Green, and Yellow lines Monday.
On its first day of service, the 19-km Yellow Line between RV Road and Bommasandra recorded over 83,000 passengers. BMRCL initially estimated, given three train sets, only 25,000 to 30,000 people would use the line, but opening day saw more than three times that number.
BMRCL clocked 40-plus round trips. Six coach train has capacity to carry close to 2,000 passengers.
On Monday, apart from daily commuters, many also took joy rides to experience the service. Shreyas R, a passenger, said, "The Yellow Line receiving such a good response is a testimony to its huge potential to ferry lakhs of passengers every day. Now, BMRCL should focus on running more trains. Ridership is likely to grow in the days to come."
Another passenger said, "People have been waiting for a long time to use this line. Despite having to wait for 25 to 30 minutes, they still prefer to travel by Metro."
A BMRCL official said, "Usually, when new lines open, a good number of people come for joy rides. It will take a couple of weeks for operations to stabilise, and then we will get an idea of the actual number of regular users." BMRCL is expected to receive a fourth train set this week, which will be made operational by the end of Aug.
The frequency of services is likely to be increased to 20 minutes then.

Namma Metro sets new ‘single-day' record with 10.48 lakh riders: CM
Bengaluru, Aug 13 (PTI) Karnataka Chief Minister on Wednesday announced that Namma Metro set a new 'single day' record with 10.48 lakh people travelling on the network a day after the Yellow Line was launched. The record was set on August 11, said Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a joint venture floated by the Government of India and the Karnataka government, to build, operate and expand the Namma Metro network. Sources from BMRCL said the agency had only expected a turnout of 25,000 to 30,000 people as there are only three train sets. But the opening day saw three times more people using the Yellow Line. 'With 4,51,816 people travelling on the Purple Line, 2,91,677 on the Green Line, 52,215 on the Yellow Line and 2,52,323 on the Interchange, Namma Metro has now become the lifeline of transportation for Bengaluru residents," wrote the CM in microblogging site X, formerly Twitter. He said the Yellow Line has reduced travel time and made software employees who commute to places like Electronic City, Silk Board, Singasandra, Govindashetty Palya and Konappana Agrahara, breathe a sigh of relief. 'I request the public to support our efforts to alleviate traffic congestion by making more use of mass transit such as the metro," he added.
